4-12-13 Omnichatter

Hello friends, discuss today’s games here. It’s a good slate, with Baltimore returning to the Bronx for the first time since the ALDS, Atlanta facing Washington for early NL East supremacy, Oakland facing Detroit, and Clayton Kershaw taking the mound against Arizona.

Adam Jones drops fly ball to center with bases loaded (on walks).

You have no idea how relieved I am that your decision to pick Denard up on your fantasy team due to my praise hasn't backfired.

Your praise certainly prompted me too research him a little. He's really a very good-to-excellent player; he's just been on a shitty team. He's still in his prime (albeit perhaps the tail end) and leading off for a potent offense. He could very well lead the league in runs.
   203. The John Wetland Memorial Death (CoB) Posted: April 12, 2013 at 09:30 PM (#4412515)
Wow.

Thanks a bunch, mr. jones ...
   204. Chip Posted: April 12, 2013 at 09:31 PM (#4412516)
Nice bubble blow by Jones. Perfectly timed to accentuate the error.

   205. Esoteric Posted: April 12, 2013 at 09:31 PM (#4412517)
BTW, CoB, isn't it spelled "John WETTELAND"? Or am I missing a joke here?
   206. DKDC Posted: April 12, 2013 at 09:31 PM (#4412518)
Jones cost them the playoff series against the Yankees with his need to non-chalant a ball. And now he does it again.

Get over yourself dude.
   207. Rickey! trades in sheep and threats Posted: April 12, 2013 at 09:32 PM (#4412519)
In what sort of shitty league is Denard Span " good-to-excellent?" Do they not make real baseball players any more?
   208. Esoteric Posted: April 12, 2013 at 09:33 PM (#4412520)

Adam Jones is still the best player on the Orioles and I miss him dearly as a Mariners fan...but that was awful.
   209. Spectral Posted: April 12, 2013 at 09:34 PM (#4412522)

I think it's called the "National League".

I do agree with you that plus-plus centerfielder with an OBP of .500 or so is unreal, albeit in a good way.
   211. Esoteric Posted: April 12, 2013 at 09:35 PM (#4412524)
Ugh. Gut-check time here for Clippard and the Nationals.
   212. Rickey! trades in sheep and threats Posted: April 12, 2013 at 09:35 PM (#4412525)
Denard Span is a poor man's Micheal Bourne at best.
   213. The John Wetland Memorial Death (CoB) Posted: April 12, 2013 at 09:36 PM (#4412526)
[205] Well, sure, *he* spells his name that way ...

Here's what you're missing ...
   214. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: April 12, 2013 at 09:36 PM (#4412527)
so we don't swing at balls down the middle and then complain when they are called strikes?

geez carlos
   215. Chip Posted: April 12, 2013 at 09:36 PM (#4412528)
Maybe Jones decided the Orioles didn't really deserve that game gifted to them by Hanrahan & the Red Sox outfield defense the other night, and the only suitable penance was to gift a game to someone else.
   216. Dock Ellis on Acid Posted: April 12, 2013 at 09:36 PM (#4412530)

Denard Span is a pretty good player. He's not by any means a superstar, but you could do a lot worse than him. He was a 5 bWAR player last year.
   219. Dock Ellis on Acid Posted: April 12, 2013 at 09:38 PM (#4412535)
Man Shelby is dealing tonight.
   220. The John Wetland Memorial Death (CoB) Posted: April 12, 2013 at 09:38 PM (#4412536)
Uh oh, JoeyJoeJoe, I'd better be seeing some ALABAMA HAMMER and right quick, too ...
   221. Esoteric Posted: April 12, 2013 at 09:38 PM (#4412537)
Basically this at-bat between Tyler Clippard and B.J. Upton will decide the Nats/Braves game.
   222. Rickey! trades in sheep and threats Posted: April 12, 2013 at 09:38 PM (#4412538)
Oh. bWAR. Let me get out the bubbly.
   223. cardsfanboy Posted: April 12, 2013 at 09:39 PM (#4412539)
Actually, Joey Belle had his moments. He did that thing where he chased those punks with his truck on Halloween, and he yelled at that chick in the dugout. He's way better than Harper.

