I was thinking that Game 162 had a chance to match last year's, but the tag line is right. Only positioning is at stake, and although that positioning means a lot more than it used to, it's not the same as the win or go home tilts we saw last year.
It's a season ending series of de facto playoff games agains the Red Sox, and the Yankees have not drawn more than 41,000. Something is very wrong.
Trost and Levine destroyed the brand. ####### dumbshits
In 2007 this series would have been packed to the gills. You would not have been able to fit a pea into Yankee Stadium. Perhaps destroyed the "brand" is the wrong term. They irrevocably and utterly destroyed the experience of going to Yankee Stadium and the atmosphere of a big home game.
I was watching a Reds game sometime last week: the house was packed, loud, and into the game. I found myself thinking: "it would be cool of Yankee Stadium was ever like that." Then I realized...I'm wishing Yankee ####### Stadium had the atmosphere of Great American Ballpark!!
Um, not even close. I'm sure fans of a few teams will remember last nights games, but IMO 2011's game 162 is something few baseball fans will ever forget.
Um, not even close.
Well that's just, like, your opinion man.
Reds and Nats are currently tied for best record in the nl. Is the tiebreaker head to head?
Yes, and the Nats have that.
Doesn't really make a difference, as both of them own the tiebreaker against Baltimore. The Birds can end up 2, 4, or 5, but it isn't impacted by that game.
EDIT: I suppose the question for a Birds fan is, would you rather have to play the wildcard game against Texas or Oakland if it comes to that.
This has a good chance of being my favorite baseball season ever.
Given the likely wild card starters, I don't think this is close.
I'd rather face Milone/Straily than Darvish/Holland, even if the Rangers didn't have a much scarier lineup.
Go Rangers.
I think this is pretty likely. I'm optimistic neither Straily or Blackley will be getting postseason starts.
Speaking of Blackley, I'm really happy for him. I think his start last night went a long way to keeping him in the Big Leagues another year.
So, you'd root for the Rangers.
On the other hand, if you win the play-in, you get the top seed. Which could be any of the Yankees, A's or Rangers (also the O's, but then this is moot). I'd rather play the better team in the one-off game and then the weaker team in the LDS. So, you'd rather root for the A's.
This has a good chance of being my favorite baseball season ever.
A Yanks/Orioles ALCS and either of them playing the Nats in the World Series would be a dream outcome for me. But the main thing is to get rid of the Braves and the Cardinals as quickly as possible.
I'm a Cardinal fan who even sort of agrees with this.
Then I realized...I'm wishing Yankee ####### Stadium had the atmosphere of Great American Ballpark!!
GABP is a fun park when it's full. Actually, now that they have finally finished the first part of The Banks development, GABP is fun before, during, and after games. There's such a better atmosphere now that there are, you know, some people that live down there and nightclubs and restaurants next door to the stadium.
I was thinking about calling in sick and going to the game but will have to "watch" from my phone. Go A's.
If Trout goes 5-for-5, he'll raise his average to .3297. Cabrera would then have to do better than 0-for-2 (which would leave him at .3296). Though would they round both to .330 and call it a tie, giving him the triple crown?
I'm very excited by this. I can't believe it's been 45 years - in the 45 years preceding the last Triple Crown, it happened 10 times (not counting Yaz), including twice each by Hornsby and Williams.
Up next - someone hits .400. Maybe that will be Trout.
I heard they won't take down the tarp until the World Series, although I'm sure if there's enough demand that will change.
Also, I'm preparing a GAME 162 CHECKLIST! Taking suggestions...

Stephen Drew took over at shortstop about a month ago. In 38 games, he has a 3.71 RF/G, with a .966 F%.
Drew took over from Cliff Pennington, who had a 4.54 / .979 over 93 games.
Pennington moved over to second base, where Jemile Weeks was 4.19 / .977.
In 31 games at 2b, Pennington is at 4.77 / .987.
So, is Pennington THAT much better in the field than Drew AND Weeks? Or what?
Pennington is a pretty great fielder. I think the A's will Drew walk and give him back the SS job next year.
Someone gets pied []
Omar Vizquel maybe. I think there was some noise that Carlos Lee might retire after the season.
For what it is worth, Francona said on PTI yesterday that his baseball brethren around the league want to face the As in a postseason less than anyone due to pitching and clicking on all cylinders.
edit: Playoffs. D'uh. Nevermind.
Is Chipper playing today? Obviously he'll play in the post-season but regular season wise. (Coke to the Shooter)
Jason Giambi
Jim Thome
Darren Oliver
Would Leyland hang 'em up if Detroit wins it all?
Planned. At least, I think so. I read that he'd go "an inning or two." I hope he didn't hurt himself in the process.

