2016 New York City Softball Game

Looks like it will be August 20th this year.

EDIT by villageidiom:
Per post 116 the game will be 11 am to 2 pm in North Meadow Field #4.

The field is just barely on the west half of the meadow, with home plate sitting down the LF line of field 3.  If you come out the north side of the rec center it’s the field straight ahead of you. We were on field 11 two years ago, if that helps to narrow it down. Last year we were 17 blocks south of here, so don’t even bother using that as a landmark. Here’s a map of the north meadow ballfields.

Subway: A, B, or C to 96 St. Walk up to 97th and enter the park. Proceed east and figure it out from there, who am I, your Ma?

Doubly unfortunately, I remember neither where these places were, nor what they were called. But this is New York, there are probably others like them to be found.

I think we ended up here last year - The Gin Mill 442 Amsterdam Ave, New York, NY 10024 - but not sure...I remember going to one place, it being crowded and going to another on the same block - but I forget if Gin Mill is where we started, or ended up...pretty sure it was one of the two though.

That sounds familiar cat. And even if it's not, with a name like that it's hard to go wrong.
   206. Howie Menckel Posted: July 11, 2016 at 05:05 PM (#5263067)
We all sat and ordered food. Which we ate while Howie regaled us with war stories from his years in the trenches

I forgot to do my Trump material last year. Now, it would be like having had a relationship with a yeti and not talking about it.
   207. Never Give an Inge (Dave) Posted: July 11, 2016 at 06:26 PM (#5263114)

Yes, pretty sure we tried Jake's Dilemma and ended up at The Gin Mill, or vice versa, last year. Either one is a perfectly cromulent option.
   208. Never Give an Inge (Dave) Posted: July 11, 2016 at 06:28 PM (#5263116)
Jake's is a block away from the Gin Mill, they are both right around 81st and Amsterdam.
   209. thetailor (Brian) Posted: July 13, 2016 at 12:15 PM (#5264372)
I am glad to head up the efforts to score the game! I'll just need a person or two to help scoring for their team when we are in the field.

> Doubly unfortunately, I remember neither where these places were, nor what they were called. But this is New York, there are probably others like them to be found.

It was Gin Mill, I believe! I planned on dragging everyone there. The year before there was less of a plan and more desperate last second searching so I second those of you who want a solid plan this year.

Gents, I have bases, the same bases we've used for every one of these games. I think the bases are the best part of the event now!

The best stories are the Howie's stories about when he was the internet. It was a simpler, better time.

Injury update - 2nd consecutive year I'm on the DL with a thumb injury...should be good for game day i think, but couldnt even grip a bat by the end of the game yesterday.
   212. Hysterical & Useless Posted: July 18, 2016 at 04:31 PM (#5267040)
couldnt even grip a bat by the end of the game yesterday.

No need to use a bat. Just catch the pitch, throw it (using same hand you caught it with) and run like the wind.

Of course, when playing that variation, the fielders have the option to retire you via the old-timey "soaking" method.

   215. Howie Menckel Posted: July 26, 2016 at 01:40 PM (#5272188)

I have been cleared to play medically (turns out that having fingers that now look like a bare-knuckles boxer is just somehow painless osteoarthritis, so main setback is just that my dreams of hand-modeling as a second career are over), though I do still like the first base coach idea. My foray two years ago was my only such undertaking in more than 20 years, so rust problems remain, to be charitable.

am appreciative of positive feedback for my stories. am more reticent when I'm sort of invading an existing tradition. on the other hand, I have led and continue to lead a cartoon character life, to be honest, and Mickey Mouse is too busy in the summer to show up and The Avengers are always too busy making another sequel.

meant to tell those Trump stories last year, but now feels like it's better that I waited. there's even a video!

