2012 Games 162 OmniChatter

No spots will be at stake, but plenty of positioning will be, and, hey, there could be the first Triple Crown since ‘67, which is neat…

Chatter up!

Wow it's still Balfour with a 7 run lead. I guess he has two days off for sure

This is the biggest A's win, for me, since #20.

Assuming it happens, yeah.

What's Balfour's entrance music? I wasn't paying attention as they showed him coming into the game.

Thanks Jan Brady!

If the Mets win, they'll probably finished tied for the 10th (and last protected) spot in the draft. What's the tiebreaker there?
   310. Bourbon Samurai in Asia Posted: October 03, 2012 at 06:51 PM (#4253030)
Oh I just realized I've been alone in the office for 45 minutes and can take my headphones off

Hell, *I'm* afraid of Balfour. And I'm an A's fan. Watching at home, on TV.

Funny visual to see the Rangers' batboy throw his arms up in celebration on that last out.

Congrats to the Oakland Athletics and their fans. Still sinking in here, but what a season!
   335. JoeHova Posted: October 03, 2012 at 06:58 PM (#4253057)
Wow, great comeback for the A's, not only in this game, but in the season as a whole. I don't think many people thought the Rangers were in any danger of losing the division pretty much since the season started.
   336. sardonic Posted: October 03, 2012 at 06:58 PM (#4253058)
So sounds like:

Yankees win => A's play ALDS Game 1 on Saturday at home vs. Detroit
Yankees lose => A's play ALDS Game 1 on Sunday at home vs. Texas/Baltimore
   337. PreservedFish Posted: October 03, 2012 at 06:58 PM (#4253059)
That was awesome. I'm totally going to a playoff game.
   338. Gamingboy Posted: October 03, 2012 at 06:59 PM (#4253060)
Maybe it's because Balfour is Australian, or maybe it's because it was used in the Moneyball trailer, but I can't but help but think of this song.
   339. Shooty Survived the Shutdown of '14! Posted: October 03, 2012 at 06:59 PM (#4253061)
Not to get all maudlin and ####, but my Grandma was a booster for the A's for years. This makes me think of her. She would have enjoyed this one.

BTW, MLB TV, the A's have won more than 6 AL West titles, guys. A LOT more!
   340. Shredder Posted: October 03, 2012 at 06:59 PM (#4253062)
Well, at least Texas made it competitive. Hilarious.

Crap, just bought ALDS game 1 tickets. Oops.

Edit: Turns out they are Home Game 1 tickets, so they'll be good for next Tuesday or Wednesday.
   344. Gamingboy Posted: October 03, 2012 at 07:04 PM (#4253067)
Hey, remember how fun this game was? Now we're going to have TWO GAME 162S with Playoff repercussions going on... AT ONCE! While a guy aims to lock up a Triple Crown!

Amazing GF is amazing: sends text (from like Bakersfield or wherever the F she's working today):
"Ok. I can't stand it. I already bought us 2 tickets last night to one american league championship game (the 2nd one)... I think in section 108 pretty close to field on 1st base side."

Ye Gods, whatta woman.
   346. Gamingboy Posted: October 03, 2012 at 07:10 PM (#4253071)
I've got Home Game 1 tickets for ALDS in Baltimore, Sardonic, so there may be problems between us.

EDIT: Nevermind, saw you had A'S TICKETS.

why would the a's start on the road? is there a 2/3 split for road/home?

Big congratulations to Oakland and all their fans (including, of course, Shooty here) on the completion of a truly amazing season. Only thing that would make it better if their AL East dopplegangers could somehow pull off the same ridiculously improbable accomplishment tonight...and tomorrow. BASEBALL GODS, CAN YOU HEAR OUR PRAYERS??
   352. Crosseyed and Painless Posted: October 03, 2012 at 07:19 PM (#4253084)
Dug out my copy of Baseball Prospectus 2002 in honor of the A's.

Only name on the cover is Sheehan. Cover boy is Adam Dunn, which is sort of funny considering the SABR-types are being attacked left and right for (essentially) putting too much value on Trout's baserunning and defense.

Congrats to the A's fans and, geez, gut punch to you Rangers fans. I hope you know that, while we're all celebrating the A's victory, deep down we really wish it had happened to the Yankees.

Except for Shredder who hates you.

Most nights in the NPB, I'd guess.

Iwakuma and Darvish faced each other just a couple of weeks ago. That was the eighth time it had happened in MLB.

Iwakuma and Darvish faced each other just a couple of weeks ago.

