Texas Tech vs TCU: Chris Sadberry vs Preston Morrison. Big 12 matchup, teams split four games this year. Morrison was the Big 12 pitcher of the year but was hammered by Tech in his only start against them; he's a good college pitcher who isn't likely to have a career at the next level. Sadberry's been dominant in postseason and handled the Raiders in his only start against them.

Ole Miss vs Virginia: Chris Ellis vs Nathan Kirby. Kirby threw a no-hitter with 18 Ks and one walk against Pitt earlier this year, but I don't think he's faced a team as deep offensively as the Rebels are, and he struggled against Maryland in the supers. Ellis's best pitch is a cutter; Virginia's best hitters are left-handed, which kind of negates that strength.

As I said yesterday, the Cavaliers have the best team. They're probably deeper in arms than any of the other CWS teams (not that you really need this with the off days that you have this week but they can call on a lot of guys if they need them).

This is the 50th anniversary of Jim Bunning's perfect game, at least if you count by Father's Days. Our church had a June Festival that day, and at some point we kids noticed all the men were gathered near a loudspeaker listening to the game. I heard the last inning -- it was a very cool happening. It seemed like an omen that the Phils were real and would win the pennant. One of those two things came true. :(

18 year old Rick Wise won his first Major League game in game 2. I had always remembered that it was his debut, but he had had 1 start prior and several relief appearances, according to BR. Thanks Sean, for ruining a good story. :)

I'll be in Denver watching the Game of Thrones finale with a bunch of strangers, so I expect Hombre to hold down the Braves-Angels chattering tonight. If you could throw in some stereotypical pessimistic Braves' fan commentary ("Damn you, BJ" and "Oh, good, Carpenter's up") as well I'd be much obliged. I figure both sides' relentless despair and weariness should be represented.

Don't worry CFBF, the Nationals are trotting out Ryan Zimmerman the short ways to 1B, his first time ever in a Major League game Denard Span has been scratched in favor of Nate McLouth, and Scott Hairston is in LF. So there should be more than enough angst and fatalism here to go around. :-(

That will make Cardinals announcer, Rick Horton happy to hear.

They're facing the Cardinals in St. Louis. That's a recipe for fatalism in and of itself.

Who in the heck is Nick Greenwood? Cardinals sent down Grichuk for Nick Greenwood (bb-ref says he's a 22 year old pitcher in AAA.... I'm guessing he's backup for Martinez start tomorrow)

Jesus Hairston, why don't you try running hard out of box? You're not good enough to stand there admiring your home runs that aren't.
   9. cardsfanboy Posted: June 15, 2014 at 02:33 PM (#4726599)
Hairston screwed that up, should have been an easy double if he moves even at half speed out of the box.
   10. cardsfanboy Posted: June 15, 2014 at 02:35 PM (#4726601)
Nationals should be up 1-0, with a man on second (the single would have scored Hairston from second, and the batter would have probably taken second on the throw) instead men on first and second...still two very hard hit balls so there has to be fear that they will continue to torch the ball.
   11. cardsfanboy Posted: June 15, 2014 at 02:38 PM (#4726602)
That is one way to keep your walk total down, hit the batter on the fourth pitch.
   12. Joey B. has reignited his October #Natitude Posted: June 15, 2014 at 02:39 PM (#4726603)
That ####### deserves to be pulled out of the game right now way more than Harper did when he got pulled.

Just f@cking give Matt Adams the Barry Bonds treatment. Seriously!
   14. cardsfanboy Posted: June 15, 2014 at 02:45 PM (#4726609)
Welcome back Matt Adams... :)
   15. TerpNats Posted: June 15, 2014 at 02:47 PM (#4726610)
Why did I know this was going to happen?

Of course, no one on D.C. sports talk will give a damn about this; they're too busy talking about RGIII. I'm moving to Los Angeles in a few weeks, and while I'll still follow the Nats, I'll be glad to be gone from those one-dimensional sports fans. They deserve Snyder and that soap opera of a football team.
   16. cardsfanboy Posted: June 15, 2014 at 03:00 PM (#4726617)
Al is bagging on Jon Jays "dive" right there. Claiming he did it to make it look a little better. It looked like he was leaning over to make the catch on the run and his body just fell forward, I don't think there was any conscious decision to dive on that play.(he's not a soccer/basketball player that has trained himself to flop)
   17. Mike Emeigh Posted: June 15, 2014 at 03:00 PM (#4726618)
Texas Tech vs TCU about to get under way. I really think this one is a true tossup.

As the weather heats up, it looks like the Cardinals are starting to find their homerun stroke. Wonder how fast that ball came off of Hollidays bat. (usually he's among the fastest ball off of bat guys in the league)

edit: 106.5 mph.... (Adams was 102.5.)
   19. cardsfanboy Posted: June 15, 2014 at 03:09 PM (#4726627)
Was thinking it was a little faster... list of fastest homeruns, Stanton and Ortiz are current leaders with 119.9.
   20. cardsfanboy Posted: June 15, 2014 at 03:14 PM (#4726633)
Wow..... That was a major league play by Kolten Wong...