Glad to hear it Howie. I'm hoping we'll have enough players that we older folk can do some sort of rotation, play a couple of innings, take an inning or two off, lather rinse repeat. I know taking the 2nd game off last year left me much fresher for the post-game!
   218. Hysterical & Useless Posted: July 26, 2016 at 02:47 PM (#5272268)
Time for an update of this year's roster:

YES:
Shooty
H&U
Lassus +1 (team photog!)
vi
Zeth +1
Rickey!
Jason
Karl from NY (actually "probable")
Ray +2! Downgrade to "maybe not"
BDC
reech
catomi01
Snapper
Fatty Cow (because "should be able to" = "I'll be there!")
Scott
NattyBoh same as above for Karl from NY
Chicago Joe
thetailor (Brian)

MAYBE:

McCoy and a NON-PLAYING +1 [not this year--AGAIN!]
billyshears
blastin
Edmundo
zenbitz
Never Give an Inge (Dave)

Swoboda a "very likely" maybe
Howie (he keeps playing the "lowering expectations" game but we fully expect him to show up, even if all he does is regale us with Tales of the Newsroom BITGOD)
Dog on the Sidewalk if he doesn't "flake"
(Met Fan Charlie) Let's start a chant!: Charlie! Charlie! Charlie!

[Making Greg K more of an "unlikely but still hopeful"]
Greg K possible +1, (if they're still on speaking terms)

Anybody I've missed, or misclassified? Or other updates (positive ones, please!)?
   219. Lassus Posted: July 26, 2016 at 03:57 PM (#5272344)
The roster seems a little low, actually. People coming should invite friends.

The roster seems a little low, actually. People coming should invite friends.
And people who haven't committed should commit already.

Are you waiting on something better to come along? Don't. This will be the highlight of your summer.

Are you waiting on other plans to clear up? Don't wait, just clear them up. Make this event the one around which all other activities are planned.

Are you trying to figure out whether you can make the trip to NYC that day? Oh, come on. Chicago Joe is in Chicago. Rickey! is in Atlanta. They are making the trip. Last year they traveled to the game, as did AROM (Maryland?), AndrewJ (Philly), JE (DC), Greg (Canada), Votto (England!), and I'm sure others I'm forgetting about. Make it happen. MAKE IT HAPPEN.

But yeah, let's get some more people to go.
   222. Howie Menckel Posted: July 26, 2016 at 07:03 PM (#5272504)
I think we had 4 Toronters, and they weren't all even traveling together.

my favorite will the one who remembers I told him at last year's game that alas, I think Thor will be the best of the bunch of Mets SP phenoms.

To be fair, if I was single and had a hint of a suggestion of a date, you'd all be forgotten like three-day-old donuts.
   224. villageidiom Posted: July 26, 2016 at 09:02 PM (#5272585)
If you were single and ditched us you'd understand the true meaning of the label you gave us earlier: "singles hitters".
   225. Lassus Posted: July 26, 2016 at 09:32 PM (#5272612)
Women first, baseball second. It has always been thus, and I'm more than satisfied with the results.
   226. Greg K Posted: July 26, 2016 at 10:05 PM (#5272634)
Sadly I think I'm going to have to move to a "no". Coming in from Toronto is a-ok for me, but this time the logistics of getting to Toronto are a bit too much.
   227. Howie Menckel Posted: July 26, 2016 at 10:36 PM (#5272659)
Women first, baseball second.

the best women I ever met were on baseball road trips.
in fact Mrs Howie, I met on a baseball road trip to Wrigley.
I put baseball first and hit a grand slam.

that one also falls under the "no cover charge for Howie stories if you commit to the softball games before August 1."

and any of the Torontans who might not get there should get a gofundme effort. all of those guys rock.
   228. Chicago Joe Posted: July 27, 2016 at 03:11 AM (#5272735)
Two things:
1) there should be a travel scholarship. Put me down for a benjamin for that effort.

2) we should maybe think about booking a package at a bar-probs get a good discount on a Saturday afternoon.

I know taking the 2nd game off last year

::SOUND OF RECORD SCRATCHING::

Wait, what?? You guys play 2 (TWO) games?! Have you already secured an ambulance and EMS officer to stand by at the edge of the field??

Sadly I think I'm going to have to move to a "no". Coming in from Toronto is a-ok for me, but this time the logistics of getting to Toronto are a bit too much.

