2013 Free Agent Prediction Contest

We should have one of these things, right? The signings will start today-ish. Winner gets… to be called the winner of the contest!

Since I’m making up the contest, these are the rules. (1) Just pick the team, not the contract. (2) Only 20 players, my eyes usually glaze over when the list gets longer. (3) More points for choosing the destination of elite and sub-elite free agents. (4) Elite and sub-elite have been defined according to my whims. The names below the jump…

I was mostly doing it to try to come up with a Wild Card prediction; didn't think anyone else would make it. There have been a few news blurbs about Andre Ethier possibly being traded, and maybe a team like Toronto or Seattle who has trouble getting free agents bites on him.

I don't get all the SP predictions for the White Sox. After resigning Peavy and keeping Floyd, they have 6 SPs. I guess there's a chance they trade one, but not because they sign someone like Lohse or Haren.

Speaking for myself, I don't think the White Sox go after free agent starters in any meaningful way, but my prediction involves Haren's value being depressed by injury concerns, and the organization deciding eventually to pay a premium over that undervalue believing they can make him right. Then if it works out they have terrific pitching depth, or can trade somebody for a prospect or something.

-spankz alone gets the 5 points for calling Hamilton to the Angels, but he's still stuck in a mass of folks with 6.
-only jack the seal clubber's joke ballot called Youkilis to the Yankees
-eddieot is the only poster to correctly predict Dempster to the Sox

Nick Swisher's signing was the first to entirely stump the collective brain of the prediction contest. No one had him going to Cleveland. We're down now to Bourn, Lohse, Soriano, and LaRoche.

ohboyjjf was the only poster to correctly pick Jackson to the Cubs, and with that point he joins the loosely defined lead pack.
