Texas Rangers Hall of Fame pitcher John Wetteland arrested on child sex abuse charge

Texas Rangers Hall of Fame pitcher John Wetteland was arrested Monday on a child sex abuse charge.

Wetteland, 52, is accused of continuous sexual abuse of a child under the age of 14, according to Denton County jail records. The Trophy Club resident posted $25,000 bond and was released from custody the same day as his arrest.

A long-time born-again Christian, he has coached baseball and taught Bible studies at Liberty Christian School in Argyle after retiring from baseball, but apparently ...

Cleveland Indians have talked to Padres, Reds about 3-team trade involving Corey Kluber | cleveland.com

Senzel to the Padres, Padres OF to Cleveland, and Kluber to the Reds. I can see the Reds also putting in an outfielder to get this to work. To get Kluber, the Reds are going to have to pony up.

MLB Trade Rumors: Phillies Frontrunners To Sign Bryce Harper

With a little more than a month before pitchers and catchers report to spring training, the two biggest free agents of this offseason still have yet to sign deals.

The Phillies and White Sox are the Manny Machado frontrunners, while Harper met with the Phillies brass in his hometown of Las Vegas this weekend, and could command a contract worth $300 million.

There are still plenty of quality free agents to be signed, but the freeze on the Hot Stove probably won’t thaw until Harper and Machado ...

Two Mets ranked on MLB Network’s Top 10 Second Basemen list

In one offseason, the Mets went from having none of the Top 10 second basemen in baseball to having two of them—at least according to MLB Network’s Top 10 Second Basemen Right Now! show.

But the order might surprise you.

Jed Lowrie, who the Mets signed to a two-year deal last week, comes in at No. 2 on the list, behind Jose Altuve of the Astros. Robinson Cano, who the Mets acquired along with Edwin Diaz from the Mariners in December, checks in at No. 4.

And, with the Mets being what they ...

A fellow Yale graduate has joined Cubs president and Yale product Theo Epstein in the team’s front office.

Monday, the Cubs announced that they have named former MLB pitcher Craig Breslow as Director of Strategic Initiatives for Baseball Operations. Breslow, 38, is a 2002 Yale graduate with a molecular biophysics and biochemistry degree.

In his role with the Cubs, Breslow will “help to evaluate and implement data-based processes throughout all facets of Baseball Operations. He will also ...

Source: White Sox offer to Manny Machado ‘was for less than 8 years’

Despite reports that the White Sox have made an eight-year offer to Manny Machado, their offer to the free agent infielder “was for less than 8 years and less money than has been reported,” a source has told NBC Sports Chicago.

The financial details of that offer are not completely known, but I’m told the White Sox have not changed their stance on either money or terms since making their initial offer, thought to be around $200 million.

Although it has often been projected that Machado ...

Barry Bonds’ former agent says MLB owners are colluding against players to suppress salaries

Major League Baseball’s owners are colluding against the sport’s players, long-time agent Jeff Borris charged when he joined The Jonah Keri Podcast.

“When you look at the revenues coming into the game ... it broke an all-time record and over $10 billion, the cost of labor should hand-in-hand go up as well,” said Borris, who’s represented the likes of Barry Bonds, Mike Piazza, and Rickey Henderson, and currently serves as general council for Ballengee Group.

“When that doesn’t happen, I think ...

Rod Allen: Incident with Mario Impemba more like a baseball brawl

Former Fox Sports Detroit analyst and Detroit Tigers announcer Rod Allen spoke with Free Press business columnist Carol Cain on the “Michigan Matters” program on Sunday morning on WWJ-TV (Channel 62).

In Allen’s first public comments about the Sept. 4 incident with play-by-play broadcaster Mario Impemba, which turned physical and effectively ended the duo’s 16-plus year run calling Tigers games, he said the situation was largely blown out of proportion in media reports.

Allen said he ...

Mel Stottlemyre, New York baseball icon, dies at 77

Mel Stottlemyre, whose work as both a Major League pitcher and pitching coach made him one of the most respected men in the game, died Sunday in Seattle after a lengthy battle with bone marrow cancer. He was 77.

Stottlemyre was a five-time All-Star, winning 20 games on three separate occasions during an 11-year career. Stottlemyre pitched his entire career (1964-74) with the Yankees, appearing in only one World Series—the seven-game 1964 Fall Classic won by the Cardinals, only two months after ...

Baseball Doesn’t Need Collusion To Turn Off The Hot Stove

So while outright collusion among owners is certainly possible, it isn’t necessary to explain what’s going on. It’s far more likely that what we’re seeing in recent winters is simply the hard cold math resulting from a mismatch between how much money each team is raking in overall and how much of that revenue each individual player can lay claim to being responsible for.