Bonus if it's Shelby Miller in his first career start.
Is Henry Blanco off of the DL? He's pretty obviously done. I have a suspicion that Jason Isringhausen will hang them up, though he could probably get a deal somewhere if he wanted to come back.
Braves-Pirates playing now
Phillies-Nats playing now
Astros-Cubs 1:20 Local time
Rangers-A's 12:35
Mets-Marlins - 4:10
Angels-Mariners - 3:40
Rockies-Diamondbacks - 5:10
Other than those?
By the way, is everybody now happy with the schedule switcharound that the MLB regular season ends midweek instead of on a weekend? It's awesome to have all this going on midweek when there's no other sports news. Games 161, 162, 163, and the wild card play-in all get to take the spotlight rather than getting stuck under football's shadow.
Wouldn't be his last game anyway if he does what TLR did and manage the All-Star Game the next season.
That would have been awesome.

(after first page for this chatter, the list is set and will only be posted once per page unless there is a storm of checkmarks)
I don't think Teddy should ever have won. They went too long with it to quit. Maybe there really was pressure coming from someplace.
Castro already in. Ichiro* and Adam Jones sure to follow. And Prince Fielder might as well, too, after playing the first 161.
Just missed by a game (or two, if they don't play today):
Butler, Miguel Cabrera, Gordon, Headley, Cano.
(* - Suzuki gets an asterisk because he missed two games with the Mariners but made them up by getting traded to a team that had played two fewer games at the time)
He lost enough races that way, and I didn't see Lincoln, Jefferson or Washington helping him back up when he got blindsided.
Also, Nats up 3-1! Hold one and get that #1 seed!
EDIT: Sadly, they all do.
They should start varying the Presidents who run. Who wouldn't love to see Millard Fillmore, Rutherford Hayes, and Chester Arthur in an epic sprint? And to get things started, for Opening Day next season, they should invite Presidents Carter, Clinton, Obama, and the two Bushes (and Romney, if he wins), and have them do a real live Presidents' Race. Obama vs. George W. in an actual race; who wouldn't love that (well, besides the Secret Service, maybe)?
I didn't think he'd win either, but my guess is that after seven seasons, eighty games a year, they simply ran out of ideas for finding ways for him to lose. After leaving the tv on long enough after the football game on Sunday to see what the Simpsons is doing with their opening credits gag these days, I can sympathize.
It's not enough to make him always win, there's a chance to do a full blown heel turn here. Have Teddy always win, but by flukes or outside interference. Then have the Phillie Phanatic and any other NL mascots you can get violently beat down the other three presidents while they cry out for Teddy to save them... but he apparently doesn't hear what's going on and he just wins the race. He then becomes arrogant, winning races running backwards and wearing a crown shaped like the world series trophy, oblivious to the fact that he's a fluke champion. Maybe he starts 'accidentally' tripping opposing presidents. Maybe some of the Nationals interfere to try and prevent Teddy from cheating to win, but they accidentally clothesline the wrong president and Teddy gains another empty victory. Soon the crowd starts chanting "die Teddy die" and throw trash on the field after another Teddy win, while he cups his ears and soaks up what he believes is the roar of a crowd that loves their champion.
It'd be a real shame if this became an ordinary race, might as well invert things.
Friday:
STL at ATL
NLDS:
CIN vs. SFG
WAS vs. ATL/STL
Nice, but I think the idea of someone rising up to shoot Lincoln might have been... uncomfortable.
Most importantly, I win a six pack of my choice.
ugh
Would be fun to see Taft race.
Least interesting Presidential race: Taft, Cleveland, FDR and John Adams.