I'm probably flying to FL from the city for work on Sunday, but I don't suppose hitching a ride to Utica with Jules helps? You're only five hours away at that point!

Wait, what?? You guys play 2 (TWO) games?!

I'm sure more hits out of the infield would make it a longer contest.
   231. Greg K Posted: July 27, 2016 at 08:35 AM (#5272755)
I could probably walk home from Utica and the NY-Toronto leg of the trip would still be more workable than the Toronto-Saskatchewan part. I really do loathe air travel within Canada.

I'm sure more hits out of the infield would make it a longer contest.

It's too bad, I was going to bring an actual softball this year so you guys wouldn't have to use that wad of mush encased in knitted wool again. Death to the dead ball era!

We can do away with the clinchers, but I don't think its a stretch to assume that injuries to fielders will go up in direct proportion to the hardness of the ball.

Greg K, you will be sorely missed. One of the problems with North America is that they made the countries so damn big.

Oops, Dave just posted his retraction while I was engaged in protracted deliberations re: my response to Charlie & Greg. Dave, sorry you've come all this way just to miss the game.

At the rate we're going, we may have to skip the softball and go right to the postgame. Is 11 AM too early for beer?

There is no truth to the rumor that BTF is trying to acquire Jonathan Lucroy for this game.

Not to get too far ahead of ourselves, but Primer softball next year must be held on July 1. It must be.

I think Central Park starts accepting applications for fields in November. Shooty, are you on this?

I think I'm giving myself a SABR membership as a retirement gift.

H&U, I'm looking at an end of March retirement date. Do you have your date set yet?

No deployments on Aug. 20, so I'll be there. No running though. I can pitch a few innings, if that helps. I haven't played in 3 years so I might be Dalkowsiesque.
   247. Shooty is obsessed with the latest hoodie Posted: July 28, 2016 at 02:00 PM (#5273983)
Careful guys, that link said New York depended on the Yanks and Mets being in town. As I manage to schedule softball games for those rare weekends when neither is home, I wouldn't write anything in ink yet.

I'm going to be passing through NYC on my way from Long Beach Island back home to Connecticut, but I don't think the wife and kids will tolerate the detour at the end of vacation. Too bad, the thought of playing softball with you people is both interesting and terrifying.

   251. Hysterical & Useless Posted: July 29, 2016 at 08:33 AM (#5274411)
People! I ain't People!

Edmundo, my "official" end date is Sept 20, but I don't expect to be working more than a day or two a week in August, and likely not at all in September (we'll be in Toronto from the 6th through the 20th, for the film festival). I might see if I can get them to move my end date to the 21st, so I can come in to say good-bye (and deliver my badge and RSA token).

Dave, don't your wife and kids appreciate comedy?
   252. dave h Posted: July 29, 2016 at 10:58 AM (#5274511)
It's actually possible I could sell it as "hey let's hang out in Central Park (that's the location, right?) with the kids, and btw Dad is going to meet up with some people from the internet". I doubt we'll actually make it to the city until later in the day though; we're checking out of a beach house on LBI sometime that morning, and traveling with a 2-month old isn't usually too quick.
   253. villageidiom Posted: August 01, 2016 at 09:35 AM (#5276092)
It's August. The game is in August. We need more players!

I'm dropping non-playing folks from the list. I'm not tracking fan attendance, though spectators are welcome and appreciated. "Probable" and "very likely" are moving to "YES" status because it's August, and it's time to get off the fence.

My wife agreed with this idea in principle, but checkout from LBI is at 11 and it's a 2 hour drive without stops. You all are figuring to be done by 2? If we somehow get going early I'll show, but I am at best a game-day decision.

I will do my best to avoid such conflicts next year; you all have me somewhat convinced that this is fun.
   265. Edmundo got dem ol' Kozma blues again mama Posted: August 04, 2016 at 02:12 PM (#5278909)
dave h, decision should be easy. Your loving wife drops you off the night before, you sleep on a park bench. She can check out at 11 on Saturday, meet us at the field, and be your designated driver!