Morrison breezes through the first, two Ks. TCU coming up.

Horned Frogs small ball their way to the first run of the game. Cody Jones leadoff double followed by SH and SF.

Just like to point out that Billy Hamilton has now hit two home runs in as many days. I confidently predict 162 home runs from him next year.

Seriously though, 4 HR on the year is about 4 more than I thought he'd hit.
   24. Joey B. has reignited his October #Natitude Posted: June 15, 2014 at 03:30 PM (#4726653)
LOL, MASN now trotting out the injury report, which I guess is going to be the official excuse for getting our asses kicked.

He's got a higher slg% hitting left-handed than Jay Bruce (which, sadly, partly explains why the Reds are 14th in the NL in runs scored)
   26. valuearbitrageur Posted: June 15, 2014 at 03:49 PM (#4726681)
Sample size obviously, but Billy is on pace to be a league average player this year.

I think that if he can put up an 80 ops+ all season long, he should be close to an average or slightly below average player, his defense is probably not as good as his rField says it is(+6) but it does look like he's improving as a player as the season progresses. Should be on the short list for NL ROY at the end of the season.

More importantly, if he can get his obp to .310-.320 or better then, regardless of his ops, he should be a decent valued player.
   28. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: June 15, 2014 at 04:35 PM (#4726715)
Nice bit of incompetence by the Twins' right fielder to effectively end the game.
   29. boteman Posted: June 15, 2014 at 04:52 PM (#4726722)
The Nationals can only score runs today on bases-loaded walks.
   30. TerpNats Posted: June 15, 2014 at 04:56 PM (#4726725)
After six games of the road trip, the Nats appeared to have turned the corner; now those same old doubts have re-emerged. The four-game series next weekend with Atlanta will determine whether those doubts were unwarranted or truly justified.
   31. cardsfanboy Posted: June 15, 2014 at 04:57 PM (#4726727)
Cardinals are 19-3 against the NL East at home since last year....have the Mets and Phillies next.
   32. boteman Posted: June 15, 2014 at 05:06 PM (#4726729)
The Cards can have at them!
   33. Mike Emeigh Posted: June 15, 2014 at 07:15 PM (#4726808)
Great ball game in Omaha. TCU wins it 3-2. Both starters were outstanding, with the run TCU scored in the first holding up until the 8th. Texas Tech picked up a pair in the top half of the 8th on a two-run triple by Tyler Neslony, but the Frogs countered with a pair of their own in the bottom half on a throwing error and a Boomer White RBI single.

Has Victor Martinez been tested for steroids lately?
   36. Mike Emeigh Posted: June 15, 2014 at 09:41 PM (#4726908)
UVa gets one in the fifth, after three innings of seeing Chris Ellis dance in and out of trouble. But it could have been worse - two rockets were converted into a line drive DP and the third out. 1-0 Cavs through 5. Nathan Kirby's been great.

   37. Mike Emeigh Posted: June 15, 2014 at 10:07 PM (#4726941)
Nathan Kirby has completed seven innings of one-hit shutout ball. UVa holds onto a 1-0 lead.

   38. Mike Emeigh Posted: June 15, 2014 at 10:26 PM (#4726968)
Two rockets by the Virginia 4-5 hitters to the deep part of the ballpark with two runners on, both run down by Austin Bousfield, hold it at 1-0 after 7. The way Kirby's pitching, though, one might be enough.

Ladies and gentlemen, the Angels bullpen.
   40. Mike Emeigh Posted: June 15, 2014 at 10:36 PM (#4726983)
Kirby walks two to start the eighth, and that's the end of the road. Outstanding effort, but as I said before, UVa has some arms.

Ole Miss hadn't gotten a runner to second all night before now.

RBI groundout after a sac ties the game at 1 for Ole Miss. For the third time in four CWS games, a team loses a 1-0 lead in the 8th.

Steve Bedrosian >>> Cam Bedrosian

Incongruent variance >>> Hank Conger

Brick wall >>> Josh Hamilton

I thought L.A. El Hombre was exaggerating about this Angels bullpen.
   45. boteman Posted: June 15, 2014 at 11:09 PM (#4727036)
Now the Angels break out the heavy artillery: Raul Ibañez.
   46. TerpNats Posted: June 15, 2014 at 11:28 PM (#4727056)
Cavs get a 2-1 walkoff win.
   47. boteman Posted: June 15, 2014 at 11:36 PM (#4727060)
Carpenter hits Pujols on the elbow, extended convo with plate ump on the way down to 1B, now Fredi out to "manage" and bring in Kimbrel.
   48. boteman Posted: June 15, 2014 at 11:44 PM (#4727065)
Braves take sole possession of 1st place and all ESPN can talk about is the basketball finals. Eh, priorities I guess.
F@ck 'em.
