4-20-2013 OMNICHATTER

Submitting this a bit early… but, anyway, it’s Saturday. It’ll be the first game at Fenway since the Marathon and Friday’s drama, and the day will also see a LAD-BAL doubleheader, Scott Kazmir’s return, and Posey catching Lincecum.

Word is the Red Sox will wear home jerseys with BOSTON on the front this afternoon at Fenway.

ESPN and MLB Network will be covering pregame.

Classy. Look nice and old-timey. Maybe they should wear those every year on Patriots' Day from now on.

Those are brilliant. I'd love to have one.

Also, *no one* is broadcasting today's RS game?? I'm blocked on MLB.tv because of area issues

ESPN is doing the pregame and MLB Net has pregame and the game itself.
   12. Dale Sams Posted: April 20, 2013 at 01:07 PM (#4420333)
Thanks gaming, they had The Scout listed so I didn't bother looking. There's still a small chance Ill be kicked to another game because of area issues.
   13. Dale Sams Posted: April 20, 2013 at 01:10 PM (#4420334)
Am I a horrible person for fearing that today's game would be a jingoistic mess rather than the respectful air it is?

Guess I spoke too soon, apparently Superman is doing the announcing now.
   14. Gamingboy Posted: April 20, 2013 at 01:14 PM (#4420338)
It is a fine line, Dale, and I think Boston is walking it beautifully.
   15. Dale Sams Posted: April 20, 2013 at 01:18 PM (#4420340)
I thought that the Buckley stuff was amazing. A movie about this week should end right on that, and it would bring down the house. It's the VOICE of the guy speaking now...I could turn the treble on my TV to 11 and this guys "1984" voice would still shake my walls.

I'm going to throw this final word out here regarding today's ceremony and the past week:

I'm very torn because part of me wants to cry, and part of me can't stop rolling my eyes because Boston is acting like it defeated the ####### Axis instead of two wannabe anarchists cookbook IDIOTS. I'm done (hopefully). Thanks for putting up with me BBTF and letting me be "that guy".
   21. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: April 20, 2013 at 01:38 PM (#4420352)
I'm usually pretty cynical too Dale but this stuff got me choked up. Ortiz' f-bomb was funny but "this our ####### city and no one is going to take it." sums up how a lot of people here feel. It's been a rough week.
   22. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: April 20, 2013 at 01:39 PM (#4420355)
Well, that was emotional.

Am I a horrible person for fearing that today's game would be a jingoistic mess rather than the respectful air it is?

No. There was a real chance it could be a ###########.

I'm very torn because part of me wants to cry, and part of me can't stop rolling my eyes because Boston is acting like it defeated the ####### Axis instead of two wannabe anarchists cookbook IDIOTS.

Yeah, Bostonians were already arrogant and often acted aggrieved. Now we actually ARE aggrieved and can feel justifiably proud in how our local institutions reacted to a really horrible attack. In a few months we'll be back to our regular elitist attitudes, I don't begrudge the heightened levels right now at all, heck I'm feeling damned proud of this city right now.
   23. frannyzoo Posted: April 20, 2013 at 01:42 PM (#4420359)
Interesting that FOX didn't get the Boston game today. I know logistics would have been very difficult, but... Not that I'm complaining, seeing this on NESN feed is so, so much nicer than it would have been on FOX.
   24. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: April 20, 2013 at 01:43 PM (#4420360)
I think one of the Deadspin guys said this, but at it's worst sports are a distraction. At it's best, it's also a distraction. I'm really grateful to be distracted right now.

I've intentionally avoided any coverage other than triple sourced news crawls on the internet, specifically to avoid kicking in my base, natural, fundamentally overpowering cynicism, Dale. The little town that is a big city up north of NY had a #### week, and they managed the #### storm reasonably well. Let 'em be for a while.

Hence the continued popularity of sports.

By the way, if Papi hits a home run today, the art of fiction is officially dead.

The 'error' is such an insanely stupid stat. Lawrie just had a line drive hit RIGHT AT HIM and he missed it. Official scorer says: single. WTF.

