Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 7-30-2018

Pittsburgh Press, July 30, 1918:

After arriving at his summer home, whither he went before the war secretary had announced his final decision with regard to the future of baseball, President John K. Tener, of the National league, announced that he did not believe any world’s series would be played.

At the same time, the magnates were already beginning to plan for the annual classic, and there is at present every reason to believe that the series will go through.

It begins to look as if the ...

OTP 2018 July 30: Now Running for Office, Adam Greenberg. You May Remember His First At-Bat.

Greenberg dug in for the first pitch, slightly bending his knees. It was a 92-mile-an-hour fastball.

“You get three-tenths of a second,” Greenberg said. “The first tenth I’m thinking don’t bail because if it’s a curve I look stupid, and it’s strike one. The second tenth I realized the ball wasn’t breaking. By the third tenth, my only thought was to get out of the way, and the only thing I could do was to turn into the catcher.”

Was the Baseball Hall of Fame Sending a Message with Babe Ruth’s Plaque?

The inscription on Jack Morris’ plaque is four times as long as that of Babe Ruth. But really, that’s not the worst of it: Bud Selig’s testament is longer than Jackie Robinson’s. And that seems… not great.

Royals’ Salvador Perez turned an extremely rare unassisted double play by a catcher

New York had loaded the bases with no outs in the second inning when the Yankees’ Tyler Wade hit a tapper about 2 feet in front of the plate.

Royals catcher Salvador Perez sprang to his feet, touched home plate for the force and then tagged Wade for the second out.

It was over in a flash and Wade seemed a bit stunned because the double play happened while he was in the batter’s box.

As Companies Lose Tax Deduction for Tickets, Baseball May Pay the Price

One point not mentioned in the article: Much involving the rush for new facilities (in baseball and other sports) in the last few decades has involved trying to increase luxury boxes, and to otherwise appeal to this corporate audience. If they stop buying tickets, does the demand for new facilities decline?

Also as a side-note: I’ve used the print version of the headline rather than the online one- felt it was a lot clearer, and it didn’t violate Betteridge’s Law.

Tyler Graffeo, the president ...

First, the Yankees Played the Indians. Then World War ll Took the Field.

Rather interesting story here, especially for those with an interest in the sort of special exhibition games we don’t seem to have anymore.

During World War II, baseball not only survived, it thrived. Games were turned into dazzling patriotic shows, and an extravaganza like the all-star game featuring the greats of the Yankees, Giants and Dodgers at Polo Grounds on Aug. 26, 1943, raised $800 million in war bonds.

But another war-relief game that summer, which raised far less money, left an ...

Designated for Assignment ... Permanently

Earlier this month, Chase Utley, the longtime Philadelphia Phillies star and current Los Angeles Dodger, announced that he is playing his last season. One of the best second baseman of his era, he has, at 39, been relegated to a role player, frequently coming off the bench in tough situations.

The A’s keep racking up victories. Here are 10 reasons why this team is for real

So, how many of these claims are we likely to concur with?

ARLINGTON, Texas — This is no longer just a mirage. It’s not just a hot streak. They’re not just getting lucky. These A’s are for real.

Now at 60-43 after Khris Davis continued to terrorize the Rangers in yet another comeback victory Wednesday night, the A’s would qualify for the best record in the National League right now.

They reside in the much tougher American League, still third place in their own division, but the ...

The Phillies tied a homer record that hasn’t been seen in 15 years

After years of bad baseball and general futility, the Philadelphia Phillies are on the rise. They have the youngest team in the majors, excellent starting pitching, and a lineup full of power threats. On Thursday night in Cincinnati, the Phillies delivered on those power threats with a historic outburst of home runs that gave the Phillies the win, and their biggest National League East lead of the season.

The hot and humid Cincinnati weather was perfect for hitting home runs. Rhys Hoskins got ...

Report: Mariners won’t sign Safeco Field lease unless they get $180 million in taxpayer funds

An understatement, to put it mildly:

In May, the Seattle Mariners proudly announced that they had agreed to terms on a new 25-year lease that would have kept them in Safeco Field through the 2049 season. The team had an ambition vision for the stadium’s place in Seattle.

“We want this ballpark to be our home for the next 100 years. Safeco Field should be to Seattle and to the Mariners what Wrigley Field is to Chicago and the Cubs and Fenway Park is to Boston and the Red Sox,” Mariners ...

Aaron Judge has fractured right wrist, can’t swing bat for 3 weeks

NEW YORK—New York Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge suffered a chip fracture in his right wrist after being hit by a pitch in the first inning of Thursday night’s 7-2 win over the Kansas City Royals and is expected to miss three weeks, the Yankees announced.

The Yankees said Judge isn’t expected to need surgery, but it will be about three weeks before he can swing a bat in a game. He was placed on the 10-day disabled list on Friday and the team recalled infielder Tyler Wade from Triple-A ...

How Twitter Has Become Locker Room Poison

Jason Witten’s Social Media Commandments

1. Don’t read your mentions good or bad—the feedback that matters is from your coach and those you respect.
2. Don’t reply to a negative; keep your eye above the spectator line.
3. Negative social media is often not indicative of the real world.
4. Use social media as a way to stay informed and connect.
5. Don’t post anything that wouldn’t make your family proud.

The Nationals must think about the unthinkable: Trading Bryce Harper

So, then, for the first time in seven summers, we face the serious question: With the nonwaiver trade deadline coming up Tuesday, should the Nationals sell?

You can’t ask that inevitable question before the next one roars up like a freight train: Should they try to trade — gulp — Bryce Harper?

It was still unclear at this point ...

With a Loud Ovation, Baseball Shows Its Whiteness

Let’s pose a counterfactual: Josh Hader is black, and an excavation of his Twitter account reveals that he called whites “crackers,” wrote of his hatred for them and endorsed an organization that engaged in genocidal violence against whites. One of his tweets included a picture of a clenched black fist. That black pitcher had also expressed hatred for gays and made graphic, misogynist statements.

I’m trying to imagine thousands of white fans rising to their feet and giving him a ...

J.D. Martinez’s Defense? What The Numbers Really Say

The graphics are goofy; the videos are useful; the conversation is fantastic. A moderate-depth piece from Alex Speier on why some advanced defensive metrics aren’t advanced enough.

“Statcast data has changed the way that internally teams are doing defensive evaluations,” Stern told Martinez. “But to the best of my knowledge, I don’t think very much of that is public, so it hasn’t really changed any of the public-facing numbers that people have access to.”

Martinez had heard similar ...

The Rays Played a Pitcher at Third Base

I’m fascinated by the creative player usage this year.

Venters left the game, and Romo returned to the mound. Adeiny Hechavarria came in to play shortstop. Romo survived his adventure, and he became just the ninth pitcher in recorded baseball history to both pitch and play third base in the same game. Or should I say eighth pitcher — Dick Selma did it twice in April 1970. But this hadn’t happened in the majors since August 6, 1971, when Bill Wilson temporarily played third so that Joe ...
