38 Pitches: Schilling: A second look at a few things

Oh and one more thing. I really loathe to even mention CHB in anything anymore, due to his irrelevance on the Boston sports scene but I suck at keeping my tongue in places like this. CHB wrote the other day (thanks to the person forwarding this as it’s the first thing I’ve read that he’s written in five months)

“Best part of Curt Schilling’s blog on the WEEI website? Schill claims, ’I don’t get edited.’ Could he be more of a diva? Here’s a clue for the Big Lug - Ernest Hemingway had an editor. And Schill needs an editor more than I need a pitching coach.”

By edited I meant content Curly, because Lord knows I sure as hell need help with anything I write. But your last statement is laughable, because I think — and correct me if I am wrong — I am doing what you do for a living right?

I am pretty sure you’ve never stepped on a mound, well a field of any kind for that matter, and competed for something that truly mattered to people not on the field? So I am comfortable saying I am a lot closer to being able to do what you do, than you are able to do what I did …

Keep spewing the vitriol chief. It seems to be the only bite your writing has any more.

can we replace Shaughnessy's column with Schilling in the Globe? He'd probably be way too forgiving to players, but he'd at least have an interesting take on things and not be using his bully pulpit to beat up on players 100% of the time. Or, y'know, making unkosher comments about non-white Sox players.

I am pretty sure you’ve never stepped on a mound, well a field of any kind for that matter, and competed for something that truly mattered to people not on the field? So I am comfortable saying I am a lot closer to being able to do what you do, than you are able to do what I did …

This is a good point coming from Schilling. With the mediocre quality of most sports writing, it probably doesn't look any better than Schilling's before the editor gets it. He probably is almost as good a writer as Shaughnessy, and as for pitching . . . (or thinking, for that matter, even though some of his ideas are as cracked as Shaughnessy's)

This is one of those columns that makes me upset Dan Shaughnessy and I will have a degree from the same College come May. As much as Schilling comes off as a tool in some of his entries, they tend to offer a lot more substantive info than CHB could ever have.

It's Shaugnessy's unfavorable nickname acronym ("curly haired boyfriend") that was awarded to him years ago.

Dan Shaughnessy, but I have no idea why he got that nickname...

Found it, at WikiGonzalez:
"CHB" was coined by Sox outfielder Carl Everett. While complaining about reporters who criticized him, he referred to "[Gordon] Edes and his curly-haired boyfriend." This was shortened to CHB by Red Sox diehards at Sons of Sam Horn, and quickly became the popular way to refer to Shaughnessy on the Internet.

I apparently haven't spent enough time at SoSH, as I always assumed that Curly Haired Boyfriend (chb) was a euphemism for Cold-Hearted Bastard.

The bigoted tone of Everett's quote just ruins the whole chb thing for me now. Merry Xmas indeed.

Jesus Christmas who died on the cross so CHB couldn't marry his boyfriend and people wouldn't work on the sabbath and so his people would lead crusades to kill nonbelievers and to ensure that no effective forms of birth control were every legal and to make sure man had dominion over the world, esp. womenfolk.

"X" as a common abbreviation for "Christ" has been around for over a millennium, being the first letter in the actual Greek word ??????? ("Cristos") from which "Christ" is derived. Not everything is an attack on you.

It's funny because he was pretty obviously making a joke, and yet still we had someone bringing up the technical Greek word from which Christ is derived and blah blah blah lighten up people. We get it, the religious folk are crazy.

No, and Schill's not even in the same ballpark. Shaughnessy's not much of a human being, but the man can write.

This is what Schilling always falls back on when challenged. I am/was a ballplayer, and you were not. So nothing you have to say counts, or is relevant. He doesn't seem to realize this is a lame form of ad hominem argument. Presumably only ex-ballplayers can write, broadcast, or analyze sports. Oh, and people who agree with Schilling of course.
