Taking Back the Ballparks - Chicago White Sox

The latest ballpark to undergo a name change, dumping the harmless U.S. Cellular (which did provide a pretty good nickname, the Cell) to the ridiculous Guaranteed Rate Field, complete with its downward trending arrow. G-Rate Field, as absolutely nobody calls it, is the closest thing to a home park in MLB I have now, though I’d actually tab the U.S. Steel Yard in Gary as my true local diamond.

Whatever you call this field, it’s one of the odd ducks of major league stadia. It’s of similar ...

2018 Manager of the Year winners | MLB.com

The established formula for winning the Baseball Writers’ Association of America’s Manager of the Year Award is a regular-season result that greatly exceeds preseason expectation. Brian Snitker and Bob Melvin fit that formula perfectly in 2018, which made the announcement Tuesday night that they were selected as their respective leagues’ top skippers relatively unsurprising.

NYPost: Why Mets may be in hurry to reach David Wright settlement

With the help of Major League Baseball, the Mets are working with their insurance company to try to come to a settlement on the $27 million they still owe the medically unable-to-play David Wright, an industry source said.
***
Because Wright played in the Mets’ next-to-last game of the season as a farewell (after a final comeback from his spinal stenosis fell short), the Mets would have to pay him fully for the first 59 games of next season, as per the terms of their policy. Starting in the ...

Dodgers pitcher Hyun-jin Ryu is only MLB player to accept $17.9M qualifying offer for 2019

Hyun-jin Ryu won’t be hitting the open market this offseason. The left-handed pitcher has accepted a qualifying offer from the Los Angeles Dodgers, meaning they’ll pay him $17.9 million to forego free agency for another year and stay in L.A. But he’s one-of-a-kind this offseason.

The deadline for free-agents-to-be to accept qualifying offers from their former teams was 5 p.m. ET Monday and Ryu was the only player to accept the $17.9 million deal, according to an announcement from the MLB ...

Ronald Acuna wins NL Rookie of the Year

Braves’ star outfielder Ronald Acuna has been named the 2018 National League rookie of the year, the league announced Monday.

He topped fellow outfielder Juan Soto of the Nationals 114-89. Acuna garnered 27 first-place votes while Soto had two. Dodgers pitcher Walker Buehler was the third finalist.

The Braves can now claim eight rookie of the year winners. Acuna is the first since reliever Craig Kimbrel in 2011. Rafael Furcal (2000) and David Justice (1990) were other semi-recent Braves to ...

Angels’ Shohei Ohtani Wins AL Rookie Of The Year Award

Shohei Ohtani didn’t show anything during spring training. And when he finally got it going for the Los Angeles Angels during the regular-season, the two-way sensation short-circuited, suffering a Grade 3 tear of the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow.

Despite it all, Ohtani became the first player since Babe Ruth in 1919 to pitch at least 50 innings and hit 15 home runs in the same season.

For that alone, Ohtani was the well-deserved runaway winner of the Rookie of the Year Award ...

Germany went into last place in the world league on Monday.

There are magnates in the American Association who can be expected to urge the candidacy of General Foch for the league presidency in place of Tom Hickey.

It might not be a bad idea to suggest Hank Gowdy as the first president of the German republic.

OTP 2018 Nov 12 - Why Voting Is Like Baseball (Hint: Both Matter)

Yes, political elections are never decided by one vote. But aspiring politicians look at the results of voting returns. If somebody is elected by a gazillion votes, politicians pay attention to this. Same thing if somebody loses but does better than expected.

Just as baseball teams copy what other teams have done successfully, politicians copy what other politicians have done.

Aaron Gleeman once said the difference between a 75-win team and an 80-win team is huge for free agents, and he was ...

MLB owners expected to unanimously approve extension for Rob Manfred next week, report says

MLB owners are soon expected to vote on a new five-year term for commissioner of baseball Rob Manfred, reports USA Today’s Bob Nightengale.

To get a contract extension, Manfred will need “yes” votes from a simple majority of team owners (i.e., at least 16 of 30). However, Nightengale reports that Manfred is expected to receive unanimous support among owners when they meet in Atlanta next week.

Manfred, 60, has served in the role since January of 2015, when he succeeded Bud Selig and became ...

Dodgers release Utley to facilitate retirement

And the retirees just keep on coming….

Chase Utley was given his unconditional release by the Dodgers on Friday so the veteran second baseman can officially retire. Utley announced in July that 2018 would be his final season.

“The thing I’m having the most difficult time with is being a part-time dad,” Utley said at a press conference to make the announcement. “So that’s really the reason I’m shutting it down. I’m ready to be a full-time dad.”

Utley played 16 seasons in the Majors. He played ...

It’s not just the worst teams not spending money in baseball free agency — it’s the richest, too

CARLSBAD, Calif. – During the great panic of 2017-18, when jobless players were jumping on conference calls and asking one another what the hell happened to free agency, the Major League Baseball Players Association tried to allay fears by pointing toward the future. It wasn’t particularly satisfactory for those lacking employment, but the 2018-19 offseason, players were told, shouldn’t be like this.

The New York Yankees, the game’s financial behemoth, would dip below the $197 million ...

Report: Nationals Ownership Rejected Bryce Harper Trade to Astros

The Houston Astros reportedly had a deal in place for the Nationals’ Bryce Harper at the non-waiver deadline in July but Washington ownership nixed the deal, per Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.

The Nationals would have received right-hander J.B. Bukauskas, the Astros’ No. 8 prospect according to MLB.com, and two other minor leaguers, in exchange for Harper. Catcher Garrett Stubbs, the team’s No. 15 prospect, was also reportedly in play, along with another, low-level, minor-league pitcher ...

MLB faces offseason challenges

(Reuters) - Major League Baseball heads into the offseason with no shortage of issues to address, most pressingly the drop in stadium attendance and TV ratings, a trend toward longer games and a dearth of star power in its ranks.

Easy answers, however, may prove hard to come by.

Average attendance for regular season games in 2018 fell four percent from the previous year to 28,830 per game, according to MLB, while the total number of fans who showed up at the ballpark fell below 70 million for ...

Determining Madison Bumgarner’s future will be Farhan Zaidi’s first Giant decision

The ink on Farhan Zaidi’s contract as the new San Francisco Giants general manager was barely dry Wednesday when he was asked the question weighing on the mind of every Giants fan.

The question itself was as straight forward as it gets. As for the response? It was not surprisingly vague.

Mind you, with pitchers, the future tends to be ...
