Sounds like how my last date ended.

1915 - For the 5th time this month, and 6th time this year, Ty Cobb steals home, doing it in a 4 - 2 Tiger win over the St. Louis Browns. Cobb scores another run when Sam Crawford hits back to Browns P Grover Lowdermilk, who somersaults after catching the grounder and sits on the mound holding the ball. Cobb scores all the way from 2B on the play.
There is not enough somersaulting in today's game.

New record, Lar?

1984 - At Wrigley Field, in game that will be known as the Sandberg game, the Cubs' Ryne Sandberg goes 5-for-6 with game-tying home runs off Cardinals relief ace Bruce Sutter in both the 9th and 10th innings. He drives in seven runs to lead Chicago to a 12 - 11 win in 11 innings. It is the first time Sutter has given up two home runs to the same batter in the same game. Dave Owen's base-loaded single wins it. Willie McGee hits for the cycle and drives in six runs in a losing cause.

My one son talks about this game as being a memorable moment in what for him was a great summer. I worked his *ss of that year (He was 17 and I paid him as the chief hand around the farm) He had become a Cub fan (like me) by virtue of the fact that we spent all of our time outside working and the Cubs were on the radio being the only team that played day games during the week. As we all know, the Cubs won the division that year by scoring a lot of runs so the games were entertaining. Toss in Harry and it was just a kick in the pants the entire summer.

After morning chores I told him he had the rest of the day off, and he hopped in his Chevy Vega and drove with two buddies to Chicago, scalped some tickets and were in the bleachers that day.

I have tried to find him in the sea of humanity when the game plays on MLB Network but so far no luck.

So yesterday I locked myself out of my apartment--because that's just how I roll--and while waiting for my girl to get home I went to a bar (of course). Thankfully because of the blessing of MLB TV I was able to watch footage of the 1976 and 1973 All Star Games instead. A few observations:

Players were much lankier in the 70's. The difference is stark in comparison to today. Even a guy like Luzinski, who everyone called fat when I was a kid, didn't look all that big.

Rusty Staub was a terrible outfielder. Yikes!

Mickey Rivers almost tore Bill Russell's face off sliding in spikes-high trying to break up a double play. If he did that now, it would probably start a brawl and this was an all star game! It's probably for the best they don't let players do that anymore.

In the 1973 game, Reggie Jackson is using some contraption on his bat that is supposed to work like a donut, but it has 4 large, orange fins about half the length of the bat. What the hell was that? Does anyone remember that? I'm assuming it was some kind of short-lived baseball fad as Reggie was using it. Did it work by wind resistance instead of added weight like a donut?

Also, they wore some ugly clothes in the 1970's. My god people!

The fin bat looked kinda like this except it had 4 fins and the fins were longer and orange colored. Also, it was being used by Reggie! and not a crudely drawn stick figure. Has anyone ever used something like this? If I'd had one of these in Little League, I would have felt like I was Michael Knight!

I was watching MLB last nite, too, Shooty. I splurged for it when I moved. They were showing the 1965 WS Game Seven. People still dressed well at games, though that probably changed shortly afterwards. I saw a Twins - Red Sox game from two years after that once and the crowd seemed more casually dressed.

The Dodgers celebration was low key. Also, was this filmed off a television? It was obviously film (you could tell, by the wear and tear.) I thought the earliest complete game tape in existence was the Twins - Red Sox from 1967, so it wasn't tape. But it was definitely the TV broadcast.

Hey Jon. I didn't see the World Series footage. I was a getting a little lit by the time the all star footage was over. It is sad how crappy all that footage from the 70's is especially in comparison to the great film the NFL has. I hope MLB is doing a better job with archiving these days.

They had an All Star marathon one recent Sunday. The music was from the same company that did educational films, I swear. Also, the 1975 one showed the players arriving at County Stadium decked out in leisure wear that would have fit right in on The Newlywed Game.

I'm working on little sleep, so my typing is worse than normal. Apologies in advance for any errors.

The anniversary of King Felix grand slam off Johan. Sigh.

I won't have time to Lounge today, if any of you Loungeheads are wondering why I haven't been around the last couple of days. Too busy at work to Lounge and keep up with the threads that interest me on the Mainland. Then, last nite, I get a call from a buddy asking to crash at my place. I guess I'm running a halfway house nowadays. Then he decided that he wanted a coffee at 4:30 this morning and locked himself out. His battery was drained so I had to jump it. No biggie, I have plenty of work to do and figured I would get in early and start on it. Somehow this put to much strain on my serpentine belt and it #### the bed this morning.

FML, but FHL even moreso. At least I'm not in my wife's doghouse.