Comments like that prove why you like scumbags like Bobby Cox and Chipper Jones, complete the trifecta and go out and buy a chad curtis to complete your trinity of evil.
   224. DKDC Posted: April 12, 2013 at 09:39 PM (#4412540)
Well I'm glad I turned the game back on to at least see the replay of Machado's homer the other night. Don't see him repeating though.
   225. Gamingboy Posted: April 12, 2013 at 09:40 PM (#4412542)
This NL East game is getting intense....
   226. The John Wetland Memorial Death (CoB) Posted: April 12, 2013 at 09:41 PM (#4412544)
Can I just say ...

I slag on MLB for many, many things ... but their commitment to their online presence and integration into the 21st century of portability is top notch.

It took me 10 minutes to a) buy a monthly MLB.tv subscription, b) set up a link with my Panasonic plasma tv and c) start watching tonight's game in HD via the internet on my tv.

That's tits on bacon awesome ...
   227. Rickey! trades in sheep and threats Posted: April 12, 2013 at 09:41 PM (#4412545)

#### me in the ear. This is just gift wrap central.
   229. Esoteric Posted: April 12, 2013 at 09:41 PM (#4412547)
Ye gods. Clippard walks a run in. Bases still loaded, two out. And now Dan Uggla is coming to bat against Drew Storen, against whom he batting a career .500.

I will keep muttering "small sample size" to myself as I pray.
   230. Dan Posted: April 12, 2013 at 09:41 PM (#4412548)
I don't think I've ever seen a team run into a triple play before.
   231. The John Wetland Memorial Death (CoB) Posted: April 12, 2013 at 09:41 PM (#4412549)
Or, you know ... A TRIPLE ####### PLAY!!!!!!!

That'll do!
   232. Spectral Posted: April 12, 2013 at 09:42 PM (#4412550)
The back end of this bullpen looks like a real weakness, at least early in the season.
   233. Dock Ellis on Acid Posted: April 12, 2013 at 09:42 PM (#4412551)
Wait what who had a triple play what team
   234. DKDC Posted: April 12, 2013 at 09:42 PM (#4412552)
Mlb should devote all the resources they are using on PEDs to figure out how the entire Orioles team placed bets on the Yankees tonight without anyone noticing.
   235. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: April 12, 2013 at 09:42 PM (#4412553)
TRIPLE PLAY!!!
   236. cardsfanboy Posted: April 12, 2013 at 09:42 PM (#4412555)
Everybody's favorite player Pete Kozma! with a hit, and advances from first to third with the sacrifice(I wonder if any of the expected run scoring matrix's include that as an option. :)
   237. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: April 12, 2013 at 09:43 PM (#4412556)
another example of yuni laziness. kozma gets to third on a sac bunt because yuni doesn't get back to third after the catcher picks up the bunt to make the play
   238. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: April 12, 2013 at 09:43 PM (#4412557)
The runners who were on base were kind of up a creek without a paddle but what the hell was Machado doing?

*EXHALE*
   240. DKDC Posted: April 12, 2013 at 09:44 PM (#4412559)
Machado is actually a pretty smart player for a 20 year old, but that was some little league #### right there.

Anyone noticed Justin Masterson pitched a shutout with 7's? ERA on the year is 0.41 in 22 inn
   244. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: April 12, 2013 at 09:47 PM (#4412564)
wow, a 4-6-5-6-5-3-4 triple play? i cannot wait to see the highlight of that.
   245. The John Wetland Memorial Death (CoB) Posted: April 12, 2013 at 09:47 PM (#4412565)
[242] Oh, believe me, I've tried it both ways, I'm confident I have them in the correct order ...
   246. Dan Posted: April 12, 2013 at 09:48 PM (#4412566)
Looks like Masterson had his sinker working in the mid 90s tonight. When he's throwing it hard with movement he's tough to hit.
   247. DKDC Posted: April 12, 2013 at 09:48 PM (#4412567)
It's a lowlight. Its a bunch of Orioles running around like idiots and it culminates with a bunch of Yankees celebrating.
   248. Dock Ellis on Acid Posted: April 12, 2013 at 09:48 PM (#4412568)
Still don't know what game the triple play happened.
   249. The John Wetland Memorial Death (CoB) Posted: April 12, 2013 at 09:48 PM (#4412569)
Wow.

