Brewers bat out of order | MLB.com

The Brewers became the first big league team in nearly three years to be penalized for sending the wrong man to the plate, the result of an incorrect lineup card that had Ryan Braun and Jonathan Lucroy listed in the wrong spots. It cost Braun a base hit and gave Lucroy an 0-for-1 start to his day, even though he’d never made it past the on-deck circle.

After Braun smacked a single to center field off Nationals starter Max Scherzer, Washington manager Dusty Baker immediately emerged for a ...

OTP 2016 July 4: Bustos withdraws support for baseball bill

U.S. Rep. Cheri Bustos, D-Ill., has withdrawn her support for a bill that would have exempted minor league baseball players from the minimum wage standards in the Fair Labor Standards Act.

The bill drew nationwide attention, as it was introduced in the midst of a legal fight over whether to pay minor leaguers the minimum wage.

An ode to the intentional walk

Intentional walks stink. Get rid of them entirely.

“I don’t want to lose those moments where you can say, ‘I’ve never seen that before,’ ‘’ said Phillies broadcaster and former big league pitcher Larry Andersen. “If you eliminate the intentional walk, there’s a chance you’ll lose one of those ‘I’ve-never-seen-this-before’ episodes. Those are part of what makes baseball great. Granted, they’re few and far between. But they keep the game a little more entertaining.’‘

Yelich, Realmuto make mark on historic night | marlins.com

The clubs came to Fort Bragg for just one game, which lasted two hours and 59 minutes. They left with the experience of a lifetime.

“Nothing but goosebumps,” Realmuto said. “I got goosebumps multiple times tonight. The flyover for the anthem, and when they were chanting [‘U.S.A.!’].”

Could Yankees emerging rookie throw wrench in rotation? | New York Post

When Mark Teixeira was on a minor league rehab assignment at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, he was impressed by Green.

“When I got back I said he had the best stuff at Triple-A,’’ Teixeira said of Green, who gave the ball from his first big league strikeout to his wife and planned on presenting the ball from his first win to his parents. “He dominated and we needed it.’’

The question now becomes when Green will get a chance to do it again for a team that has three starters with ...

Mike Trout goes big in proposal to longtime girlfriend

Good idea to lock up Trout to a long-term deal.

Four-time All-Star and 2014 AL MVP Mike Trout is known for going big on the baseball field.

So it’s no surprise that the Angels star would propose to his longtime girlfriend in the same way.

Trout retweeted this post from his now-fiancee Jessica Cox on Saturday, showing a “Will you marry me Jess?” written across a clear blue sky.

“I’m so excited to finally be able to officially call this amazing man my fiance!” Cox wrote on her Instagram ...

Wilmer Flores shines as Jose Reyes nears arrival to displace him at third

With Jose Reyes exclusively playing third base during his tune-up in the minors, there is little doubt Flores will be displaced from the position once Reyes is promoted sometime this week. But with Flores on the verge of reverting to his initial backup role, he produced a career game Sunday.

Flores went 6-for-6 with two homers, four RBIs and three runs scored as the New York Mets completed a four-game sweep of the Chicago Cubs with a 14-3 rout at Citi Field.

Flores’ six hits matched the ...

Firing manager John Farrell won’t solve problems of the Boston Red Sox - Boston Red Sox Blog- ESPN

“I mean, I only gave up three earned runs,” Buchholz said, inconceivably, after briskly handing the ball to Farrell and storming off the mound, a bad look that Farrell said he addressed with Buchholz after the game. “It wasn’t the worst performance I’ve had all year.”

Easy to say when you have a 6.31 ERA as a starter. Farrell could say only that he’s “not ready to commit” to Buchholz making his next start, which is an indictment to the manager’s lack of options at his disposal.

As it is, ...

Is this the end for Clay Buchholz in Boston?

No, when you pitch like crap game after game your manager will lose confidence in you. The Red Sox have put Kelly in the bullpen. It’s time they put Buchholz on waivers.

“It was a quick exit,” said Farrell. “We’ve had a chance to talk about it. I know he’s frustrated.”

“Yeah, we talked,” Buchholz said. “I still didn’t want to come out of the game.

“You’ve got to earn that right. I understand that. I’ve been here for a long time. It’s not my first go-round. I’ve had some ups and downs here in ...

Piecoro: Diamondbacks prospect Yoan Lopez leaves team again

Bad news all around. Here’s hoping he finds a measure of happiness away from the game.

Diamondbacks pitching prospect Yoan Lopez left his minor league team on Wednesday night with the intention of leaving the sport entirely, but General Manager Dave Stewart said the club has convinced him to hold off on a decision.

Stewart said the team believes Lopez is dealing with “serious emotional issues,” noting all he has been through in the past two years beginning with his departure from Cuba. ... ...Read More...

First Base: Fort Bragg Game unprecedented | MLB.com

MLB and MLBPA built the stadium. That’s a twist. Still, it’s a nice effort by MLB to do something for the military community in the area.

The Fort Bragg Game was created in a joint effort by MLB and the MLB Players Association to honor our nation’s servicemen and servicewomen. The first game of its kind is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET on Sunday and will be broadcast nationally on ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball, ESPN Radio and MLB.TV. Tickets are limited to military personnel.

2 women make history for Sonoma pro baseball team - SFGate

The bright idea to recruit women was first floated by film director Francis Ford Coppola, who said in a news release that he always wondered why there weren’t co-ed teams in professional baseball given that the game doesn’t rely as much on size and strength as other sports.

“My family would play co-ed baseball games and inevitably the star player would always be an aunt,” said Coppola, whose Virginia Dare Winery, in Geyserville, has been a primary sponsor of the team over the past ...

Buckley: We can celebrate David Ortiz without Ted Williams comparisons | Boston Herald

That’s some good company.

What happened was that it was Big Papi’s 522nd career home run. And diehard Sox fans don’t need a calculator to know that 522 is one more than 521.

As in the number of home runs Ted Williams hit during his iconic, Hall of Fame career.

Yes, it’s true Ortiz also passed Willie McCovey and Frank Thomas, themselves the owners of 521 home runs. Sure, that’s a swell angle: With one swing of the bat, Ortiz stepped past not one, not two, but three Hall of Famers.

Bloomberg: Disney Said to Buy Stake in $3.5 Billion MLB Web Unit

When your traditional revenue streams are drying up, you need to find a way to make the money flow from someplace else:

The deal underscores the importance of the video-streaming business to the future of ESPN, which has been losing viewers and advertising dollars to online media. ESPN has toyed with the idea of selling Web-only packages outside of the traditional cable-TV package, and Disney Chief Executive Officer Robert Iger is making deals to offer ESPN on Internet services such as Sling ...

July 2 Scouting Reports, Prospects 1-10 | FanGraphs Baseball

1. Kevin Maitan, SS/3B, Venezuela (Video 1, 2, 3, 4)

Where to begin? How about at age 12? That’s when scouts started to identify Maitan as this class’s top overall player. By age 14, Maitan already had everything scouts are looking for in a baseball prospect. A picturesque build, good defensive actions at shortstop with plenty of arm for the position and not just usable but potentially impactful swings from both sides of the plate — as well as power projection to accompany it. The Braves ...
