2016 New York City Softball Game

Looks like it will be August 20th this year.

EDIT by villageidiom:
Per post 116 the game will be 11 am to 2 pm in North Meadow Field #4.

The field is just barely on the west half of the meadow, with home plate sitting down the LF line of field 3.  If you come out the north side of the rec center it’s the field straight ahead of you. We were on field 11 two years ago, if that helps to narrow it down. Last year we were 17 blocks south of here, so don’t even bother using that as a landmark. Here’s a map of the north meadow ballfields.

Subway: A, B, or C to 96 St. Walk up to 97th and enter the park. Proceed east and figure it out from there, who am I, your Ma?

Cool pictures, thanks for taking them!

I am sorry that the weather prevented me from scoring the game -- we actually had about two innings of scoring that were fairly accurate that we could have pieced together the game with if it had continued.

All I know is that the first game was competitive, we were tied until Jason hit a grand slam (his second) in the top of the seventh. You guys won 16-12 as we went hitless in the bottom seventh.

In the second game, it was 2-1 you guys entering the top of the fifth when the offensive barrage began. We sent at least 13 batters to the plate that inning (I batted third and twelfth). I managed to somehow hit a double that didn't score Karl from second :) It ended up at least 11-2, maybe worse.

And if it wasn't for all the lolligagging on home team's end, that game could have been official!

Jason actually took the shot of BDC with my camera, since I was in the field at the time. He's the MVP even of photography.

I don't know who's in #5, but yeah it's not my team since I'm not playing 2B.

My first ever double post!

#5 was snapper and I. I did call him off, since the play was behind him ;).

In re: the second game, suffice it to say there was limited enthusiasm when the rain really started to soak us. Though Jason was McGrawing it.

Hey- Neat-O shots- And one of me hitting!

There was limited enthusiasm from both teams for the 1st half of the rain storm...once we put up 11-12 runs, there was plenty of enthusiasm - most of it was just concentrated squarely on one team.

Also, as has yet to be mentioned, the park service came by and told us to call it a day (probably due to thunder in the area). After which, it immediately cleared up as we were leaving the park.
   408. Bote Man Posted: August 22, 2016 at 01:30 PM (#5288206)
I have no idea who scored how much. I'm not even sure who was on which team. I just came to meet everyone, get some exercise, and drink beer. Accomplished all three!!

But dear gawd does my back ache today! It took 2 days, not 1, to set in.

Sure, but if I let you take it, we wouldn't have gotten the DP ;-)

We are going to have to put names/handles to faces in that group picture so that I can call out the guy who said I was a wimp for stretching before the game. I stretched and I still think I did a little something to my hip, and I was one of the youngest guys there!
   411. Rickey! No. You move. Posted: August 22, 2016 at 02:12 PM (#5288232)
Anybody notice that Snappy is looking like a fuller-body model of Jesse Eisenberg these days?
   412. Karl from NY Posted: August 22, 2016 at 02:31 PM (#5288251)
Problem is you weren't stretching *before* the game, you were stretching while the 2nd inning was already well underway. Just get in the game, do your stretching between pitches or batters...
   413. ERROR---Jolly Old St. Nick Posted: August 22, 2016 at 02:44 PM (#5288257)
I don't know who it is, but that picture (#8) of a guy in a Mets T-shirt walking away with his head hung low looks as if he'd just been chosen as a symbol for the Mets' season.

And that dirt field looks like the Griffith Stadium outfield on Opening Day, 1937. Doesn't Central Park have any diamonds with grass infields?

Wow, you're not far off.

Also, who's Jesse Eisenberg?

Edmundo is incorrectly tagged as Brian, who is pictured 2 heads to the right in the photo on The Renegade's FB page.

Thanks for the photos Karl. I try to use discretion with my full name on the Internet so I'm going to stay away from Facebook, but that's me in #3 if anyone is looking to put names to backs-of-heads.

Staying away from Facebook is always a good idea.
   418. Howie Menckel Posted: August 22, 2016 at 04:38 PM (#5288350)
wait, I have to join Facebook to see the other photos?

I am the southpaw in the first photo in post 398. nothing screams failure like a batter who has been retired before he even drops his bat. on the other hand, maybe what it really proves is that I hit a ROCKET! yes, I am going with that.

