Baseball brings Byrd, inspirational teen together

Paul Byrd. Good guy.

That first year he became aware of Tarez Miller, who played for a team called the Shamrocks. By the following season, 2010, the Shamrocks had disbanded and Tarez showed up to try out for Byrd’s Georgia Roadrunners. He was clearly good enough. He was also polite and always hustled. But Byrd had a practical concern. Tarez lived an hour and fifteen minutes away. There were regular practices. How would he make the commute?

“I inquired and said, ‘What about his family ...

Jerry Dior, Designer of Major League Baseball’s Logo, Dies at 82 - NYTimes.com

It looks like Killebrew to me.

Per his instructions, he drew a generic baseball player. (In interviews years later, Mr. Dior stressed that the figure was not modeled on Harmon Killebrew as many people, including Killebrew himself, believed.) He executed the design in Magic Marker, originally making it blue and green before switching to a patriotic palette.

“It just came to me,” Mr. Dior told The Wall Street Journal in 2008. “I did the rough sketch and cleaned it up a bit, and that was ...

Peralta is baseball’s most productive shortstop | cardinals.com

Please, MLB decision makers, make the Statcasty defensive numbers available.

While a large part of Peralta’s value comes from his underrated defense, we can also look at Statcast™ and see just how much the ball is jumping off his bat. Peralta’s second double on Friday night, this one coming in the seventh inning off of Juan Nicasio to drive in Kolten Wong with the game’s final run, came off the bat at 103.8 mph. That’s the sixth-hardest tracked non-homer ball of the season for Peralta, who ...

The New York Times:  ‘Ty Cobb: A Terrible Beauty,’ by Charles Leerhsen

Cobb remains a puzzle missing certain pieces. This biography takes the crudely drawn monster away, and in place leaves a more common figure in the world of sports, the player who is “at once the dreaded enemy and the biggest draw.” Leerhsen gives him to us incomplete but human, rather than as a myth served up whole.

The Astros Are Making A Historic Turnaround

The Astros’ turnaround becomes historic, however, when you look at how bad they were two years ago. In 2013, the Astros finished 51-111, good for a .315 winning percentage and the bottom of the division. The team was not felled by injuries or misfortune — it was genuinely terrible in every phase of the game.

Dan Uggla is a good hugger, Washington Nationals say

Uggla is known for his hugs. Freddie Freeman, with the Braves, is perhaps more well-known for his many on-field hugs, but Uggla said he taught that to Freeman. Fans have held up signs at games such as “I Want a Huggla from Uggla” at games. His nickname is, sometimes, Huggla.

“That’s one of our pregame things: hugging before the game,” Harper said. “I don’t konw. Hugs for Uggs, right? That’s what everybody says. I’m a big hugger, too. I hug [Drew] Storen out there every time ...

An advance scout’s theory on why A-Rod is so good this year - NY Daily News

Too bad he’s so unmarketable.

Like most other evaluators, this scout has seen A-Rod appear tense over the years, squeezing the bat in pressure situations. This year has brought noticeable change.

“He has the easiest swing I’ve ever seen from him,” the advance scout said. “He just looks like he doesn’t give a sh-t. And that’s a good thing.”

In other words, a famously self-conscious man is finally allowing himself to let it rip, and enjoy the game.

The scout went on to theorize ...

Oak Mountain’s David Dahl suffers lacerated spleen in collision in minor league baseball game | AL.com

What an awful injury.

At 3:15 p.m. CDT Thursday, Mike Dahl said his son was in surgery.

“They’re trying to save the spleen,” Dahl said. “There was a collision between him and the second baseman, and he took a knee to the spleen. They’re just trying to save it now. He got hit in the face, the nose, the spleen, a bunch of different places, but that’s the main thing right now. He probably has a minor concussion, I would imagine, because he doesn’t remember much about what happened. No broken bones ...

In his first game he struck out 16 batsmen, walked 12, made three wild pitches, and although he allowed but seven hits, he was beaten, 9 to 5. In his second game Harper allowed but four hits, but was beaten, 11 to 1, because he walked 15 men and hit another.
...
Harper’s third game resulted in a no-hit, no-run victory that was one of the most ...

For de Blasio, a Red Sox Fan, the Simple Pleasure of Baseball Gets Complicated

“I’ve waited over 20 years, almost my entire adult life, for a Democratic mayor,” complained Ruben Diaz Jr., the Bronx borough president. “For him to be a Boston Red Sox fan? Come on.”...

Mr. de Blasio has said he plans to attend a Yankees game soon. The team has extended a standing invitation.

“He told me he’s brave,” Mr. Levine said, anticipating a Bronx cheer. “He’ll take the pounding.”

Fire Ben Cherington and John Farrell? That’s not going to happen - Sports - The Boston Globe

A GM has to balance short-term desires and long-term needs. Cherington is a patient sort who leans towards long-term part of the spectrum. Despite having three world championships in the last 12 years, the typical Red Sox fan, like most fans, falls firmly on the short-term desire side of the spectrum. When you add in a rabid, impatient press, that’s not a good mix.

The Accurate RBI Record of Babe Ruth | SABR

The 2012 edition of The Elias Book of Baseball Records states that Ruth holds the top AL mark in four seasons: 1920 (136 RBIs); 1921 (171); 1923 (131); and 1926 (151). This venerable record book is edited by long-time SABR member Seymour Siwoff, president of the Elias Sports Bureau, the official statisticians for Major League Baseball. Meanwhile, MLB.com, the official website for Major League Baseball, states that Ruth was first in RBIs in six AL seasons: 1919 (114 RBIs); 1920 (137); 1921 ...

Joe Kelly: Perennially an Adjustment Away | FanGraphs Baseball

It’s not his mix that’s a problem; it’s his command. Although he could find the magic elixir as a starter, I just don’t see it. Kelly’s place should be the pen, where a simple fastball/slider mix could allow him to be a real weapon.

Noah Syndergaard Is Front and Center in Mets’ New Six-Man Rotation

They plan to begin a six-man rotation and carry it through mid-August.

This is not unprecedented, but it usually does not last long. The natural attrition of pitchers has a way of changing plans.

The rotation plan, they hope, will shave three to four starts off each starter’s regular workload. Colon, who is 42, rarely throws off the mound between starts and has told Dan Warthen, the pitching coach, that he likes the idea. Others are skeptical.