The most amazing thing about that triple play is the Youkilis misplayed it BOTH times he had the ball in his hand ...
   250. Esoteric Posted: April 12, 2013 at 09:49 PM (#4412570)
Wait what who had a triple play what team
The Orioles hit/ran into one, sadly.

Thanks - can't wait to see the video.
   254. Guts Posted: April 12, 2013 at 09:54 PM (#4412574)
Shelby looks great. Super happy keeping him up as the 5th starter. Threw a lot of pitches tonight, but you can live with that.

Lohse has been stranding the runners, though. Close game, especially with the Cards' bullpen house of horrors about to enter.
   255. Rickey! trades in sheep and threats Posted: April 12, 2013 at 09:54 PM (#4412575)
Who closes for the Natbags?
   256. AJMcCringleberry Posted: April 12, 2013 at 09:55 PM (#4412576)
Who closes for the Natbags?

Soriano.
   257. DKDC Posted: April 12, 2013 at 09:55 PM (#4412577)
Damn, I haven't been able to watch many baseball games this season, and Adam Jones gypped me out of what could have been a good one.
   258. Rickey! trades in sheep and threats Posted: April 12, 2013 at 09:56 PM (#4412579)
Rafeal Soriano?
   259. AJMcCringleberry Posted: April 12, 2013 at 09:57 PM (#4412580)
Usually, I guess he has tonight off.
   260. The Yankee Clapper Posted: April 12, 2013 at 09:57 PM (#4412581)
Soriano worked 3 days in a row, so Storen is going for the 4-out save tonight.
   261. Dock Ellis on Acid Posted: April 12, 2013 at 09:57 PM (#4412582)
8 strikeouts and 1 hit for Shelby tonight.

   265. Rickey! trades in sheep and threats Posted: April 12, 2013 at 09:58 PM (#4412586)
We called up Blake DeWitt?!
   266. DKDC Posted: April 12, 2013 at 09:59 PM (#4412587)
Mariano Rivera doesn't look like he's Mariano Rivera anymore. But he got the save.
   267. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: April 12, 2013 at 09:59 PM (#4412588)
Davis should have had that, even with the poor throw from Tejada.
   268. The John Wetland Memorial Death (CoB) Posted: April 12, 2013 at 09:59 PM (#4412589)
This 5-2 game?

Close game, especially with the Cards' bullpen house of horrors about to enter.

I still say that it's going to be one of our strengths over the course of the season. Provided we keep scrabble and Salas out of any close games.

Buck Showalter ought to horsewhip the Orioles baserunners for that. Unbelievable.
   273. Guts Posted: April 12, 2013 at 10:03 PM (#4412594)
Shelby threw 113 pitches. 87 strikes, 26 balls. Aoki, leading off the first, got a hit, and whichever Alex Gonzalez the Brewers have was HBP. Those were the only baserunners. 8Ks. I'll take it.
   274. cardsfanboy Posted: April 12, 2013 at 10:04 PM (#4412595)
87 strikes, 26 balls.

That is unreal. It's a video game performance in some respects.
   275. Esoteric Posted: April 12, 2013 at 10:04 PM (#4412596)
Oh great. Two out, bottom of the 9th, bases loaded...JUSTIN UPTON COMING TO BAT.

What could possibly go wrong??
   276. Gamingboy Posted: April 12, 2013 at 10:04 PM (#4412597)
Wait, so Adam Jones screwed up in the Yankee Stadium outfield again AND they hit into a triple play.

ANNNNNGGGGGEEELLLLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSSSSSSSSS!

Shelby looks great, but that pitch count is starting to worry me this early in the season.

Yeah, I though he'd be done after 6, but he wasn't laboring or losing command, so hopefully it didn't strain him.

I wish I had your optimism about the bullpen.
   278. DKDC Posted: April 12, 2013 at 10:05 PM (#4412599)
I'm taking my daughter to her first ever ball game tomorrow. I hope the Orioles have short memories and play a little less dumb for her. Or they should at least wait to suck until after I'm dragged out of there in the 6th inning.

I don't think I've ever seen a team run into a triple play before.

Mariners in 2006 ran into one without hitting the ball. Runners on first and third, no outs; strikeout looking, runner on first gets thrown out trying to steal second, runner on third breaks for home and gets caught on the return throw.

   288. Guts Posted: April 12, 2013 at 10:09 PM (#4412613)