From GameCast:

"Wade LeBlanc has thrown 80 pitches but has plenty left in the tank, with his fastball sitting at 84 over the past 10 pitches."
   32. Dock Ellis on Acid Posted: April 20, 2013 at 02:36 PM (#4420401)
I was at the Mets game last night, and suddenly some bleacher bums started chanting "U.S.A.! U.S.A.!" I turned to my friend and my friend said, "They caught him." Not all breaking news in the 21st century is reached by internet, texts, and status updates. Sometimes the wisdom of the crowd is sufficient.

And then they sang Sweet Caroline. It was oddly effecting. It is not every day you see obnoxious NYC fans cheering for Boston, and it's terrible that it takes a tragedy for such a thing to happen, but sports give us a way to offer solidarity and support for others when we have no earthly idea what the hell else to do except express our profound sorrow. My father is from Boston, and I live in New York City. I was proud of both towns last night, and sports help give that to me.
   33. boteman is not here 'til October Posted: April 20, 2013 at 02:43 PM (#4420406)
I liked the idea that some ballpark (Twins?) played the theme from Cheers to honor Boston. That seemed more appropriate than Sweet Caroline, despite that becoming something of a tradition. It doesn't suggest Boston to me any more than John Denver's Country Boy suggests the urban port city of Baltimore to me. They might as well have played Neil Young singing Sweet Adeline.

Brewers played Cheers, I think. Good choice, considering the cities (though Minneapolis certainly is hard drinking too).

Very nice looking. I'm assuming that they are going to sell those as a charity tie in some how. Heck I might be willing to get one of those.

What's the song that most symbolizes a city?

Like, I know that by going by what they play at the end of games they win, there is "New York, New York" in NYC, Boston is "Dirty Water", SF is (I believe) "I Left My Heart in San Francisco", LA is "I Love LA"....
   41. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: April 20, 2013 at 03:14 PM (#4420427)
"Meet me in St. Louis"?

Probably more predictable than Cervelli's 178 OPS+. Even I hadn't counted on that.
   43. Blastin Posted: April 20, 2013 at 03:16 PM (#4420431)
I wonder what Kuroda's stat line for April would look like if he hadn't gotten hit in the finger.
   44. Jolly Old St. Nick Is A Jolly Old St. Crip Posted: April 20, 2013 at 03:17 PM (#4420432)
The 'error' is such an insanely stupid stat. Lawrie just had a line drive hit RIGHT AT HIM and he missed it. Official scorer says: single. WTF.

That ball had a ton of nasty topspin on it that made it a hell of a hard play. Both the Toronto announcers mentioned this.

"Meet me in St. Louis"?

...That'd work. And just thinking off the top of my head, there is "Detroit Rock City", the Will Smith song about Miami, "Everything's Up To Date In Kansas City", there are at least two songs I can think of about Chicago....

Gameday says Robertson is throwing a 94 mph cutter. I don't think this is the case.

He's throwing something at 93 that sure looks like it's moving like a cutter.

Luckily he gave Rajai Davis a curve ball, otherwise this game would not be tied.

I really hate the fact that the Mets traded Jefry Marte for Colin Cowgill. It's not that Marte is a can't miss prospect but Cowgill is a guy you should be able to pickup off waivers or sign to a minor league contract. Not give up a 22 year old 3b baseman who is putting up a .256/.389/.349 line in AA so far.

It probably won't matter in the long run but it might and Cowgill isn't worth that.

Marcum should be back soon but the Mets have three questionable starters after Harvey and Niese. Gee's velocity has been way down. The AAA starters are getting lit up for the most part but it's the PCL so who knows what that means.

@NationalsPR: Nationals up lead to 3-0 as Werth doubles & Harper follows with 6th HR of '13. Remember, #Nationals are 3-0 when hitting multiple homers.

Thanks, I'll try to remember that as the Nats bullpen gacks up the lead later.

Jays just allowed 2 runs off a bunt with runners on first and second.

Lawrie's had an odd game. Some great plays, but missed a line drive that scored 2 runs earlier, and now didn't read the bunt very well and couldn't get back to third.

EDIT: Also, Ichiro really laid down a lemon of a bunt. I'd have figured he'd be good at that.
   98. Lassus Posted: April 20, 2013 at 04:18 PM (#4420531)
