It's FUBAR Friday with your host Rob Dibble:
@robdibble49: OMG, Sabermetrics it's the ultimate in BS speculation. Kinda like, if The Queen had balls Shed be The King. Give it up nerds

@robdibble49: Really, please explain it to me, OPS, like is that adding slugging and OBP, that was hard, who thought up WAR? What's that stat?

@robdibble49: How many Championships does Billy have? Do this math...Zero

Mark McGuire I know you're mad at me, but believe me.... No one is more mad at me than myself for writing that book.

Jose never should have written that book?

The Cubs' Ryan Sweeney drove in 5 runs over the previous 12 weeks before today; he has 4 so far vs. the Cardinals and the game is in the 3rd inning.
   4. salvomania Posted: July 25, 2014 at 05:33 PM (#4757790)
The Cubs' Luis Valbuena, Wellington Castillo and Ryan Sweeney have reached base six times in sox plate appearances over the first three innings, and scored four times.

Slumping Birds in danger of dropping fourth straight game after pulling close the weekend before the All Star game...

Now a Travis Wood homer for the Cubs...

Isn't this the team that looked uttlerly defeated and delated a couple days ago when they were getting destroyed by the Padres?
   6. salvomania Posted: July 25, 2014 at 05:56 PM (#4757805)
A coupla Cardinal homers in the 4th get it back to 5-5... what, is the wind blowing out at Wrigley today?
   7. salvomania Posted: July 25, 2014 at 06:17 PM (#4757812)
In almost 200 PA, the 37-year-old Mark Ellis has an OPS+ of 40...

I know he's lefthanded and everything, but why not give Wong more than the THREE starts vs. LHP that he has so far? He's been a better hitter vs. LHP than Ellis has..
   8. salvomania Posted: July 25, 2014 at 06:18 PM (#4757814)
OSCAR with the pinch-hit RBI single, Birds back up on top...
   9. cardsfanboy Posted: July 25, 2014 at 06:20 PM (#4757816)
Taveras gives the Cardinals a 6-5 lead....beating the shift, which for the life of me, I do not get why you do with a man in scoring position.

I know he's lefthanded and everything, but why not give Wong more than the THREE starts vs. LHP that he has so far? He's been a better hitter vs. LHP than Ellis has..

I'm fine with Wong playing 3 out of 4 games. I've never been a fan of set lineups and not resting players, but I really do hate Ellis, the guy looks positively toasty out there this year.

bautista takes a 3-0 kuroda fastball to the seats,,,3-0 jays in the first with one out

Neil FN Ramirez!

RHP Tanner Roark starting for the Nationals tonight sports a BAA of .216 against LHB and .266 against RHB. I did not expect that.
   13. boteman Posted: July 25, 2014 at 07:32 PM (#4757847)
@BillShaikin: Dan Uggla called up by #SFGIants, in starting lineup vs #Dodgers.

Wow. The Giants must be desperate!

Cardinals pitchers hitting batters has amped up in the second half of the season.

beurhle starts his meltdown vs the yankees in the second,,,,1-11 record against the evil empire
   17. Snowboy Posted: July 25, 2014 at 07:49 PM (#4757856)
Mark Buehrle just has a thing about the Yankees?
His only, and I say ONLY, win against the Yankees was in 2004.
He has almost a 6 ERA when pitching to them.
Posted to a 3-0 lead already tonight vs Kuroda, but stay tuned...
   18. simon bedford Posted: July 25, 2014 at 07:54 PM (#4757861)
yankees get 2,,,top of the 3rd coming up
   19. simon bedford Posted: July 25, 2014 at 08:00 PM (#4757864)
bautista simply owns kuroda,,,4 hits, 4 hrs,,,and now its 4-2 jays
   20. Snowboy Posted: July 25, 2014 at 08:04 PM (#4757867)
Hi metzy <tip o'cap>
Bautista homers...again...(as in, _again_ in this game, and again and again every time they face each other)
watching it, my reaction is the same as Kuroda...come on, really? Again?
Definition of ownage.

beltran homers 4-3...this is not going to be a pitchers nite it appears
   23. simon bedford Posted: July 25, 2014 at 08:08 PM (#4757870)
when beurhle is off he looks about as bad as anyone in the majors.
   24. simon bedford Posted: July 25, 2014 at 08:09 PM (#4757871)
and on cue ichirco! with a 3 run dinger ...6-4 bronx
   25. boteman Posted: July 25, 2014 at 08:12 PM (#4757874)
If you want an honest-to-goodness pitchers' duel, tune in to the Nats @ Reds game. Some cat named Tanner Roark is perfect through 3, Alfredo Simon has allowed 5 baserunners but they have yet to touch home plate.

edit: OK, cancel that pitchers' duel, make it a pitcher's duel as Simon just gave up a bunch of hard hits to allow the Nats to tack on 3 runs in the 4th.

What's up with the Cardinals not playing Taveras?

The Racing Rushmores taking the show on the road? Nice.

What's up with the Cardinals not playing Taveras?

