4-12-13 Omnichatter

Hello friends, discuss today’s games here. It’s a good slate, with Baltimore returning to the Bronx for the first time since the ALDS, Atlanta facing Washington for early NL East supremacy, Oakland facing Detroit, and Clayton Kershaw taking the mound against Arizona.

A's and Tigers are playing a crisp, tense game of professional base ball.

Amazing GF, to Josh Reddick: "You need to cut your ####### hair, and shave."

I did not realize prince fielder had grown that fat.

Are the Angels in the early lead for most disappointing team so far?

Their pitching is just not very good, and have many question marks (except for Weaver, who is currently injured). The rest:

Tommy Hanson - Shoulder is meat. His numbers were very good in the past, and he's still under control thru 2014(?), but if there was any confidence his shoulder would hold up, then why did the Braves only get a middle reliever for him?

CJ Wilson - Merely league-average last year. ERA+ of 134 and 150 the two years before, but the former closer could be rapidly declining as a starter. Kinda smells like Derek Lowe to me - only Lowe was 35 when he started being below average, Wilson is 32.

Jason Vargas - Does ERA+ account for defense? If not, then he needed Seattle's defense to even approach league-average for 3 seasons there.

Joe Blanton - He is Joe Blanton.

Josh Reddick is an amazing fielder. Whew.
   406. Los Angeles El Hombre of Anaheim Posted: April 13, 2013 at 12:57 AM (#4412803)
I've said this before, and I'll say it again: The Angels are going to regret leaving Kyle Loshe on the market. Joe Blanton? REALLY?

"I did not realize prince fielder had grown that fat."

I saw Prince in person not three days ago. He looked about 100 lbs less than he looks in uniform. There is some weird confluence between Prince's body shape and the cut of uniform he wears. He's heavy, but he's not at all what he looks like in uniform.
   408. Dan Posted: April 13, 2013 at 01:03 AM (#4412809)
Maybe he just has a good tailor who makes him look slim in his street clothes.
   409. ASmitty Posted: April 13, 2013 at 01:05 AM (#4412811)
Haha, he was wering an underarmour shirt. An unusual choice, but I feel like I got a good baseline.
   410. puck Posted: April 13, 2013 at 01:05 AM (#4412814)
Rockies report: Wilton Lopez still broken, Dexter Fowler must be a biogenesis client. (2 HR tonight for 6 on the year.)
   411. Dan Posted: April 13, 2013 at 01:07 AM (#4412818)
This game has the feel of a long extra inning affair to me.

(Tigers-A's)
   412. flournoy Posted: April 13, 2013 at 01:10 AM (#4412821)
What sucks about the Braves/Nationals is that one of them will probably have to play in that terrible, horrible, no good, very bad one-game playoff.

Look on the bright side. If it's the Nationals who wind up playing in the one game payoff, that's a good thing! Especially if they lose.
   413. Dan Posted: April 13, 2013 at 01:14 AM (#4412822)
Cespedes in CF over Reddick? I think I'd rather take my chances on a Cespedes - Reddick - Moss alignment than the one the A's appear to be using with Crisp out.

He wears a pretty baggy uniform. Baggy clothes do not do large men many favors. He probably prefers the freedom of movement his baggy uniform offer when he's playing a sport, but If you saw him sans uniform, I bet he was more sharply dressed.
   415. Shooty Survived the Shutdown of '14! Posted: April 13, 2013 at 01:23 AM (#4412827)
I think Melvin wants to keep Reddick's arm in right.

I am so sleepy. Finish this now Oakland!
   416. Dock Ellis on Acid Posted: April 13, 2013 at 01:25 AM (#4412828)
Is it me or is Albert Pujols no longer all that menacing at the plate?
   417. ASmitty Posted: April 13, 2013 at 01:30 AM (#4412830)
I actually never found Pujols menacing, despite his historic talent. He din't give me THE FEAR.

