A New Chapter At Sports Reference

Along the way, the only consideration has been what would work best for the user. That’s why, after months of extensive research, I’m very pleased to announce:

We’re Pivoting to Video.

This isn’t a decision we made lightly, however, we can’t help but notice the universal acclaim that has been showered on other websites that made a similar pivot. We see that users prefer short 2-3 minutes videos they can consume both at home and on the run, as mobile phones and tablets have turned things like “reading” into a relic of the past.

Can we not do the April Fools' thing? They're almost never funny.

I don't like AF either, but this is a pretty good satire of the Web's fixation with presenting video in lieu of text.

I for one almost vomited.

I liked it.

Ironically, the text is just OK, but the videos are hilarious.

I fell for it.

Love the picture of Edwin Star which comes up when reading Trouts Wins Above Replacement.

Almost blew a gasket before I got it

I think I'd have recognized this as a joke more quickly if I had not been so confused over what exactly was being proposed. Precisely because I don't think Sean is an idiot, it didn't occur to me until after I realized it was a joke that the idea was that the videos were meant to take the place of the stats pages. I thought they were meant to be an addition to the stats pages, but I couldn't figure out how that would be useful, either. So I was just kinda like, "huh what now?"

The "Lunch Angle" ad was great. "Tank Recruiter" was even better.

(edit)

Then I saw Cute Dog Mode. That could help a number of sites that have gone to video. Just have pictures of cute dogs instead of talking heads.

For a moment I thought I was losing something that I love.

The summary at the top of the page was so over-the-top** that I immediately remembered what day it was, but if it'd been about any other major sports website I might've fallen for it.

** Putting "reading" in scare quotes was only the final dead giveaway

I think they could have sold it better by actually removing the Trout stats in favor ONLY the video on his page... but it was quite well done otherwise. I imagine doing so, though - and Sean would have dealt with angry e-mails of both sorts (i.e., "How COULD you!!!" and "Very funny, now bring back the old Trout page as we've all had our laughs and I NEED to see Trout's 2015 splits").
