What time is the first pitch? I really don't want to watch MLB celebrate thirty veterans.

I've read that "air time" is 7:30 but "game time" is 8, of course, you never know how long the public relations things will take and whether the Mets will trot out Tom Seaver or something for a 5 minute lap around the field via golf cart.

If you find a solid reference, let the thread know. I did a nose around yesterday and the closest I got is that MLB and FOX intentionally do not specify a first pitch time. (They want you to watch the WHOLE thing.)

So timing-wise I would venture to say:
7:30 broadcast begins
:36 Joe & Tim wrap up
:39 Rosters, coaches, and managers are introduced
:54 Starting lineups are introduced
:59 tribute video to those serving in the U.S. Armed Forces, a group we often forget to give tribute to
8:04 tribute video to New York baseball legend Jackie Robinson
:10 a few short words from Tom Seaver
:13 National Anthem (Canada)
:16 National Anthem (U.S.)
:26 Ceremonial first pitches
:31 Players take field
:33 First pitch

I believe you are forgetting the part where they get some contest winner to try and throw a ball through a hole for a million dollars, a surprise tribute to Mariano Rivera and Ken Rosenthal (probably) having a taped interview with Matt Harvey and/or David Wright.
   12. Greg Franklin Posted: July 16, 2013 at 02:22 PM (#4495894)
Oooh, I would have included them, but guessed that FOX would pre-tape them and reserve the clips for a slow moment during the 3rd or 4th inning. Or 5th. Or 6th.

If the Rivera tribute includes a rocking chair, hearing aid, cane, etc. that would be an item for your checkbox!
   13. Tom Nawrocki Posted: July 16, 2013 at 02:22 PM (#4495896)
I guarantee you, Fox and MLB know exactly when that first pitch is going to take place.

Of course they do. It's the not sharing that information with the public that is the problem.
   15. Gamingboy Posted: July 16, 2013 at 03:32 PM (#4495980)
BTW, I'm all for honoring and remembering people, but there's a point where they hit overload, and it was roughly when they started to try to have some sort of honor every single year, whether it be teachers, volunteers, the military, whatever. In fact, I think it might all go back to the All-Century Team... I think that was the first "big pre-game ceremony thing". After that, they keep trying to recreate the images of the All-Stars surrounding whatever group-of-the-year it is.

I see what you did there.

What did they do last year? That should be a good guide as it is the most recent* and was handled by the same outfits.

*therefore it most closely adheres to current policies on length of commercial breaks and pre-game festivities.

I think last year they did something with volunteers or charity-people or something like that. Can't remember when exactly it started.
   19. boteman Posted: July 16, 2013 at 04:50 PM (#4496112)
Is there an archive of it, like with the regular championship games? If you really wanted to predict accurately you could take one for the team and watch it/fast-forward through it. (Note here that I said "you" and not "I".)
   20. Gamingboy Posted: July 16, 2013 at 04:54 PM (#4496114)
Maybe it'd be on the youtube channel... but I'm not looking.
   21. Gamingboy Posted: July 16, 2013 at 06:02 PM (#4496169)
Few more checklist items I thought up:

Mark Melancon had to drive to NYC because he was chosen so late [ ]
Flashback to Beltran as a Met [ ]
Grant Balfour is mentioned to be Australian [ ]
Someone visits the booth [ ]

Still taking suggestions.

Not sure if it can truly be called an American version of Whose Line if Drew Carey isn't involved.
   25. Biff, highly-regarded young guy Posted: July 16, 2013 at 06:56 PM (#4496221)
Eh, Drew's only real contribution to the show was to be made fun of.

I quibble with the contention that any TV event is more important that Deadliest Catch, but you make a good point.
   28. jobu Posted: July 16, 2013 at 07:14 PM (#4496232)

Yoenis Cespedes probably won the bat flip derby, too.

Pretty sweet if you are into this kind of thing. As a Cespedes jersey owner and A's fan, I am.
   29. Gamingboy Posted: July 16, 2013 at 07:18 PM (#4496237)
Given the lack of Ichiro, I wonder if Grant Balfour will give a obscenity-filled speech to rally the AL to their first victory in three years.
   30. Bourbon Samurai Posted: July 16, 2013 at 07:31 PM (#4496243)
I dig the SNL opening...except for the Joe Buck part.
   31. Bourbon Samurai Posted: July 16, 2013 at 07:34 PM (#4496247)
28- fantastic. Love it.

Also, I've heard you no help with curveball. Care to comment?
   32. jobu Posted: July 16, 2013 at 07:39 PM (#4496249)
Well, as you saw, Yoenis hit the straight ball very much.
   33. Gamingboy Posted: July 16, 2013 at 07:39 PM (#4496250)
How did we forget "random Kevin James segment" in the rundown of the schedule of events before first pitch?
   34. Gamingboy Posted: July 16, 2013 at 07:44 PM (#4496253)
First pitch, per Troy Renck on twitter, is set to be 8:15.

SLightly off topic but I need some wisdom here. Just took the family to PNC Park on Sunday to see the Mets defeat the Pirates. My 10 year old son has decided that he is now a Pirates fan. Is there a recommended blog that he can follow to learn more about the team? Any help is greatly appreciated!
   36. Bourbon Samurai Posted: July 16, 2013 at 07:45 PM (#4496256)
"I must be a masochistic, Joe Buck!"

(together)

"Ha ha ha!"

Moments like that are why we watch the all star game, folks.
   37. Bourbon Samurai Posted: July 16, 2013 at 07:47 PM (#4496259)

As Harvey's Ballwangers will tell you, I've been living under a rock. But why is there a DH at this NL ballpark? I thought this time it counts?

Whoa, 3 Royals all stars?
   41. Bourbon Samurai Posted: July 16, 2013 at 07:50 PM (#4496266)
Some minor boos for Bartolo.

King Felix's beard looks like pixelated pubes.
   42. Gamingboy Posted: July 16, 2013 at 07:50 PM (#4496267)
Mariano Rivera got a big applause, of course.

but I am getting testy in my years...............

It seems to me that the Mets fans don't boo the Nationals nearly as much. Probably lack of history.

I assume Rivera is just going to pitch the 8th or something if the AL is losing or the game is too close? It would be funny if they held him back for the 9th and he never gets in.
   65. Joey B. Posted: July 16, 2013 at 08:13 PM (#4496297)

I know the feeling

Oh come on! For years there's rumors of Ichiro doing amazingly profane pre-game speeches, and it's never (to my knowledge) recorded on tape. And now's when they decide to show it?

It might not be good, but I'd think any time you might consider pulling a player from a regular season game, you instantly and without much thought, pull him from the ASG.
   90. Gamingboy Posted: July 16, 2013 at 08:26 PM (#4496326)
Well, that'll get the Subway Series rivalry revving up again.
   91. JJ1986 Posted: July 16, 2013 at 08:27 PM (#4496327)
Davis must be the only player who gets to hit in a better spot in the ASG than on his own team.

geez, that pitch wasn't close

did the commish declare that against lefties the strike zone gets extended 4" off the plate?

seen a lot of those 'strike' calls this season

or so it seems