You sound like Bernie(Cardinals beat writer who has been harping on this for a while)

Cardinals are trying to win, neither Taveras or Craig have hit this year, meanwhile Holliday, Jay and Adams have hit this year. To find playing time for Taveras means either benching Craig or one of the other guys who is hitting, it's not really useful to bench one of the few guys who is hitting to hope for a chance that the two guys who aren't will start, so you are stuck with rotating Craig and Taveras. If the Cardinals offense was doing better you could take a chance with playing Taveras more and hope he finds his stroke, but right now results are more important than potential.

Note: Taveras is not over matched at the major league level, he's just not getting the hits, but when you watch him bat, it's clear he's a capable major league hitter. He isn't Wong of last year who was over matched or Grichuk of this year where he has a massive exploitable hole, he's just not getting the luck right now.

Yankees go for a pitching change, taking out Kuroda, with the lead and Ryan Goins coming to the plate.
Kuroda is at 94 pitches, has allowed 4 runs, but 3 of them in the first inning.
Goins has about a .150 BA on the year.
   33. simon bedford Posted: July 25, 2014 at 08:59 PM (#4757890)
its strange that this is one of the only times a game has sped up when the jays took beurhle out
   34. Joey B. has reignited his October #Natitude Posted: July 25, 2014 at 09:06 PM (#4757892)
LaRoche makes it 4-1 Nats. Meanwhile, the Rednecks are down 4-0 to the lowly Padres.
   35. salvomania Posted: July 25, 2014 at 09:53 PM (#4757904)
I think the Rockies may have just turned a "classic 5-4-3" triple play, but the ump called the runner safe at second. I don't know if they're reviewing it---definite forces at 3rd and 1st, but the throw to second was a little wide and it looked as if the 2b may have come off the bag in making the catch.

On the TV replay it looks as if he's barely grazing the bag, so it's probably not conclusive so it wouldn't be overturned...
   36. Lassus Posted: July 25, 2014 at 09:55 PM (#4757907)
I love how I manage to turn the game on just in time to see Murphy boot a double-play ball that leads to a run.

@Ken_Rosenthal: Pierzynski joining #STLCards tomorrow. Already in Chicago.

No mention whether A.J. is joining the broadcast booth or the players in uniform. Time will tell.

Meanwhile, CFB is measuring out the exact length of rope he'll need to throw over the rafters.

That's the reports I've read.
   41. boteman Posted: July 25, 2014 at 10:22 PM (#4757918)
I do not like Benoit's balls.

edit: Apparently, Benoit subscribes to the Jim Palmer school of never giving up a grand slam, so he walks in a run instead. It was Gattis batting with the bases loaded, after all.
   42. Joey B. has reignited his October #Natitude Posted: July 25, 2014 at 10:46 PM (#4757919)
Rednecks lose 5-2, our lead is now 2.5 games and 4 in the loss column.

Don't let Sam know this, but I'm loving the Evan Gattis story, still think he's wrong in that the Kurt Warner story was probably more impressive.

If any Cardinals fan didn't appreciate good framing, effort, defense, or literally anything else they have been getting from their catcher, AJ should clear that up.
   45. cardsfanboy Posted: July 25, 2014 at 11:00 PM (#4757923)
If I had to guess, even though Ichiro played in the "steroid" era, it still shocks me to find out he has 112 career major league homeruns.

That is the part that I'm worried about, he doesn't have a strong reputation for those skills, but he does have a reputation as a redass, and that is also something the Cardinals need, so it may not be a completely horrible decision.
   47. boteman Posted: July 25, 2014 at 11:08 PM (#4757927)
When you're trailing 3-2 in the bottom 9th, OF COURSE you bunt for a strikeout. What's an out anyway???
   48. Jose Is The Most Absurd Thing on the Site Posted: July 25, 2014 at 11:42 PM (#4757933)
Don't see a runner get hit with the ball too often.
   49. boteman Posted: July 25, 2014 at 11:43 PM (#4757935)
Endy Chavez 3.0 slides into 2B head-first and is now favoring his left hand. He might have jammed his fingers on the left hand, but he's staying in the game.

edit: Then Endy gets tagged out about a mile from home plate trying to score from 2B. I think he might be more banged up than just his hand, he looked like he had a mild gimp as well.

King Felix has "allowed" a .218SLG against in his last 12 starts.
Kevin Gausmann on the other side of the bump has matched him tonight.
1-1 tied thru 6.
   51. Los Angeles El Hombre of Anaheim Posted: July 26, 2014 at 12:21 AM (#4757943)
The Angels have been getting big contributions from their spare parts. Grant Green, Colin Cowgill, and just now Efren Navarro with an RBI single to give the Angels a 2-1 lead and knocked Drew Smyly out of the game. A 5th outfield that swings .295/.368/.426 is pretty damn useful.

That Hernandez-Gausmann game has been a good one. ALDS game one preview!

Quiet as it's kept, the Orioles' starting rotation of Tillman/Norris/Gonzalez/Chen/Gausman has been on fire for the past few weeks, going deep into games every night and seldom allowing more than one or two runs. They're two late inning blown saves from being 7 and 1 in Oakland, Anaheim and Seattle.

Hey, tbe A's have no complaints. Big Jim went 4 and 2 for them before he inexplicably got designated for "assignment". (smile)