Though I concede since heading to the Angels he's seemed even more human.
   418. ASmitty Posted: April 13, 2013 at 01:31 AM (#4412831)
Double post.
   419. Los Angeles El Hombre of Anaheim Posted: April 13, 2013 at 01:32 AM (#4412833)
Shut out by the Astros. I just... cannot.. #######... take this season. It's only ####### APRIL, and this season already feels five hundred games long.
   420. Shooty Survived the Shutdown of '14! Posted: April 13, 2013 at 01:38 AM (#4412836)
So, so sleepy. For the love of Jobu, let's get this walkoff and call it a night.
   421. Dan Posted: April 13, 2013 at 01:43 AM (#4412839)
Apparently Cespedes is coming out of the game too. Should be interesting to see what the A's do for a defensive alignment if the game goes another inning. Maybe Reddick to CF, Freiman to RF, and Jaso or Norris at 1B (with the other at C)? Or do they sacrifice the DH and put Chris Young in CF? They have no more position players on the bench, so the latter seems unlikely.
   422. Rob_Wood Posted: April 13, 2013 at 01:43 AM (#4412840)
shooty, you know you just jinxed it to be a 17 inning game, right?
   423. Shooty Survived the Shutdown of '14! Posted: April 13, 2013 at 01:44 AM (#4412841)
I won't make it 17 innings.
   424. ASmitty Posted: April 13, 2013 at 01:45 AM (#4412842)
I hope Shooty sacrificed a live chicken/got a bucket of KFC.
   425. Dan Posted: April 13, 2013 at 01:46 AM (#4412844)
Downs can't find the plate at all.
   426. Dock Ellis on Acid Posted: April 13, 2013 at 01:47 AM (#4412845)
Does Josh Reddick ever wash his hair? It looks like there are thick dirty dreads underneath his helmet.
   427. ASmitty Posted: April 13, 2013 at 01:52 AM (#4412847)
A's fans with the "Detroit sucks" chant. Do any other cities get that? It seems specific to Detroit.
   428. Shooty Survived the Shutdown of '14! Posted: April 13, 2013 at 01:54 AM (#4412848)
############. We're not going to win this with Derek Norris in centerfield. And the cats will be waking me up in 4 hours for breakfast. Grrr. #### you Jobu.
   429. Dan Posted: April 13, 2013 at 01:55 AM (#4412850)
Chris Young into the field, pitcher batting 4th.
   430. Shooty Survived the Shutdown of '14! Posted: April 13, 2013 at 01:55 AM (#4412851)
Melvin does the smart thing and puts Chris Young in CF. No more DH, though.
   431. Dan Posted: April 13, 2013 at 01:57 AM (#4412852)
Wouldn't it have made more sense to put Norris at C and put the pitcher at 6th in the order? You'd get to delay the pitcher batting for 2 extra PA.
   432. Shooty Survived the Shutdown of '14! Posted: April 13, 2013 at 01:59 AM (#4412853)

Maybe, but Leyland has more rightys than leftys in the pen right now so he probably wants to keep Jaso in the game. It's been an interesting strategic battle between Melvin and Leyland tonight.
   433. Dan Posted: April 13, 2013 at 01:59 AM (#4412854)
Tuiasasopo swings at ball 4 twice. No I don't care if I spelt it right.
   434. Dan Posted: April 13, 2013 at 02:01 AM (#4412855)
Wowwww that was incredibly close to a homer. A foot to the left or 2 feet higher and that's a homer.
   435. ASmitty Posted: April 13, 2013 at 02:01 AM (#4412856)
Juuuuuuuust short of out.
   436. Shooty Survived the Shutdown of '14! Posted: April 13, 2013 at 02:01 AM (#4412857)
Jeez. About 3 inches from a HR. Thank you out of town scoreboard.
   437. ASmitty Posted: April 13, 2013 at 02:03 AM (#4412858)
The A's PA guy is very serious about pitching changes and pinch hitters.
   438. ASmitty Posted: April 13, 2013 at 02:04 AM (#4412859)
Wow, looking at the SUPER slo-mo on that near-HR. GREAT call by the umpire.
   439. Dan Posted: April 13, 2013 at 02:09 AM (#4412860)
Did the Angels game really end with Hamilton being doubled off of first base on a foul pop? Because that's the most inexcusable thing I've ever heard of.
   440. Shooty Survived the Shutdown of '14! Posted: April 13, 2013 at 02:12 AM (#4412861)
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good night!
   441. Dan Posted: April 13, 2013 at 02:12 AM (#4412862)
Holy crap. I didn't think that had a shot of going out.
   442. Rob_Wood Posted: April 13, 2013 at 02:12 AM (#4412863)
gn shooty
   443. ASmitty Posted: April 13, 2013 at 02:13 AM (#4412864)
Villareal's ERA has to be really, really, big.
   444. Dan Posted: April 13, 2013 at 02:13 AM (#4412865)
How in the world did that stay fair and go that far? It was a pitch up and on the inside corner at 94 MPH, and he pushed it out to RF. That's absurd.
   445. Dan Posted: April 13, 2013 at 02:14 AM (#4412866)

43.20

We will see YOU, tomorrow afternon!
   447. ASmitty Posted: April 13, 2013 at 02:16 AM (#4412868)
43.20? Yowza. And I agree with Dan, not an awful pitch. Not sure how that stayed fair.
