2012 Games 162 OmniChatter

No spots will be at stake, but plenty of positioning will be, and, hey, there could be the first Triple Crown since ‘67, which is neat…

Chatter up!

Is it safe to say that a College-Age Ford would win every race?

Must race in presidential form.

Of course it's the great Michael Young who battles through an AB for the big hit.

Anything really can happen in baseball.

(GWB was a good but not great ballplayer at Yale, but nowhere close to Ford's football career, where he had a true chance to go into the NFL)

Wow, uh, Kottaras...... uhhh...
   109. Tom Nawrocki Posted: October 03, 2012 at 04:33 PM (#4252718)
I'd like to see the GameDay scout engage in a roundtable with some GameDay stats. Do you think such a thing would get linked here?
   110. Greg K Posted: October 03, 2012 at 04:33 PM (#4252720)
Kottaras slides ahead of Paul Bernardo on the list of people I'm ashamed to share a hometown with.

This game is going poorly

What did Kottaras do? I am at work so all I can see is that he committed an error.
   113. PreservedFish Posted: October 03, 2012 at 04:35 PM (#4252725)
Eisenhower, Bush Jr and FDR were all cheerleaders, I believe. I think that disqualifies all of them. Well, from real races. It probably overqualifies them for mascot racing.
   114. Tom Nawrocki Posted: October 03, 2012 at 04:36 PM (#4252727)
Eisenhower played football at West Point, before he tore up his knee.

He lost a ball in the sun and fell on his ass as the ball fell harmlessly in the infield because he missed it.
   116. JoeHova Posted: October 03, 2012 at 04:37 PM (#4252731)
Well, this kind of sucks. I was hoping for an exciting game to decide the division. Not that the game couldn't get exciting later but the odds of that happening seem to have declined significantly.
   117. Bourbon Samurai in Asia Posted: October 03, 2012 at 04:38 PM (#4252734)
God damn it A's! Don't ruin my perfect postseason!
   118. spycake Posted: October 03, 2012 at 04:38 PM (#4252736)
So, early returns suggest Texas will hang on to win the division, and the A's will be traveling to Baltimore (or perhaps New York) on Friday.

EDIT: I guess this assumes at least an Orioles victory. Baltimore could still travel to Oakland with a loss tonight.
   119. JoeHova Posted: October 03, 2012 at 04:38 PM (#4252738)
Darn, so sad to be watching on mlb.tv and having to miss the Taken 2 preview that the A's announcers just hyped.

although that sounds sarcastic, it was only half-sarcastic. Does anybody else find the lack of commercials on mlb.tv distracting? I kind of enjoyed getting to see out of market commercials when I had extra innings instead. The dead silence that mlb.tv uses is somehow more annoying to me than commercials.
   120. The Chronicles of Reddick Posted: October 03, 2012 at 04:38 PM (#4252739)
Yikes that went poorly
   121. Fred Lynn Nolan Ryan Sweeney Agonistes Posted: October 03, 2012 at 04:39 PM (#4252741)
The idea that Kottaras' play could have been made with "ordinary effort" suggests that scorers need to get out of their press-boxes and stare into the sun for a change.
   122. Greg K Posted: October 03, 2012 at 04:39 PM (#4252742)

Assuming games in Atlanta and Baltimore (or New York), are we in for an afternoon game on Friday?
   123. Gamingboy Posted: October 03, 2012 at 04:43 PM (#4252747)
Eisenhower played football at West Point, before he tore up his knee.

Good point. And you know who he tore up his knee trying to tackle, if memory serves right?

Jim Thorpe.

(Or was it his shoulder?)

(I also seem to remember that there is a possibly apocryphal claim that Eisenhower played in the very low minors under an alias...)

I imagine they will be something like 5 PM / 8 PM EST start times. Although Oakland could still host -- would they get the late game? Then again, MLB has started Oakland playoff games at 10 AM local time before, so perhaps they don't care about Oakland fans.

This one is doing it's part to live up to the standard set last year. I wasn't watching but it seemed like Melvin stuck with Griffin much too long in that 3rd inning. In a game like this you gotta be very quick on the trigger finger.

It's a bit early in the evening to be working blue boys.

And wow this game is setting a pretty good standard. Only the fourth inning. This might finish in primetime on the East Coast at this rate.
   152. deputydrew Posted: October 03, 2012 at 05:14 PM (#4252804)
This sure is a good way to start the playoff games.
   153. PreservedFish Posted: October 03, 2012 at 05:15 PM (#4252805)
Don't worry, soon there will be a snooty backlash about this not actually being a good game because it's been poorly played.
   154. Dr. Vaux Posted: October 03, 2012 at 05:15 PM (#4252806)
And Ryan Dempster was the worst trade deadline acquisition of the year, as far as what he was acquired to do compared to what he did.

The Oakland radio guys were heavily complimentary during his 7 pitch third inning. Of course they also sounded like they were going to kill themselves. I imagine they are a lot peppier now.

   159. JoeHova Posted: October 03, 2012 at 05:21 PM (#4252815)
Damn, I was not expecting Hamilton to drop that. I guess that's why you shouldn't try to half-ass a catch.

I'm disappointed, Shooty - shouldn't you have a fridge just for that? And well-stocked as well?

I've currently got about 2.5 cases of various beers, plus 3-4 bombers and 3-4 bottles of wine in my beer fridge. Two problems: 1) I need them to get through this game; 2) it's at home, and I'm at work.

I was really happy with how that Ryan Dempster business turned out. I didn't like Delgado for Dempster at all, and I would have preferred Maholm to Dempster, straight up. That the Braves got Maholm plus Reed Johnson for less than Delgado (Vizcaino and Chapman) was very refreshing.

That's also the bad news.

My liver and my pocketbook still ache from that evening at the Westin North Shore bar

I was at the Arlington Hotel in Hot Springs, Arkansas, which was in a way fortunate. I was there for both Games Six and Seven, and missed a lot of fun stuff at a conference I was supposed to be attending, but the upside is that if I never go to the Arlington again in my life (a reasonable possibility), I will never have any hideous flashbacks. Both my TV room at home and the Ballpark at Arlington are still safe territory for me.

And he finishes up with the .300/.400/.500 intact.