I think I remember one of them said something like: "Does an American pitcher think it's weird when he is facing an American?"
   364. Every Inge Counts Posted: October 03, 2012 at 07:31 PM (#4253103)
So Miguel Cabrera just won the Triple Crown....

I think I remember one of them said something like: "Does an American pitcher think it's weird when he is facing an American?"

Yes, that was Darvish.

“It’s like another start,” said Darvish, speaking through an interpreter. “I wonder if American pitchers feel anything different when they face other American pitchers.”
   366. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: October 03, 2012 at 07:36 PM (#4253106)
It's amazing to me that this is the end of the Daisuke era in Boston. I drove to Fenway to pay my season ticket bill the day after he was signed and literally the entire ballpark was surround by media, predominately Japanese. I've never seen anything like it.
   367. Athletic Supporter can feel the slow rot Posted: October 03, 2012 at 07:38 PM (#4253109)

Seconded heartily.

Whatever the record for most times warming up in the bullpen used to be Clayton Mortensen now has it. I'm pretty sure he's contractually required to warm up every game.
   369. Textbook Editor Posted: October 03, 2012 at 07:39 PM (#4253112)
Well we'll always have Game 7 of the 2007 ALCS...
   370. JJ1986 Posted: October 03, 2012 at 07:40 PM (#4253113)
There's a "wouldn't be a homer anywhere else"

SING IT STERLING!!
   372. Gamingboy Posted: October 03, 2012 at 07:41 PM (#4253116)
Stupid Yankees. Stupid Red Sox. Stupid Daisuke. Stupid Rays.

(However, not stupid Curtis Granderson. Man's a class act.)

   375. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: October 03, 2012 at 07:42 PM (#4253122)
Darvish also faced Kuroda earlier this year and it was an awesome pitcher's duel.
   376. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: October 03, 2012 at 07:42 PM (#4253123)
I was t game seven of the 2007 ALCS but for me it'll always be game three of the World Series. The RBI single was my "holy crap it's going to happen again" moment.
   377. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: October 03, 2012 at 07:43 PM (#4253125)
On the bright side for you Yankee haters, if they win, Orioles vs. Rangers is a pretty sweet Wild Card game matchup. Go O's!
   378. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: October 03, 2012 at 07:46 PM (#4253128)
Don't think this is going to have the drama of last year.
   379. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: October 03, 2012 at 07:46 PM (#4253129)
Granderson could still deny Cabrera the triple crown if he goes Mark Whitten on the Red Sox.

Don't think this is going to have the drama of last year.

Game 161 was pretty choice this year. And anyway, we get the Wild Card games. Maybe those will be awesome, as contrived as they are.

Oh, and the Yankees are up 2, the O'd down 1. Long way to go.
   382. Eric J can SABER all he wants to Posted: October 03, 2012 at 07:50 PM (#4253134)
Note to all teams: Sign Dan Johnson before Game 162 next year. He just homered for the White Sox.
   383. Gamingboy Posted: October 03, 2012 at 07:50 PM (#4253135)
I got tickets for Baltimore's first ALDS game.

I've been waiting my whole damn life to see a playoff game, and I'm going to be very, very, pissed if I don't have a chance to use them.
   384. DKDC Posted: October 03, 2012 at 07:52 PM (#4253139)
Come on, Boston.

Jeez, Davis continues to be an adventure out there in RF.
   385. JJ1986 Posted: October 03, 2012 at 07:55 PM (#4253142)
Nice catch.
   386. DKDC Posted: October 03, 2012 at 07:55 PM (#4253144)
WOW!

I did not think Jones was going to get to that.
   387. Lassus Posted: October 03, 2012 at 07:57 PM (#4253145)
Kay doing the Sterling on YES. "You can't predict this game."
   388. dr. scott Posted: October 03, 2012 at 07:57 PM (#4253146)
So if the Yankees manage to lose, Oakland would play the wild card winner.

Im not sure why I think this, but if it were Texas, it would just be exhausting.
   389. JJ1986 Posted: October 03, 2012 at 07:59 PM (#4253148)
####### Red Sox
   390. DKDC Posted: October 03, 2012 at 07:59 PM (#4253149)
Well, I have tickets for Thursday in Baltimore, Friday in Baltimore, and Friday in Texas.

I guess I'll be booking travel and hotel tonight.
   391. Gamingboy Posted: October 03, 2012 at 08:00 PM (#4253150)
The Yankees are not going to manage to lose, because the Red Sox suck and Bobby Valentine is a troll to everybody.
   392. Jolly Old St. Nick Is A Jolly Old St. Crip Posted: October 03, 2012 at 08:00 PM (#4253151)
