josh hamilton is kind of a latter day hack wilson where a team gives up on him because of his personal demons and he becomes the centerpiece of a very good team. (and yes, i know hamilton got dumped more than once, sue me)

inside part of the plate?

that ball was running away from hamilton

bautista reminds me matt williams with the peeking over his sholder. williams chin used to wear out that tiny section of his uniform as he worked to keep his head in the same place

anyone else remember that?

Can't recall a relief pitcher ever appearing in the 2nd inning of an ASG.

Did you watch last year's?
   209. Tulo's Fishy Mullet (mrams) Posted: July 10, 2012 at 08:51 PM (#4179231)
I seem to recall relief pitchers appearing in early ASG innings recently.
   210. Brian C Posted: July 10, 2012 at 08:53 PM (#4179232)
Well, I can't recall an ASG manager ever putting his own closer in there for the second inning.

I vividly remember my mom speculating whether he had a drooling problem.
   212. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: July 10, 2012 at 08:53 PM (#4179234)
mrams

yes and it stinks

the single biggest change in the modern game that i have come to loathe is the pernicious use of relievers.

it's everywhere

JOSE BAUTISTA! (non-standard version)

Yes, though my favorite Williams move was in the field, when he'd go over & stand right next to the runner and coach at 3b, eavesdropping.
   219. Gamingboy Posted: July 10, 2012 at 08:56 PM (#4179241)
Pretty sure he made a good catch last season too.

   220. Greg Franklin Posted: July 10, 2012 at 08:56 PM (#4179243)
Brian C, it's unusual but I think "Rangers" is less impressive than "TEXAS" when spread across a jersey. That's my guess.

If you believe "this time it counts," the rational choice to win this game is to play nine flame-throwing relief aces, pitch them one inning each, and hope you score a run yourself. Glad to see Wash showing a little rationality since Verlander throws as hard as any reliever.
   221. Good cripple hitter Posted: July 10, 2012 at 08:58 PM (#4179244)
Pretty sure he made a good catch last season too.

It's funny how Bautista's best moments in the all-star game are both sliding catches in the outfield.

THE DARK KNIGHT RISES looks great.

Eh. Seems a little overwrought.

Shouldn't they be hitting the ball at Dan Uggla?
   224. Guts Posted: July 10, 2012 at 09:00 PM (#4179248)
It's good to see Dave Duncan back in the dugout, even if only for one game.

NL has blown two four run leads over the past few years in the ASG.

Personally, I wouldn't have pegged McCarver as a Barry Manilow type.
   231. Gamingboy Posted: July 10, 2012 at 09:06 PM (#4179255)
If I was a big-league starting pitcher, I would openly say I wanted to go at least six in the ASG, just because.

Gio Gonzalez coming in.

"Mmmm. Real chicken."

This should not be a selling point.

The Neil deGrasse Tyson tweets about baseball are all kinds of awesome.

Curious that intent is assigned by announcers when a batter gets a hit. Yet 70% of the time the player can't get a hit at all

Reminds of Data on Star Trek.

I've always wanted to hear the player that admits that he was not in fact looking to go the other way, the ball just went there.
   239. salvomania Posted: July 10, 2012 at 09:12 PM (#4179265)
So, according to FOX, Napoli leads AL catchers with a .340 OBP.

Is Joe Mauer now exclusively a 1b/DH?
   240. Gamingboy Posted: July 10, 2012 at 09:12 PM (#4179266)
Does it disturb anyone else that "The Los Angeles Angels" baseball team translates directly to "The The Angels Angels"?

the arnold movie version had some great character actors as well as a young sharon stone.

Jayson Stark:

Only one team has ever blown a 5-0 lead & lost an All Star Game. AL led 5-0 in 6th in '55 but lost in 12, 6-5.

A surprising lack of actors from Fox series at the game so far.

Right after Fox introduced the "unhittable" Harrison, 2 base hits.

He did look like he was about to blow chunks when they showed him in the bullpen.

Why would you ever send a pitching coach to the mound? Just replace the ####### pitcher and be done with it!
   290. Crispix reaches boiling point with lackluster play Posted: July 10, 2012 at 09:25 PM (#4179316)
I know Harrison is a good pitcher (although he just gave up six straight hits), but it's odd to turn on the All-Star game in the 4th inning and completely fail to recognize the person on the mound.

They just said Melky Cabrera admitted he "was eating everything" when he was with the Yankees. But they left out that he was eating even more than everything with the Braves.

I think Crispix had a stroke.

Damn wireless keyboard.

I'm an AL fan, but it really makes me happy to see a Rangers pitcher get lit up. Of course, now that I've siad that, Weaver will get drilled, assuming Washington puts an Angel into the game.
