Why Theo Epstein believes Cubs offense will click on all cylinders | CSN Chicago

On MLB Now Dan O’Dowd constantly makes the point that one of the most difficult parts of being a GM is having patience in player development. He says a GM has to believe in talent because player development is not a linear process. Theo gets it.

Here’s one quote but the article has a few others.

“We need time,” Epstein said. “Over time, our guys are going to continue to progress. And when that gap (between talent and performance) exists, it’s a better position to be in than not having ...

Texas Rangers: Excitement from Rangers’ win marred by Adrian Beltre leaving Globe Life in a walking boot | SportsDay

The “good” news: It is apparently not an aggravation of the calf injury that cost him the first two months of the season. The rest of the news: Beltre suffered a left ankle sprain and is likely to miss at least Wednesday’s game against the Mets, if not more.

“It’s tough to put weight on it right now,” Beltre said with uncharacteristic softness, his hands jammed in his pockets,. “It doesn’t feel great. We will say what happens in the next couple of days. But I missed 50-something games, and ...

Ring Lardner: Baseball’s Comedic Genius | The National Pastime Museum

In baseball, it’s important to have a healthy sense of humor. In a sport where even the best hitters fail seven out of every 10 times at bat, how else can anyone survive the long, grueling season without a little laughter along the way?

There is no shortage of amusing stories, and we all have our favorites. Blooper reels have long been a scoreboard staple between innings at a ball game, from Rick Dempsey’s rain-delay antics to the fly ball bouncing off Jose Canseco’s head for a home run. ...

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 6-7-2017

Pittsburgh Press, June 7, 1917:

Local fandom received with unmistakable joy the news that the veteran Hans Wagner had affixed his signature to a Pittsburg contract, and would play first base in today’s game with the Brooklyn Superbas at Forbes Field.

[Pirates owner Barney] Dreyfuss probably realized that he made a mistake when he offered the veteran a reduction in salary last winter. Despite all statements to the contrary, there is no doubt at all that it was this alone which caused John to ...

MLB investigating abuse allegations leveled against Rays’ Derek Norris by ex-fiancée

Major League Baseball is investigating allegations by Derek Norris’ former fiancée that the Tampa Bay Rays catcher “physically and mentally abused’’ her during their relationship, league spokesman Pat Courtney told ESPN.com on Tuesday night.

Kristen Eck made the charges in an Instagram post in which she described being abused by “the man I thought I was going to marry’’ before leaving him a year ago with no access to a car and $300 to her name. She did not specifically refer to Norris by name ...

Bartolo Colon (majors-worst 7.78 ERA) placed on disabled list

“Trade a player a year too early rather than a year too late.” ~ Branch Rickey

The Mets picked just the right time to let him go.

Mired in the worst stretch of his 20-year career, Bartolo Colon is now on the 10-day disabled list with what the Braves said was a left oblique strain.

The move was made Tuesday, a day after Colon (2-7) got rocked again for seven hits and eight earned runs in just 3 2/3 innings of an 11-4 loss to the Phillies, raising his majors-worst ERA to a staggering 7.78, ...

Manfred supports D-backs on ballpark issue | MLB.com

As Dan Szymborski noted on Twitter last night, “The one thing MLB is always decisive and in full agreement on:  that taxpayers should be paying for their stuff.”

“I understand how old the stadium is,” Manfred said. “I think the real issue is, has the landlord made the capital improvements that are always necessary in the stadium in between its 10th and 20th years in order to keep it of a Major League quality. And I think the county’s own study, as well as those studies that have been done by the ...

Jerry Remy: Translators for pitchers should be illegal

The Red Sox analyst made his remarks on air after Tanaka was visited by Japanese translator Shingo Horie and pitching coach Larry Rothschild in the fourth inning at Yankee Stadium.

“I don’t think that should be legal,” Remy said, telling play-by-play man Dave O’Brien, “I really don’t.”

“Learn baseball language. You know, learn; it’s pretty simple,” Remy continued. “You break it down pretty easy between pitching coach and pitcher after a long period of time.”

O’Brien answered: “I would say ...

Mariners working on multi-year contract extension with shortstop Jean Segura

After years of searching for a productive shortstop since the departure of Alex Rodriguez, the Mariners have found one in Jean Segura and they are working to keep him.

A Major League Baseball source confirmed an initial report from Jon Morosi of the MLB Network that the team is working on signing Segura to a multi-year extension. The two sides are in discussions and no parameters of a possible deal were given from the source….

