HOW WILL THE ANGELS LOSE TODAY?!

Weather Report

It's looking very likely that the Dodgers @ Nationals tilt will be canceled tonight, account: rain, rain, and more rain. Ferengenar is jelly. It tails off tomorrow afternoon so they might be able to get in a double-header, but because this is the final meeting of the year in D.C. between the Nats and Dodgers, MLB HQ in Oshkosh, Wisconsin makes that decision.

The Mets game should go off without delay, but tomorrow is questionable.

Atlanta, Nicaragua is looking kinda soupy for the next bunch of days, so anything could happen. But Atlanta, Georgia should be good to go tonight and tomorrow night, while Sunday could be a bit damp.

MLB should really reconsider scheduling games where these tropical systems can't postpone play for days at a time!!

Tonight’s Nats game is postponed. Split Doubleheader tomorrow. 2:05pm and 8:05pm

Max Scherzer, now not starting tonight, is heading out to play catch. His start tomorrow will now come on seven days’ rest, as compared to the typical four.

And the RAB Prospect Watch curse lives:

According to George King, top outfield prospect Estevan Florial needs hamate surgery on his right wrist and will be sidelined until August. Florial exited yesterday’s game with soreness in the wrist.

DeJong also to the DL with a broken hand. It's been a bad week for injuries.

That's 10 players on the DL for the Cardinals, 7 in the last 10 days.

My current forecast, ~ 10 miles south of Nationals Park, says continued rain overnight, with the chance of precipitation not dropping to 50% until 3:00 PM tomorrow. Could be quite a test of the drainage of the uncovered portions of the field - 4 or 5 days of rain.

Anthony DiComo @AnthonyDiComo
A walk, an error, an RBI groundout and a Michael Conforto single have the Mets grooving in the first inning against Zack Godley. This will be the lineup the Mets use almost every day for the time being, Mickey Callaway said pregame.

Mets 2, D-backs 0 in the first.

Current Mets lineup:
Walk
Error
Groundout
Conforto

Unconventional names, to be sure, but if they can put up 2 runs in the 1st inning I say go with it.

Speaking of the O's, this was a nice bit of news I'd missed until now:

Adam Jones won the auction for Cal Ripken Jr.'s decked-out mansion
In February, it was announced that Orioles Hall of Famer Cal Ripken Jr.'s estate outside of Baltimore would be up for auction. Ripken bought the property in 1984 and built his mansion on it in '87. In other words, this is where Ripken lived for the majority of his career.

The auction for the mansion took place on May 12. On Friday, The Athletic reported that Orioles outfielder Adam Jones was the winning bidder for an undisclosed price. The auction had eight bidders and the estate sold in 17 minutes. Jones is one of the most iconic Orioles since Ripken, so it is only fitting that he would be the one to win the auction for the Hall of Famer's property.

The only question remaining is how many pies will be needed to celebrate Jones' purchase.

Aside from the obvious cachet of living in a house custom-made for one of the greatest baseball players of all time, the 24-acre property is pretty nice in its own right.

In addition to what may be described as typical mansion features like six bedrooms, 10 full bathrooms, an in-home theatre and a pool, Ripken's estate also has some baseball-centric features -- from a batting cage and a locker room to a full-sized baseball field designed by Ripken himself.

Jones is one of the most iconic Orioles since Ripken . . .

That's your problem, right there. Jones as an Oriole, .277/.317/.459 over 11 seasons, with .155/.206/.207 in the rare postseason appearances. Nice guy, apparently, but not really icon material.

this is pretty great

NEW YORK – Callie Quinn had a ball at Citi Field.

The lifelong Mets fan got to take her prom pictures at the ballpark in Flushing on Friday, four months after the team promised her on the chance to do so on Twitter – if she could get 500,000 retweets with the hashtag, #CalliesMetsProm.

Quinn, a senior at New Dorp High School in Staten Island, wound up with more than just a photo op. The 17-year-old met her favorite players, Michael Conforto and Noah Syndergaard. Each of the Mets who stopped to take pictures during batting practice signed a personalized jersey for her.

"I met Conforto, and I literally broke down. I almost cried real hard,” said Quinn, clad in a royal blue dress with orange laces on the back. “I met [manager] Mickey [Callaway], and he was so nice… and Keith Hernandez, which was awesome.”

But what is a prom without a dance? Reliever Jerry Blevins had the honor of escorting Callie to the “floor” (i.e., the foul grass in front of the dugout), and they danced briefly to the soundtrack of LaGuardia jets passing overhead......

"Of course, [taking prom photos at Citi Field] was the end goal, but all the connections I made through it were really awesome,” she said. “William Shatner was all over this, he was on top of it. Alyssa Milano, she was really nice, too.”

credit to the Marlins, who send Dan Straily out for the 7th with a 2-0 lead. age 29, nearly 200 IP in each of the last 2 seasons, clearly has his stuff - so let him ride against the bottom of the Braves' order.
1-2-3 inning for Straily, whose night is now done.

