Mission accomplished, twice so far this week.

Arizona has the third best run differential in the National League and has played 11 more road games than home games.

I notice that seven different pitchers have gotten saves for the Cardinals this year, which sure seems like a lot.

Checking bb-ref PI, I see that the Braves have EIGHT pitchers who have gotten saves this year; a few teams have six, most have 3, 4 or 5, a couple have two, and the Tigers are the only team with just one pitcher to have a save so far this year.

Bryant seems to be heating up, another Home run.

Idea: field a team composed of 25 pitchers. This also solves the BludgeonBall "problem".

trivia Q

There are only four men (all of whom are actually alive, but regardless, no one else would qualify who happens to be dead) who could say
"I stole at least 100 bases in MLB"
"There is no one who has both MORE STOLEN BASES than I do, *AND* has a higher career SB% than I do"

Rickey Henderson is the easiest one of the four to name; as the all-time SB leader (by a mile; literally, by many miles), obviously no one has both more SB and a higher SB%.

Who are the other three?

Carlos Beltran?

Well, I was just about to complain about Russell starting vs a RHP instead of Garcia...
   13. Misirlou doesn't live in the restaurant Posted: July 17, 2019 at 02:58 PM (#5862621)
Vince Coleman. I would guess the order goes Rickey, Raines, Coleman, Beltran.
   14. salvomania Posted: July 17, 2019 at 03:01 PM (#5862622)
Chris Archer had one hit all year (in 25 ab) and he's singled twice in two innings against the Cardinals, the latter one coming after the dreaded IBB of the No. 8 hitter with two outs and runners on base.
   15. stanmvp48 Posted: July 17, 2019 at 03:02 PM (#5862625)
Joey Votto is now slugging precisely 400. There are a lot of first baseman, making a lot of money, who don't hit well anymore. And a few who never did.
   16. Misirlou doesn't live in the restaurant Posted: July 17, 2019 at 03:03 PM (#5862626)
Coleman was a very bad guess, because I knew he had fewer SB than Raines, and I also knew Raines was one of the best percentage wise, and thus it would be unlikely Coleman was better.
   17. TomH Posted: July 17, 2019 at 03:04 PM (#5862627)
We already have named all 3. Nice job!

Raines, 808 SB, 84.7%
Beltran,312 SB, 86.4%
Utley., 154 SB, 87.5%
   18. Misirlou doesn't live in the restaurant Posted: July 17, 2019 at 03:09 PM (#5862629)
If you drop the qualifier to 50 SB, there are 3 more. One active, 2 retired within the last 5 years.
   19. Man o' Schwar Posted: July 17, 2019 at 03:12 PM (#5862630)
My first thought was Davey Lopes, though he clocks in at a relatively slackerish 83%.

His 1985 season with the Cubs is still one of my favorites. 40 years old, he stole 47 bases and was caught only 4 times, as a 4th OF who started fewer than 70 games.

Even Rickey didn't steal 40+ in a season in his 40s.
   20. Bote Man Posted: July 17, 2019 at 03:16 PM (#5862631)
Alfonso Soriano?

Well, I was just about to complain about Russell starting vs a RHP instead of Garcia...

I already complained in Gonfalon, and that HR doesn't change my mind. My complaint about Almora at leadoff also remains.

Through 4, Darvish has allowed no hits and no walks, but has hit 2 batters.

I liked that trivia... that is a good fun way of looking at certain things. I imagine if you do it with base hits/average it only goes two deep(Rose then Cobb) hr/rbi also only goes two deep...hr/avg? (quick look... five deep?)
   26. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: July 17, 2019 at 04:07 PM (#5862649)
Through 4, Darvish has allowed no hits and no walks, but has hit 2 batters.

Darvish can be more wild, so I'll guess at least one of those wasn't the batters' fault (I put all 3 yesterday on the batters, but am not watching today). I see Dietrich left the game after his, I'm not hoping he's hurt, but 21HBP is a lot.
   27. Spahn Insane Posted: July 17, 2019 at 04:13 PM (#5862654)
Darvish lifted for a pinch hitter after 6. I don't know about this.
   28. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: July 17, 2019 at 04:19 PM (#5862655)
Yeah, I could go either way there. He's been really good, but he also has had other outings spoiled when he stayed in too long. The bullpen is still relatively rested.