But a report from the Dominican Republic put the deal at 5 years, ...

Reds’ Scooter Gennett 17th MLB player with four home runs in one game

Reds left fielder Scooter Gennett hit four homers—including a grand slam—and drove in a career-high 10 runs in a 13-1 win against the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday night.

Gennett had an RBI single and his second career grand slam off Adam Wainwright, who hadn’t allowed one since 2013. He followed with a two-run shot and a solo homer off John Gant, and another two-run shot off John Brebbia that put Cincinnati ahead 13-1.

He became the 17th major leaguer with four home runs in a game and the ...

Inside The Draft Room: The 2002-2003 Dodgers - MLB Trade Rumors

Some good scouting/draft stories from Logan White.

“We actually had him over Xavier Paul, who we took in the fourth round. Xavier was going to Tulane, but I knew I might be able to sign him if we took him in the fourth. But if I took Matt in the fourth and Xavier in the sixth, I probably would just be able to sign Matt. So that became part of our strategy in how we drafted them. That’s where Mike did a great job. And that’s an important part of scouting – to get a feel for where you have ...

Ryan Howard’s Career Is Dead. The Shift Killed It. | FiveThirtyEight

But although Howard succumbed to the shift, his demise also tells us about the future of the tactic — and why its effectiveness might eventually tail off. When modern teams first started realigning the infield, there were plenty of obvious candidates who would be vulnerable to its effects. But as players like Howard get pushed out of the league by the shift, there will be fewer and fewer hitters on whom it can be used so effectively. Eventually, the rewards of slick defensive positioning will ...

Chicago Tribune: Why Not Hawk Harrelson for the Hall of Fame?

“But, if contribution to baseball is the main criterion for election, Harrelson belongs in the Hall of Fame because he changed the game by popularizing a revolutionary piece of equipment. Today virtually every major-leaguer uses it, as do kids at every level down to Little League, and most girls use it in softball as well.”

Mike Schmidt wouldn’t build team around Odubel Herrera or Spanish-speaking players

It started when Angelo Cataldi brought up Odubel Herrera, and mentioned that Herrera isn’t the kind of player Schmidt was. Schmidt’s response?

“Almost exact opposite.”
Cataldi then asked if a player like Odubel is a guy you can build a team around. And here’s where things get bad.

“My honest answer to that would be no because of a couple of things,.” Schmidt said. “First of all, it’s a language barrier. Because of that, I think he can’t be a guy that would sort of sit in a ...

Rick Porcello is far from his Cy Young form - Beyond the Box Score

Not coming back seems a little extreme.

I believe that Porcello’s 2016 is not coming back, but I also believe that Porcello is better than his current 5.21 RA9 might indicate given some of the bad luck he has had. ZiPS projects a 4.03 RA9 and Steamer projects a 4.30 RA9 for the rest of the season. That seems like a pretty reasonable range to me, and it would be worth 2-3 WAR the rest of the way. If David Price pitches like vintage Price and Chris Sale keeps pitching the way he has been, I ...

Baseball Rediscovers the Two-Way Player

Players might convert—Dodgers All-Star closer Kenley Jansen spent his first five minor-league campaigns as a catcher—but no one has simultaneously succeeded as a full-fledged member of a pitching staff and everyday lineup.

“It wouldn’t shock me if at some point in the future somebody does find their niche as a guy who can do both,” said Padres general manager A.J. Preller, who will pick third in the draft. “We’d be open to at least going down that path with certain guys.”

Major league litter: Can a strategic bat toss turn trash into treasure?

The detail is his bat. Normally Contreras drops his bat directly behind him in the batter’s box, but as he starts toward first base, he pulls it into fair territory and lets it go right where the dirt around the plate meets the grass of the infield. He leaves it directly in line with where a throw home would travel, close to the spot where a one-hop throw would hit the ground, and perpendicular to the foul line so that it provides the widest possible obstacle. The perfect position to disrupt a ...

FSL notes: Phils’ Kilome raising his profile | MiLB.com News

More hope for Phillies fans.

Kilome—ranked as the Phillies’ No. 5 prospect—hasn’t been quite as dominant so far this season after the move up to the Clearwater Threshers in the Class A Advanced Florida State League, but he has definitely stamped himself as a pitcher to watch. Signed for $40,000 by the Phillies as a rail-thin 17-year-old in 2013, Kilome’s profile has risen along with his physical development.

“I’ve grown at least an inch and gained about 60 pounds,” said Kilome, who is now ...
