2012 Games 162 OmniChatter

No spots will be at stake, but plenty of positioning will be, and, hey, there could be the first Triple Crown since ‘67, which is neat…

Chatter up!

The Rangers have no chance against a pitcher as good as Evan Scribner.

Evan Scribner, October Hero.

Really nice job by Scribner.

That would be.... Game 7 of the ALCS? Right?

Correct.

What's the conflict?

My inability to read! Ignore that post, it is wrong.

You'll have to take that up with the people who scheduled the Wild Card game for Friday.
Close enough. This game would be a lot better under last year's system where the loser could miss out on the playoffs altogether. Especially if that team was the Rangers.

"Is it safe to say that a College-Age Ford would win every race?"

Or Dwight Eisenhower before the knee injury at West Point. One of the best high school athletes in the country, he looked like he was going to be a football star, playing both offense and defense in those days, when he suffered a knee injury that ended all that.

Cabrera's triple crown looking very safe.

Saw a tweet from Susan Slusser that reminded me about Hamilton's ocular keratitis issues a couple of weeks ago. He says he's fine, but given what happened in Texas when he let a couple of balls get by him and the play today, you have to wonder - at least a little.
   212. BDC Posted: October 03, 2012 at 05:46 PM (#4252880)
that gaffe will be part of the tapestry woven by the Rangers FO to justify not re-signing him

I agree. And unfairly (see, "should not be playing CF anymore").

What is Wash saving his bullpen for?

College aged Jimmy Carter played lightweight (sprint) football at Annapolis. I can't imagine a 20 year old at a service academy who wasn't at least pretty quick.

Managing a bullpen in October is incredibly hard.

Ha! If you're going to take Holland out, why let him pitch to Cespedes?

For the WC playoff game on Friday? They'll be well-rested.

Seriously, though, it's always fun to watch Washington manage; it's like watching Brenly during the 2001 WS, only in some ways much funnier because it's spread out over so many more games. The playoffs would be poorer without him around to entertain us.

   219. Bourbon Samurai Posted: October 03, 2012 at 05:55 PM (#4252894)
Let's pick up one more!
   220. Shooty Survived the Shutdown of '14! Posted: October 03, 2012 at 05:55 PM (#4252895)
Let the lefty face the righty and then bring in the righty to face the lefty. Hey, man, like, whatever.
   221. Tom Nawrocki Posted: October 03, 2012 at 05:56 PM (#4252896)
So I guess these A's are better than the 1998 Yankees.
   222. Shooty Survived the Shutdown of '14! Posted: October 03, 2012 at 06:00 PM (#4252905)
I hope Ryan Cook isn't gassed. His 4th consecutive game coming up.
   223. Bourbon Samurai Posted: October 03, 2012 at 06:01 PM (#4252907)
I don't want to risk finding a bar with the mlb package so I'm just going to stay in my office till the game is over. Can I send the intern for beer? is that ehtical?

So, like Washington, Melvin does something odd with his reliever(s) - leaving the lefty to face Beltre then pulling him for Cook(?)

Yes...and as long as you give him one.

Given the rate at which people are sending their girlfriends for beer this afternoon, I think so.

Cook and Balfour have each pitched the last four days. I'm sure Melvin wanted Blevins to hang in longer.

   241. Greg K Posted: October 03, 2012 at 06:09 PM (#4252931)
That second strike was a pretty deadly slider.

EDIT: Strike three worked too......what a game.

Heck of a job by Cook.

Banjo man's in the park!!!
   250. BDC Posted: October 03, 2012 at 06:14 PM (#4252943)
My God, I'm out of beer now too. I don't feel like having any whipped-cream flavor vodka, though. Maybe after the Rangers lose.

Just posted on A's telecast: A's have not spent one day alone in 1st place this season. Only other teams to win their division or league and have that happen: 2006 Twins and 1951 Giants. But not counting anything yet...

1951 Giants

Happy Anniversary, by the way.

Oddly enough, like 2006 the team that sucked down the stretch and got passed could still make it to the World Series.
   256. Willie Mayspedester Posted: October 03, 2012 at 06:20 PM (#4252952)

Not Hamilton's day.

YES sit down Hamilton!
   263. BDC Posted: October 03, 2012 at 06:26 PM (#4252966)
the team that sucked down the stretch and got passed

If you're referring to the Rangers :) I'd argue that they didn't really start sucking till last Friday night. They played very well in August and quite reasonably in September. The A's have played brilliantly, and if they win today they'll have truly won the division, much more than the Rangers have lost it.
   264. Lassus Posted: October 03, 2012 at 06:27 PM (#4252969)
The Mets are really dragging the torture out in their own style.

Norris!

"Say, Wash, how hard is it going to be to beat the Orioles or Yankees while playing like you have been playing the last month?"
"It'll be incredibly hard."

Holy crap Derek Norris

Derek Norris may have just topped that walkoff against the Giants for me.

Dynamic pricing: A's Division Series tickets have gone up about 50% since the start of this game.

So... I bought ALCS tickets. LET'S GO OAKLAND! (also, no one can blow a 4 run lead in half an inning, ri... oh.)
   273. Roger McDowell spit on me! Posted: October 03, 2012 at 06:29 PM (#4252980)
Can we see Jim Miller in the 9th? Yeah, the A's will have two days off if they win, but I'd still like to try to rest Balfour with a four run lead.
   274. Lassus Posted: October 03, 2012 at 06:29 PM (#4252981)
Ramon Ramirez is a disaster.
   275. Greg K Posted: October 03, 2012 at 06:30 PM (#4252982)
If you're referring to the Rangers :)

I was more referring to the 2006 Tigers but point taken!
   276. Greg K Posted: October 03, 2012 at 06:31 PM (#4252984)
How many runs ahead do they need to be to not use Balfour?
   277. 'Spos Posted: October 03, 2012 at 06:31 PM (#4252986)
The Mets are clearly playing to lose.
   278. Shooty Survived the Shutdown of '14! Posted: October 03, 2012 at 06:32 PM (#4252987)

   279. Greg K Posted: October 03, 2012 at 06:32 PM (#4252988)
That was not pretty.
   280. Gamingboy Posted: October 03, 2012 at 06:32 PM (#4252989)

   282. The Chronicles of Reddick Posted: October 03, 2012 at 06:33 PM (#4252993)
That was a bad error by the Rangers. Looks like the pressure has really set in.
   283. Gamingboy Posted: October 03, 2012 at 06:35 PM (#4252994)
The Rays have to wonder if there's some way that the Rangers can be disqualified from playoff consideration through this game....

Wow. Hell yeah.
   287. Gamingboy Posted: October 03, 2012 at 06:40 PM (#4253001)
How hard is it to do basic fielding, Wash?

"It's incredibly hard."

A celebration to last throughout the year
So bring your good times, and your laughter, too
'Cause we're gonna celebrate your party with you...

Congratulations to the A's, who as I say, truly won this one by playing their ###es off.

Now I must wish for an Orioles' loss, so that I can see them play at Arlington on Friday. I have a ticket, but it's for a largely theoretical game right now.

Bob, I'm 99.999% stoked right now, and that .001 % is because you're a fantastic Rangers fan. At the end of the day, you guys can still be World Series Champs this year.

This is the biggest A's win, for me, since #20.
   300. Crispix reaches boiling point with lackluster play Posted: October 03, 2012 at 06:48 PM (#4253018)
Evan Scribner and Everett Teaford should really be in the same bullpen.

Grant Balfour: Second Greatest Australian Baseball Player in MLB History.

Behind Dave Nilsson, I assume.
