A-Rod ties Gehrig for slams lead with No. 23

Fans, for the past eleven seasons you have been reading about a bad contract I got. Yet today…

Alex Rodriguez hit the 23rd grand slam of his career in Tuesday night’s 6-4 Yankees win over the Braves at Turner Field, tying Lou Gehrig for the all-time lead.

The Yankees’ third baseman pulled even with the Iron Horse of Yankees lore when he homered on a 3-2 pitch in the top of the eighth inning off lefty reliever Jonny Venters.

After Derek Jeter and Curtis Granderson singled and Mark Teixeira walked, the Yanks had loaded the bases with one out, facing a 4-0 deficit when A-Rod came to the plate.

It's hard not to be inspired by the recent play of these scrappy underdog New York Yankees. Despite catastrophic injuries and being derided as old and inadequate, these hardscrabble players have managed to pull together and capture first place in the highly competitive AL East. The season is long and there is much baseball left to be played, but the New York Yankees have overcome the sniping of naysayers to this point and seem poised to continue.

Hadn't even realized A-Rod was this close. I remember a while back thinking Manny Ramirez was sure to be the guy to break this record, but it seems like he was stuck on 21 for a good while even before he started fading out of the league.

typical A-rod. Collecting a HR and winning by 2 when a triple would have been adequate for a one run win.

Another anti-Ray:

A-Rod was No. 1 on Tuesday for the fan who caught the ball, a 15-year-old Yankees devotee from Asheboro, N.C., named Randy Kearns, who was sitting in the lobby of the visitors' clubhouse with his mother and brother, waiting to give the ball to the right-handed-hitting slugger.

The family had driven five hours to see the Yankees, and Kearns caught the ball with his cap.

"This was the first time I've ever seen them," Kearns said of the Yankees. "It was worth the drive."

The Kearns family simply asked to see Rodriguez, who said he was going to give Randy a jersey, a couple of bats and some baseballs in return for the cherished home run ball. They hadn't asked for a thing.

"He just came to our security and volunteered to give the ball back," A-rod said. "That's pretty generous."

Will the parents sell the kid who caught the ball on Ebay?
   7. tshipman Posted: June 13, 2012 at 12:52 AM (#4155313)
Wait ... so did A-Rod really not give the kid anything?

That'd be so awesome. "Well, I was going to give him a jersey, bats and signed baseballs, but he didn't ask for it, so #### him."

I was not aware that he was even close. This is impressive.

And with up-and-comers like Andruw Jones, Raul Mondesi and Eric Chavez finally getting a chance to display their potential, the best is yet to come.

Michael Jordan is playing great for the Braves this year.

I agree, if he's a free agent this off-season maybe he can land a Jayson Williams-type contract.

If Wikipedia can be trusted, he is the Mayor of San Cristobal in the Dominican Republic.

And here's the plus for both the parties and their nominees: The candidates aren't required to actually articulate, or even understand, the issues. All they have to do is vote the party line once elected.

Sweet deal. Nice work Raul!
   17. PreservedFish Posted: June 13, 2012 at 05:50 AM (#4155363)
Oh, this is awesome...

"His intellectual shortcomings are obvious," one political observer notes. "We don't know of one project that Raul Mondesi has submitted."
...

The PRD rewarded that decision by backing his campaign for mayor of San Cristobal, surrounding him with a cabal of lawyers and professionals who arrived for a campaign meeting at Mondesi's nightclub and car wash recently wearing crisp white polo shirts with the candidate's name on them. Mondesi, looking as trim and fit as he did during three consecutive 30-home-run seasons with the Dodgers a decade ago, arrived nearly an hour later in a glistening white Mercedes S600, wearing a button-up shirt and a fishing hat and wanting to talk about alleviating poverty.

Button-up shirt + fishing hat + Mercedes S600 = living the dream.
   18. PreservedFish Posted: June 13, 2012 at 05:51 AM (#4155364)
Most of the people, they don't have anything," said Mondesi, who grew up in crushing circumstances just a few miles away. "I know what they need, how they feel."

Asked for specifics, however, and the closest he comes to a campaign pledge is repeating a desire to build a basketball court in every neighborhood.

"The first thing," said Mondesi, who didn't study beyond grade school, "is to try to show the young people how to play sports."

His advisors quickly jump in, talking up plans to increase tourism, protect the environment and exploit the area's large free-trade zone -- subjects that Mondesi appears to have little grasp of.

I listened to the radio broadcast of the game and Suzyn Waldman did an on-field interview with A-Rod after the game. She asked him what it felt like to be in the same company as Lou Gehrig. A-Rod did not disappoint:

"It means a lot. He's such a big brand name for this franchise..."

Only A-Rod speaks A-Rod. I'm turned it off at that point but I assume he used the words "market share" and "synergy" during the interview.

The record isn't detailed enough to know how many times Gehrig batted with the bases loaded, right? It'd be fun to know who the alltime leader in grand-slam-percentage is, say with a minimum of 5.

Yup. If he was really a good teammate he'd have gotten picked off of third immediately after his triple, so as to avoid scoring on either Cano's single or Swisher's HR (with the added benefit of turning those into clutch two-out hits with the team trailing).

When I was a kid, 23 GSs seemed as unattainable as 511 wins, 4191 hits, 892 SBs and 714 HRs. I guess the 511 will stand through my lifetime anyway.

EDIT: Repaired for faulty memory. :(

I guess that makes Edmundo in his 50s (at least). Aaron had 714 in his sights in 1971-2, so you had to be 10-12 (at least) then.

I thought of Pat Tabler, but he hit only 2. But he did have a 489/505/693 line in 109 PA with the bases loaded.

I think the Lounge did that a few months ago. For the people for whom data is available.

It started with this "John Milner hit 131 homeruns in his career, of which ten were grand slams. He hit .249/.344/.413 overall and .308/.342/.785 in 80 bases-loaded PA’s. Pretty cool." - Shock

10 grand slams in 79 opportunities would be pretty tough to beat, yes.

Shane Spencer hit 3 grand slams in 67 at bats when he was first called up, I believe. He also had the PA system at Yankee Stadium play the Pixies for him when he stepped up to the plate once. I am more impressed by the latter.

   39. bjhanke Posted: June 13, 2012 at 12:58 PM (#4155672)
I had no idea this was coming, either, and I find myself really really impressed. Gehrig got some of his grand slams (not all, but some) because he often played in a lineup with two guys batting first and second (Earle Combs and a second hitter) who got on base but had no power, followed by Babe Ruth. If the two first guys got on, pitchers would be supercareful about Ruth, even knowing that Gehrig was coming up next, so Ruth walked a lot to load bases for Lou. While the lineups ahead of ARod have not been exactly weak, they don't have that particular combination of two leadoff guys with no power and someone so good that pitchers would pitch around him to get to ARod. I don't want to claim that ARod was a "clutch hitter" or anything, based on 23 accomplishments, but I am genuinely impressed by his ability to get to this record. - Brock Hanke

Similarly, Robin Ventura's got to have the highest GS:HR percentage of anyone with a meaningful number of career homers, and that's excluding the walk-off grand single.