Cardinals announcers "Cardinal pitchers have been good with sacrifice bunts this year, second most in baseball."

umm guys this is not something to brag about... well it might be, but there is more involved, if those sac bunts are by the pitchers then that is a good thing, but if the team is sacrificing a lot with non-pitchers, that isn't a good thing.

What an AB for Ohtani, works a full count and then hits a laser to left center for a double.
   57. cardsfanboy Posted: May 18, 2018 at 10:44 PM (#5675473)
Pham with a nice double that is a result of him thinking double out of the box, to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead... and yes the sacrifice ensured the run scored.
   58. cardsfanboy Posted: May 18, 2018 at 10:46 PM (#5675475)
And McCarver exhibiting old man complaints... "triples are born out of the batters box, it's a growing trend in baseball to not run out of the box... as if it's cool to not run.... I don't get it."

Dude, your generation didn't run much harder than the kids today, and as I always said, there is a reason Pete Rose is known as Charlie Hustle, it's because he was unusual in that he hustled out of the box every time.... if the players in the past hustled all the time, Pete Rose would have been known as "charlie who does what everyone else does."
   59. cardsfanboy Posted: May 18, 2018 at 10:48 PM (#5675477)
McCarver then actually puts out a good point.. McLaughlin is talking about how the shift is screwing Carpenter, and McCarver pointed out that he had a weak ass hit his first time up... it evens out in the end.

i wonder if that is some oquendo pixie dust there. wacha is on second, martinez batting. he hits a shot up the middle but the SS gloves it, can't get martinez, so he throws to third, hoping to catch wacha taking a big turn, but wacha has stopped. did oquendo hold him? it extends the inning, and now the bases are loaded.

Sure about that?
Looks like a good throw to me. Not a great one. Virtually every 3B in the league could have made it. And would have, had they managed to boot the ball in the clumsy manner that he did and then happened to find the handle again in the gift of the year. His momentum was carrying him away from 1B, which I guess is why people were fooled into thinking this was a special throw. I see nothing remarkable about it.

I'm fairly certain that there has been some Oquendo pixie dust magic with this team that wasn't there last year. The offense isn't doing well at all, but they are winning close games left and right and seem to always be in it, and I think Oquendo has a strong influence on that.
   74. cardsfanboy Posted: May 18, 2018 at 11:49 PM (#5675509)
I think Oquendo pixie dust can be used to explain DeJong's improved defense, Wong's defensive return, and in some respects the teams ability to move runners over even when not getting hits.

Francisco Pena with both his first career double and homerun in this game.... just needs a triple for the cycle(and of course that would be his first career triple if that happens-as he's never had an extra base hit in his major league career before tonight.)

Pham so much wants 30/30 and wants to try to steal in a game that we have a pretty good lead, and the Phils defense is going out of their way to make sure he can't get a steal, wild throw on a pick off, and then a wild pitch.

Carpenter with a run scoring single. He has looked good the past two days, hopefully this is him being Matt Carpenter.

top three of the lineup today 7 for 10, 2 walks, double, hr, 5 runs, 5 rbi.... (it's only the bottom of the 6th now, so they'll probably have another round as there are no outs right now.)

edit: and Gyorko hits into a dp as I posted that.

It's funny, the Yankees were the first team to one mil attendance, but they are massively behind the Dodgers on a per game basis, and are third barely behind the Cardinals on a per game basis....

now the bullpen will really have to work to blow it.

I'm quite confident that they're up to the challenge. 6 outs to go!

Pena went from a .582 ops to a .819 with his three for three day. (dropped down a bit after that strikeout though)

If you had to make a bet on one player in the Cardinals system who is likely to hit a homerun on his first major league at bat. O'Neil is that guy. (in spring training Cardinals broadcasters argued he is probably the strongest man in all of baseball)

Sadly just a single for him....

Pham upping his team high ops with another base hit... the guy may not be a potential hofer, but definitely looks like a guy who is going to be a force for the next few years.... .983 ops now for Pham.... (3 for 3 with two walks)

"This has been the formula for the Rockies tonight: put men on base and let Desmond knock them in."

In 86 I said that the top of the lineup is going to bat again, probably in the 8th... well they are up in the 7th... sadly I doubt that they will get another chance as there is almost no chance this game is going to the bottom of the ninth.

top three of the lineup today 7 for 10, 2 walks, double, hr, 5 runs, 5 rbi.... (it's only the bottom of the 6th now, so they'll probably have another round as there are no outs right now.)

make that 9 for 13, 2 walks,2 double hr, 6 runs, 7 rbi.....

Now I'm just hoping that there is a chance for Pena/O'Neil to get another at bat.

Charlie "0-fer" Blackmon smacks a dick-high slider into the concourse in RF to extend the Rockies' lead 6-1 in the 9th. I don't think the Giants are gonna win this one.

Dan McLaughlin lamenting technology and the short attention spans of fans "Most stadiums now have wi-fi and fans are on their phones playing fantasy baseball."....

Really? You play fantasy baseball? How does that work? He caught himself and tried to back out of it, but c'mon, hanging with McCarver is making you 30 years older than you really are(Mclaughlin is my age..47---I think he's actually a year younger)
