2012 World Series Game 1 OMNICHATTER

The National Pastime’s pinnacle event begins. It was once said that it was foretold by being written in the stars, a million miles away… hang on, stars are a lot farther than a million miles away! Weird.

AL Champion Detroit Tigers (Verlander)
@
NL Champion San Francisco Giants (Zito)

8 PM (more or less), FOX.

Verlander at 70 pitches through three innings. And he's given up four runs, of course.

Not what they were expecting.

Line drive hits pitching rubber, ricochets back to catcher who tags runner that broke from third, then throws to first for the double play. [ ]

I'm sure the Giants luck will run out one of these days, but this is just weird beyond belief. I've never seen anything like it.

Certainly true, but as Branch Rickey put it, "luck is the residue of design." The clutch hits by Scutaro and Sandoval weren't luck, and the heads-up play by Posey wasn't luck.
   204. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: October 24, 2012 at 09:30 PM (#4282223)
So, the Giants continue to have luck playing snooker, I take it?

yes, they will win 14:7 !

Routine play at third hit the bag, Pagan on. Scutaro singles and Panda hits his second HR of the night.

In other words, routine.

"Belt facing Verlander for the first time tonight?" A whole lot of Giants have been batting out of order, then.

Edit: Probably meant that tonight is the first time Belt has faced Verlander in his career, which makes more sense.

They make that double play all day long if he runs, but yeah, he should run. Listening to McCarver go on about it though is right up to his annoying par though.

A quick tracing (unfortunately) confirms McCarver's memory about Gibson, whose first inning was definitely his worst inning. By a fair amount.

He's not getting that Tom Glavine stroke zone, either.

Barry Manilow?! Maybe this will be the end of McCarver on FOX.

OTOH, Bobby Valentine is available. Be careful what you wish for.

I love how, thanks to LookoutLanding, people see this and immediately know it refers to one of Raul Ibanez's greatest hits.
   251. Cooper Nielson Posted: October 24, 2012 at 09:48 PM (#4282275)
So I'd say Scutaro had a bit of an advantage over Cepeda, McCovey and Mays, who never even played in 11 games in a single postseason.

Oh, you and your "facts."

Heh. It's not like the McCovey-era Giants were even frequent participants in the postseason.

Mays: 21 postseason games with Giants (4 years)
McCovey: 8 postseason games with Giants (2 years)
Cepeda: 5 postseason games with Giants (1 year)

And Mays, as most fans and professional color commentators know, did not perform well in the postseason (.247/.323/.337 line over 99 career PA).

Barry Zito is at 64 pitches through five complete innings in the World Series. Justin Verlander was taken out for a pinch-hitter.

Just gonna let that one sink in for awhile.
   260. Jose Is The Most Absurd Thing on the Site Posted: October 24, 2012 at 09:53 PM (#4282286)

So, assuming Zito holds on to this game and the Giants go on to win the series - do the past two starts justify the whole contract for Giants fans or no?
   263. Depressoteric feels Royally blue these days Posted: October 24, 2012 at 09:54 PM (#4282289)

Fun facts:

1935: Tigers shut out 3-0 in first game of WS, win 4-2.
1945: Tigers shut out 9-0 in first game of WS, win 4-3.
1968: Tigers shut out 4-0 in first game of WS, win 4-3.

Only in 1984 did the Tigers win a WS while winning Game 1.
