The rise of teenagers (and even young adults) as drivers of pop culture (that is, with disposable income) hadn't occurred before the 1950s. Before World War II, pop music was driven by adults, probably by ages 30-50 or so.

I hate the song, but that isn't my problem with it. You just don't afford the same level of respect to some random ass song as you do the National Anthem(regardless of your opinion on the quality/agreement of the Star Spangled Banner).