“A lot of us in academia wrote about that and actually told the players’ association that that was going to be ...

MLB free agency: Swellopt is the latest victory for mlb owners | SI.com

Arrieta signed a three-year, $75 million contract before the 2018 season, with the Phillies retaining the option, after 2019, to add 2020 and 2021 to the deal. Kikuchi signed a four-year, $56 million deal earlier this month that allows the Mariners, after 2021, to tack on 2023, 2024, and 2025 for an extra $53 million total.

Scott Boras, the agent who negotiated all three deals, calls it a “swellopt.” He unpacked the etymology for Ken Rosenthal: “For the club, if the player performs well, the ...

Tangotiger Blog: Nola, Pivetta, Phillies, and pitcher-specific UZR

And, as expected Pivetta was hurt by the Phillies fielders more than any other Phillies pitcher.  Indeed, more than any other pitcher in the league!  The Phillies fielders gave up 24 more hits with Pivetta on the mound.

So, adding it all up:

  • Nola allowed 27 fewer hits than the average Phillies pitcher, and that still holds.
  •
  • Pivetta’s 11 MORE hits when he’s on the mound drops down by 24, so that he really should count as 13 FEWER hits than the average Phillies pitcher.

And ...

Bryce Harper, Manny Machado mystery teams

This.

1. Giants
Things have been entirely too quiet around the Giants. Some of it is new president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi putting together a front office staff and assessing his needs. Since he has not traded away Madison Bumgarner, his most valuable asset, that could be a tipoff that the Giants aren’t diving into any kind of rebuild. What they need more than anything is an impact offensive player or two, preferably an outfielder. Signing Harper would insert the Giants back into the ...

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 1-14-2019

Washington Times, January 14, 1919:

Lieut. Lloyd Waite, formerly a Pirate, now an officer in France, says that the German troops know a lot more about baseball than generally is supposed. On several occasions, when American soldiers were playing games in dangerously exposed positions, Germans within good firing distance not only let them alone, but stood up in their trenches and hooted derisively when anybody made a fielding error, struck out, or boneheaded on a play.

It’s pretty unnerving when ...

Social media helps Hal Steinbrenner on decision-making for Yankees

How many big contracts can the Yankees absorb? I see analysts suggesting that it’s outrageous if the Yankees don’t sign Manny. It’s not though. Big contracts can’t be signed without considering your future salary commitments. The checks also can’t be written without factoring in the economic limits of the current CBA (Luxury Tex, etc.), which were **collectively bargained**. You also can’t ignore the players you already have on your 40-Man and in your pipeline.(Your players impact Machado’s ...

The CheckSwings 2019 Mock Expansion Draft

The most recent Expansion Draft was before I started following baseball. I enjoyed this thought experiment quite a bit, as they take it seriously, follow the official MLB rules (for protected players and such), and therefore create a pretty realistic idea as to what type of teams we might expect the next two Expansion Teams to field.

As we went through the exercise of creating protected lists for each existing club, we realized that we needed to bring in as much outside help as possible in ...

Padres’ Wil Myers moving from 3B back to the outfield

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Wil Myers said Saturday he’s moving back to the rebuilding Padres’ crowded outfield, indicating that San Diego likely is still in the market for a third baseman.

Myers said the decision to switch positions yet again was made during a recent discussion with general manager A.J. Preller and manager Andy Green.

“It was more of a group decision,” Myers said at FanFest. “I did tell them I want to do what’s best for the team going forward. Obviously, I want to win and ...

Did J.D. Martinez contract the Drake curse? Red Sox can prove otherwise

Did J.D. Martinez derail the Boston Red Sox’s 2019 season before it even began?

The Red Sox slugger posted an Instagram photo Saturday of himself hanging with rap superstar Drake in Las Vegas.

That would appear to be harmless—until you remember the Drake Curse.

Unfortunately, I’m neither Irish enough nor curly enough in the hair to make a living rambling about this curse in the popular press- anyone here want to give it a go?

Phillies’ Jake Arrieta warns players coming up on new contracts: ‘You’re next’

Jake Arrieta wants players coming up on arbitration and free agency to be aware of what they’re getting into.

MLB has seen a significant decrease in free-agent contracts over the last two seasons, despite record revenue in 2018.

Madison Bumgarner to Brewers Blockbuster Would Create Cubs’ Worst 2019 Nightmare

The Milwaukee Brewers aren’t out to knock the Chicago Cubs from the National League Central throne. They already did that in 2018. Their goal for 2019 is to keep the status quo.

This explains their interest in Madison Bumgarner. According to Jon Morosi of MLB.com, the San Francisco Giants have had “substantive communication” about the ace left-hander with the Brewers, who represent his “most likely destination” in a trade.

It’s not guaranteed that the Giants will indeed move Bumgarner. There ...