Love LBI. We have been staying in Beach Haven every year, keeping within walking distance of Uncle Will's Pancake House. We always have a lunch or two at the Holiday Snack Bar each visit as well.
   266. dave h Posted: August 04, 2016 at 03:39 PM (#5278972)
I think to make that plan work, I'd have to hitchhike to the train station and make my way from there. And go back in time and not have 3 kids, which may be a small price to pay for BTF softball but which is logistically difficult at this point.

We're actually staying in Beach Haven - I'll check those places out for sure. We've been once before but we usually make the trek down to the NC Outer Banks which I love. This year the baby arrival necessitated a peak summer trip.

1. Bushwick was a neighborhood that until recently you assiduously avoided. 2. Even if it hadn't been way-awful, it's way, way out of the way for anyone not living on or very near the L, J, and M lines.
   274. Lassus Posted: August 12, 2016 at 12:53 PM (#5283417)
I can only assume by August 20th the heat will be at Mad Max level.

Hey, is anybody (or antbody) staying in Brooklyn?
Looks like I get in Thursday afternoon and will be staying on the border (?) of Bushwick and Bed-Stuy.

Are you doing Air BNB by any chance?

The forecast is for partly cloudy and mid-80's. I hope we're getting through our heat wave this weekend.

As of now, the forecast suggests sticky conditions, but little chance of rain.

Which sounds to me an awful lot like 87 and humid. Everyone pre-program your phones for one-touch 911.

RDP just asked me to share the Sad! news that he will be out of town on the 20th.

August in New York. Don't count on any miracles.

Considering North Texas is getting a "cold front" this weekend that is expected to drop temperatures into the 90s, I am quite looking forward to 87 and humid.

I will be flying in from San Antonio the prior evening, assuming the plane doesn't melt.

I played last night on Long Island...best way to describe the heat and humidity is to say that I hope the jersey I wore will have dried out by the time we play on the 20th. Had thunderstorms move through right after the game, but the temp has only gone up since then....5 games scheduled for Sunday should be fun.

This is the week. This. Is. The. Week.

EQUIPMENT ALERT

Bats: catomi01 had volunteered to bring a couple of bats. Anyone else?

Bases: no volunteers yet.

Balls: catomi01 had said he'd pick up 3-4 12" clinchers. Anyone else?
   288. Lassus Posted: August 15, 2016 at 08:39 AM (#5284411)
I can't be bothered to read back, but I thought Shooty had said he'd bring bases? No?

Ray often brought a couple of bats, so unless someone else steps up we may end up a little short.

I don't need a lefty glove since I don't plan to play the field.
appear to be growing more bone in the joints in my hand (long story/osteoarthritis), so gametime decision on batting. doesn't bother me generally, but not sure on bat swinging.

Can't believe the game is almost here. The current forecast is for 87 and thunderstorms. I'm sure that forecast will change twice a day, though. We've had good luck with weather every year of the game so I'm not worried. Our god is kind and wants us to have this one day of exercise a year.
   292. catomi01 Posted: August 15, 2016 at 11:05 AM (#5284510)
Bat's - I'll have at least 4 - and I'll bring a variety of sizes - got a mix of 26 and 27 oz bats, plus 1 24 oz I use for modified and 1 30 oz.

Balls - I'll have the clinchers covered - have a dozen new ones ready to go.

Suggest if anyone else has a ball or two lying around, bring them just so we have so extras to throw around warming up.

I'll also have a couple of extra gloves if anyone is in need - right hand throw only though.
   293. Edmundo got dem ol' Kozma blues again mama Posted: August 15, 2016 at 11:15 AM (#5284514)
catomi01, if I pitch some, I'll could use a glove, thanks. Mine's in storage until we move into our new house.

I have bases.

It's always nice when evidence mounts that I am not quite as stupid as I appear.

The current forecast is for 87 and thunderstorms.

We should pledge to play in the rain at least one inning.
   295. catomi01 Posted: August 15, 2016 at 01:04 PM (#5284588)
Edmundo - I will be sure to bring an extra.
