Muchas Gracias, Béisbol (Carlos Beltran announces retirement)

“Thank you.”

This is and always will be my response when someone thanks me for what I’ve done in this game. Because I am so eternally grateful.

I am blessed to have played this game for 20 years.

I am blessed to have played for so many great organizations.

I am blessed to have shared all of my experiences with my wife and my three kids, my family and friends. To have so many loving fans. To have been able to build a school in Puerto Rico and change the lives of so many kids. To have ...

Fanrag: Alex Cobb Destinations

Gotsulias can tie him to three clubs.

Plenty of teams need a solid starter but won’t break the bank — Cobb fits the bill. He’s also younger than some of the other more expensive free agents such as Yu Darvish and Jake Arietta, which makes him an attractive target. MLB Trade Rumors sees Cobb getting a four-year deal worth $48M.

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 11-13-2017

Harrisburg Telegraph, November 13, 1917:

Dan Shay, former manager of the Milwaukee American Association Baseball Club, charged with the murder of a negro waiter [in Indianapolis] May 3, will rely on a plea of self-defense, it was said yesterday, when his trial started. When court adjourned at noon not a juror had been accepted finally by either side.

According to testimony given at the Coroner’s inquest, Shay and a young woman entered a local cafe late at night. It was deserted except for the ...

Alex Anthopoulos to be next GM of Atlanta Braves, report says

Anthopoulos was the general manager for the Toronto Blue Jays between 2009 and 2015. He is credited for leading the team to the 2015 World Series playoffs and its first 90-win season since 1993.

For the last two years, the 40-year-old Montrealer has been working as the vice-president of baseball operations for the Los Angeles Dodgers, where he landed after refusing to continue with the Jays in 2015.

OTP 13 November 2017: Politics, race now touching every sport

Like legions of Giants fans who hate the Los Angeles Dodgers, Le rooted for the Houston Astros to beat them in the World Series. But he changed his mind, swallowed hard and began cheering for the Dodgers after Yuri Gurriel, a Cuban-born Astro, hit a home run against Japanese pitcher Yu Darvish then was caught on camera pulling the corners of his eyes with his fingers in a racist gesture.

“I couldn’t really be OK with them winning any longer,” Le said of the Astros.

With Gurriel’s ...

Mets pitchers Syndergaard de Grom | Newsday

One way to stop the insanity of really long games and help offense would be to limit teams to 11 pitchers on the roster.

The Mets intend to rethink the way they use a pitching staff that disintegrated during a 92-loss season, sources have told Newsday. It’s a philosophical shift that will shape their decisions as general manager Sandy Alderson begins a critical offseason reboot.

With the exception of Noah Syndergaard and Jacob deGrom, Mets starters may be shielded from facing lineups more ...

Hall for Halladay – Dizzy Deane

The reports invariably mention the highlights of Halladay’s career: a Cy Young Award in each league, a perfect game on May 29, 2010, and a divisional series no-hitter on October 6 of that same year.  Nice résumé items, people agree, but they are not so unanimous when it comes to the Hall of Fame.  Many seem to think Doc is a borderline candidate at best; after all, he won “just” 203 games with a modest 3.38 career ERA.

Borderline?  With the possible exception of Clayton Kershaw, Roy ...

Fansided: Two Teams Take Lead in Stanton Stakes

The Giancarlo Stanton trade rumors are heating up, with two front-runners emerging from the mix. Now, you would think it would be the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, Los Angeles Angels, or even the “all-in” Washington Nationals.

One team from the West coast and the other from the Midwest could be the heavy favorites to land the highly sought after slugger.

Not to be arch about it, as the answers are large as life in the tags.

Detroit News: Gardenhire’s Unenviable Situation

Chance will play a big role for as long as the roots are not severed, all is well.

So where does that leave manager Ron Gardenhire and his newly-assembled staff? Is he going to play the role of former Astros manager Bo Porter? The guy who takes all the requisite lumps and losses, and then gets brushed aside when the club is ready to compete?

Guaranteed that is not how he views it. He said as much at his introductory press conference.

HOF committee: Whitaker’s case discussed, fell short this time

“There was no decision not to include Lou Whitaker,” said Jack O’Connell, a longtime Hartford (Conn.) Courant writer and longtime secretary/treasurer of the Baseball Writers Association of America.

“His career was discussed along with many others, but he did not get sufficient support to make the ballot. There were quite a few other players from that era who might have been worthy of inclusion, but we were limited to 10. This does not mean Whitaker or anyone else who did not make the ballot ...

Urged by his father to become a grocer, Huggins studied law, but while in school became so engrossed in baseball that he adopted it as a profession.

SF Chronicle: A’s Interest in Yelich, Ozuna

One item on Oakland’s wish list this winter is an outfielder with several years of team control remaining, sources told The Chronicle on Wednesday. And with Miami’s new ownership looking to shed payroll, the A’s have interest in Marcell Ozuna and, though their preference is for a right-handed hitter, possibly Christian Yelich.

Oakland will have money to spend after trading many of its higher-priced players in July. Plus, Billy Butler’s contract is now off the books. Though the A’s ...

Arizona Diamondbacks expected to pursue J.D. Martinez, agent Scott Boras says

As for the why the Diamondbacks might not be involved, it likely will come down to money. They enter the offseason with a roster projected to earn around $115 million when factoring in guaranteed contracts, arbitration raises and minimum salaried players. Trades and/or non-tenders could free up cash, but it likely would take a big increase in spending or a major trade or two for the club to afford what Martinez seems likely to command on the open market.

What about the umpires? Aren’t they learning as well? Might some of the *tricks* of being a good pitch framer not fooling the umpires as much? It would be interesting to see whether umpires are more consistently calling the strike zone and whether that consistency has improved over this timeline.

Rowland’s Office: Braves Looking at Retreads for GM

Apparently not very brave thinking in Atlanta.

At a time when the game is skewing young, the Braves remain stuck in the past. The fact that Jim Hendry is a candidate for GM or president of baseball ops or whatever says it all. The other five retreads vying for the job don’t inspire much confidence, either, with one possible exception.

SI: How Are Teams Compensated for Losing a Free Agent?

MLB introduced the qualifying offer back in 2012 to replace its old free-agent compensation system in which teams were gifted draft picks based on a calculus that divided players into two pools, Type A (the top 20% available) and Type B (the top 21–40%). But in the latest CBA, the qualifying offer was overhauled. Before, signing teams would have to forfeit their highest draft pick (unless they were in the top 10 of the draft) to the player’s old club. Now, things are a little more ...

Offseason Outlook: Chicago Cubs - MLB Trade Rumors

I can’t see Otani fitting into a NL club. If his goal is to remain a two-way player, it will be much easier for an AL team to get him ABs.

The ideal candidate for the Cubs’ rotation, of course, is 23-year-old righty Shohei Otani.  If MLB, the players’ union, Nippon Professional Baseball, and the Nippon Ham Fighters are able to reach an agreement, Otani may make the leap to MLB despite being subject to international bonus pool restrictions.  While Cubs fans are surely dreaming of Otani ...

This.

“Not everybody has to take pitches. I get it, working the count. Is it worth it to work the count? Guys are throwing 98-99, you hunt for a pitch to do damage with, that’s going to help us out.”