Yeah, that was weird. Edmundo and Brian should be correctly ID-ed now.

Looks like it will be August 20th this year.

From this description this appears to be an annual thing. Is it always in NY, or do you consider other locations?
   422. Bote Man Posted: August 22, 2016 at 10:55 PM (#5288522)
Rumor has it that there could be one in Chicago.

That's me with my head down, Andy. I had a great time at both the game and the postgame. Thanks for putting everything together, guys!

you had to reach the Finals of our Saturday Olympics event to hear about it, though

The unasked question: After obliterating the competition the night before, did Chicago Joe outlast everyone on Saturday afternoon as well?
   426. Bote Man Posted: August 23, 2016 at 01:44 PM (#5288790)
When I left, Shooty and Chicago Joe were still in a drink-off. My skinny a$$ had a 4 hour drive looming (after a snooze) so I had to say "uncle". Those two might still be there for all I know.

This was the 4th annual in NYC. One was played in Chicago back in 2011.

All it takes for a game to happen is for someone to book a field and for enough people locally or willing to travel. Doesn't have to be limited to one game per year.
   428. Bote Man Posted: August 23, 2016 at 02:02 PM (#5288797)

Based on the barking of my lower back yesterday and today, it most certainly does!
   429. Howie Menckel Posted: August 23, 2016 at 03:01 PM (#5288836)

so JE and I left just short of the medal level, and apparently Bote Man nabbed the bronze.
if Shooty or Chicago Joe sober up at some point, perhaps one of them can remember which of them grabbed the gold (or the Sarah Jessica Parker lookalike - or both).

IIRC, we didn't leave the joint until well after 7.30pm, fairly impressive considering that we arrived mid-afternoon.

I should have stayed...right around then I think I was standing on a train platform in huntington waiting for a train that really did not want to show up

I would totally be down to play another game in September, by the way. I could definitely get a few extra guys to fill out the roster if necessary too. We also don't necessarily need permits if that's a pain -- all of the North Meadow fields were empty on Saturday.
   434. reech Posted: August 24, 2016 at 01:44 PM (#5289320)
in for another game... anytime, anywhere.
   435. Hysterical & Useless Posted: August 25, 2016 at 07:22 PM (#5290107)
I'll be in Toronto the 6th through the 20th, we're going for the Film Festival. One last visit to work on the 21st, and after that I'm free. Might be kind of late in the year, but we could give it another shot. The post-game part anyway, since Howie claims I owe the waitress money.
   436. The Yankee Clapper Posted: August 25, 2016 at 07:28 PM (#5290111)
You should play a game in DC. The South Lawn of the White House is an ideal location, hardly ever in use, especially on weekends. Surely, there is a Primate with sufficient clout to secure the required permission.
   437. Hysterical & Useless Posted: August 26, 2016 at 07:37 PM (#5290681)
Andy would probably have the most clout with the current admin, though I would think that in general that would be Jason's bailiwick.

Which was truly bizarre. In the past we've usually had to wait for the preceding schlubs to finish, and the adjacent fields were occupied as well. Though the last 2 years we've been a bit earlier in the season.
   439. Hysterical & Useless Posted: August 26, 2016 at 08:17 PM (#5290699)
The lack of photos from the game is really hurting our post total this year. Last year we got to 550 before commenting was closed, the year before over 600. Not Petco-esque I admit, but still respectable totals. But there were so many funny photos which begged for witty comments! This year, what've we got? 4 or 5 from Karl, and some indeterminate number in the wasteland of Facebook, hardly a suitable destination for our crew. Jason, can you move photos to some more civilized locale? Huh? Pretty please?

It'd also help if all the players were identified in the photos.

Well, that evil contraption known as Facebook allows tagging each face in a photo. BUT! Some of us don't care to be identified in a public forum for various reasons. So I'm doubtful that this will come to fruition.

Looks like the SABR convention is June 28-July 2, with the Mets home to the Phillies. Can't see any reason why I won't make it.

SOMEONE BOOK A FIELD FOR JULY 1 PRONTO!

(and by "a field", I mean maybe two, and see if SABR wants to use one)
