10-26-2012 WBC update: Blyleven back for Netherlands, Australia beats Sydney

In Australia, the national team is doing early warm-ups for the WBC (giving players more opportunities to play together, let some younger players get experience, etc.) by playing a series against the Sydney Blue Sox. The Baseballroos won game 1, 5-3.

The top link is to a story that confirms that Bert Blyleven will again be the pitching coach for the Netherlands. The HOFer was born in Holland, although he grew up in the USA.

For the briefest of moments I thought the headline meant Blyleven would pitch for the Dutch. That would certainly get me to watch the WBC.

Hell yeah. I'd love to see that.

I bet he could pull it off. Pat Jordan threw a credible minor-league inning at a pretty advanced age, and some of the WBC competition is about the same caliber.

Didn't a team in the Israeli Baseball League draft Sandy Koufax a couple of years ago?

Did the Israeli Baseball League ever play any games, or was it just an extended publicity stunt/book proposal?

Wiki states that a six-team league played a 45-game schedule in 2007, but that the league was badly financed and folded after one season.

What Vortex said. They got through the whole year and such, but after that it fell apart due to it's poor organization and finances.