Watching now, and it kinda looked like Ervin was trying to turn his front leg into the pitch but missed and it hit his back foot. Odd.

cardinals going their best to send me to the nuthouse.

went into the 9th with a two run lead. martinez gives up a run.

pirates on the corners, two out, cards up 6-5, fowler runs into the stands after a foul ball and could have really hurt himself.

The Yankees have acquired OF Terrance Gore from the Kansas City Royals in exchange for cash considerations. He is not on the Yankees’ 40-man roster, and will report to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

At least they're being considerate of Kevin Cash this time around.

The Giants announced that Hector Borg will replace Bill Hayes, who resigned out of personal frustration as their manager at Single-A San Jose. Borg was working as a fundy coach in the Dominican Summer League. He managed Salem-Keizer last year.

Billy Hayes wants to spend more time with family.

   38. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: July 17, 2019 at 04:49 PM (#5862676)
They should really have both the 5th and 3rd innings, right?

The Twins have a utility infielder pitching, and he's not even trying. It's pure batting practice up there.

Wow, they just said that was the first run Kintzler has allowed at Wrigley this year, and the first at all since 5/19. He really has been a totally different pitcher than last year with the Cubs; he was a guy none of us wanted to see this year at all.
   43. Man o' Schwar Posted: July 17, 2019 at 04:57 PM (#5862681)
They did one of those the other day. It was along the lines of "remember that pitching change in the last inning? Well, it that was a so-and-so Pitching Change." I guess Pat forgot to say it when it happened, and someone in the truck must have reminded him.

Oh, it's even worse than that. We already get "This isn't a save situation, but if it were, [purportedly non-sponsoring name]."

Does anyone listen to this "Mully" character on "Da SCORRRE"? In his bumper ads he sounds like Cookie Monster doing an imitation of the SNL "Superfans" guys. People actually want to put that in their ears?

Today's Rocket Mortgage Game Changer Phillip "not magic" Ervin just grounded into a DP.

That first part wasn't a joke. The 2nd technically isn't either.

Also, Bob Uecker gets really excited about would-be gopher balls that are caught on or near the warning track.

But how can the same run be both, depending on the medium by which it was observed?? It's Schrodinger's Run.

Along the same lines, that insurance run surely can't also be a Geico/Gallagher one - it needs to have a difference sponsor.

Héctor Neris has been suspended 3 games for hitting David Freese last night. He was ejected from the game. Neris is appealing the suspension, which means he would be available tonight.

Chance Sisco could not be reached for comment, but Dax is expected to be called up to take the spot while Neris is out.

[Davey Lopes:] 40 years old, he stole 47 bases and was caught only 4 times, as a 4th OF who started fewer than 70 games.

That was a deadly Strat-O-Matic card in my Summer 1987 face to face league with a bunch of friends from high school who were back home from college. Lopes also had a .383 OBP vs .319 league average and .444 SLG vs .374 league average. Any single, double, or walk had him practically on 3rd and he had multiple steals of home.

Whoops. Rockies just got swept in a 4 game series at home vs the Giants. They were outscored 40-15, with 8 of the 15 coming in the 4th game.

Charlie Blackmon is finally regressing. 4-25 at home since the ASB.

Noted SABRmetrician manager Davey Martinez pulls starting pitcher Erick Fedde after only 66 pitches to see his bullpen give up the 2-1 lead to...the Orioles. It is now 4-2 Baltimore in the bottom of the 8th. Knowing Davey he had probably been dry-humping his relievers most of the game so they were spent by the time he finally called them in to pitch.

That was the same line of storms that delayed the start of the Nats @ Orioles game, it just took time to get to Philly. It was moving quickly so I'm surprised with modern drainage systems in place that they couldn't get started earlier.
