A.J. Burnett sparkles in his Pirates debut

Let the idiotic “A.J. Burnett can’t pitch in New York” jazz begin!

A.J. Burnett did everything the Pirates could have wanted in his debut Saturday against the St. Louis Cardinals.

He escaped a bases-loaded, none-out jam. He racked up seven strikeouts. He retired 12 batters in a row. He turned loud boos into rousing cheers. And he didn’t even flinch when asked to bunt.

Best of all, Burnett won the game.

Pedro Alvarez stroked a pair of run-scoring singles and Burnett did the rest in a 2-0 victory against the Cardinals.

“It’s absolutely what we were looking for out of A.J.,” manager Clint Hurdle said. “It got silly after a while. He was making pitch after pitch.”

Very idiotic considering he was a key part of the 2009 squad.

I just assumed he was pitching through injuries the last two years.

Can't wait till he pitches for the Yankees.

AJ, you ass.

That said,

So I'm not getting too worked up about it.

Kind of weird how Alvarez managed to plate runs with those singles with nobody else but Burnett doing anything.

Similar to Rick Ankiel Friday night in Washington, who was more or less a one-man show in support of Detwiler.

"It got silly after a while."

You know, I said this many times after a Burnett start. Wasn't exactly for the same reason.

After this 2-0 win, the Pirates are now scoring 2.07 runs per game and giving up 2.79.

Good to see Burnett returned so quickly from his ocular bunt contusion.
