HOW WILL THE ANGELS LOSE TODAY?!

Bryant back for the Cubs, but Zobrist still out. Ian Happ starting in CF and hitting 4th...

Love that scoreboard link. I made sure to bookmark it.

Kevin Pillar got his 50th hit of the season just now.

Kevin Pillar got his 50th hit of the season just now.

Speaking of Pillar, I probably should suggest this article, but ehh, that is too much work. Great article on mlb about catch probability from statcast data, I really love the side by side replays. Pillar's catch is in one of the highlights.
   6. Shaggy Posted: May 16, 2017 at 05:30 PM (#5456838)
Love Kevin Pillar. Great to see him break out with the bat.
   7. Shaggy Posted: May 16, 2017 at 05:37 PM (#5456844)
Still remember some of Edmonds catches with his back to the plate. He wasn't really a diver -- which will eventually get you hurt and kill your hitting.

Puig is probably my favorite outfielder*, but there's a lot of good ones out there. Herrera is outstanding.

*Charlie Blackmon, actually
   8. Snowboy Posted: May 16, 2017 at 05:58 PM (#5456865)
Pillar has now just homered. Off Jaime Garcia, who has befuddled the rest of the Jays all day. Makes it 5-3 ATL, who have been sitting on Estrada's changeup, and dinked and donked their way to the lead.

Earlier today Pillar made a catch on the warning track that Buck Martinez described as "a great catch but merely MEH anymore for Pillar". Straight over his head, and he had to go a long way since he was playing shallow. I was disappointed last year when Pillar did not win a Gold Glove. Maybe he's not as good defensively as Kiermaier, and the metrics indicate that, but Kiermaier only played 100 games last year. It was like awarding the Cy Young to a reliever. Maybe it would be Pillar's only Gold Glove, but he deserves that recognition.
   9. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: May 16, 2017 at 06:05 PM (#5456877)
I was disappointed last year when Pillar did not win a Gold Glove.

Well he's hitting better this year so of course he'll win the GG! Isn't that how it works or are they actually using all the newfangled stats now to sort these things out correctly?

That's usually how it works. And I'm here because I want to learn about the newfangled stats. But sometimes the old stats still have meaning, darn it?
However, I'm probably in the minority. Games Played, in a Gold Glove discussion? Rafael Palmeiro scoffs from the couch.

Looong chit chat in Tigers broadcast BAL@DET top 2nd about sabermetrics.
If you can ... well, I ... ack...oof...ahh...ahem...point being: just listen. It has finally made it to the mainstream.

Robbie Cano to the DL for the first time in a decade. Sucks for Cano and the Mariners but he should be back by June. They just gotta try and hang on.
   13. Jose is an Absurd Doubles Machine Posted: May 16, 2017 at 08:14 PM (#5456986)
The Red Sox just ran about a 5-6 minute interview with Jerry Remy and Tim McCarver that was really fascinating. Just two old ball players and McCarver sharing some old stories. It was great stuff. The kind of thing that networks should do so much more of.
   14. cardsfanboy Posted: May 16, 2017 at 08:19 PM (#5456987)
Not a good start, 1-0 Red Sox as Betts hits a leadoff homerun.
   15. cardsfanboy Posted: May 16, 2017 at 08:22 PM (#5456991)
Tim McCarver just explained the silver slugger wrong... he said it was for the best average per position, and of course he is wrong, it's the batting equivalent of the gold glove and is voted on by managers and coaches.
   16. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: May 16, 2017 at 08:25 PM (#5456997)

While wagging his finger, natch.
   17. Brian C Posted: May 16, 2017 at 08:40 PM (#5457005)
John Lackey pitching on a warm day with the wind blowing out makes my blood curdle.

Although I guess that'd be true of any of the Cubs starters this year, the way they're giving up homers.
   18. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: May 16, 2017 at 08:40 PM (#5457006)
Will Bronson Arroyo go down as the last major league player to wear the double-flap batting helmet? I think maybe Shin-Soo Choo does as well?
   19. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: May 16, 2017 at 08:42 PM (#5457009)
John Lackey pitching on a warm day with the wind blowing out makes my blood curdle.

Lackey vs. Arroyo, though - which will be higher, the total runs scored or the combined ages of the starting pitchers?
   20. salvomania Posted: May 16, 2017 at 08:46 PM (#5457014)
Eduardo Rodriguez with a rare accomplishment: walking Aledmys Diaz (5th BB in 151 PA).
   21. salvomania Posted: May 16, 2017 at 08:48 PM (#5457016)
Lynn pitching a decent game so far, if you ignore the two homers in two innings.
   22. Brian C Posted: May 16, 2017 at 08:51 PM (#5457019)
Bet that one felt good, Schwarbs.
   23. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: May 16, 2017 at 08:52 PM (#5457020)
Arroyo might be able to sue Schwarber for elder abuse after that one. Wow.

Cardinals on the board now, 2-1 Red Sox, but Cardinals threatening more with men on second and third and no outs.
   27. Jose is an Absurd Doubles Machine Posted: May 16, 2017 at 09:10 PM (#5457046)
That's wonderful base running by Fowler. I hope some of my little leaguers were watching.
   28. cardsfanboy Posted: May 16, 2017 at 09:11 PM (#5457047)
Cardinals take the lead 3-2..... Good play by Bogaerts on a ball that the left fielder should have caught and prevented Fowler from scoring from third, instead Fowler scored.
   29. Jose is an Absurd Doubles Machine Posted: May 16, 2017 at 09:13 PM (#5457052)
I don't know if Benintendi could have gotten there. Not sure if he got a bad jump or just had too far to go, NESN didn't have a good replay.
   30. cardsfanboy Posted: May 16, 2017 at 09:14 PM (#5457053)
It looked like he lost it in the lights, he took a couple of steps and just stopped.

Thanks.

Chris Carter 2-run HR. 5-0, Yankees over Royals.
   33. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: May 16, 2017 at 09:19 PM (#5457061)
Huh. The Reds actually have another double-flap guy, Jose Peraza. And come to think of it, didn't Brayan Pena wear one when he was with the Reds too?

EDIT: And Shin-Soo Choo...also a former Red. It's a conspiracy!
   34. cardsfanboy Posted: May 16, 2017 at 09:26 PM (#5457075)
Molina finally does a Molina thing this year, perfect on target throw to get the steal, Wong on the other hand nearly messed up the tag as Benintendi made a great slide.
   35. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: May 16, 2017 at 09:29 PM (#5457080)
I really enjoy lackey getting bombed, especially by bad luck, as long as the Cubs still win. #### that guy.

Only "watching" on Gameday, but Cards-Red Sox home plate ump Bill Little seems to have a wide strike zone...
   37. cardsfanboy Posted: May 16, 2017 at 09:32 PM (#5457091)
Steve Carlton is supposedly going to be interviewed on air next half inning, I don't think I've ever heard Carlton speak(I know he said something controversial a few years back, but I've never heard him speak)

Neither dugout is happy with him today.
   39. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: May 16, 2017 at 09:34 PM (#5457094)
If we were to try to isolate the single most off-putting thing about Lackey, what would it be? The horse face? The b*tching about the strike zone? The gestures he makes at his fielders when a ball drops in? The gestures he makes to the bench when the shift makes a hit out of a ball that probably would have been an out? The awful Garth Brooks song before every at-bat?
   40. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: May 16, 2017 at 09:37 PM (#5457096)
The complaining at the umps and fielders. Equally annoying. Made worse by his stupid horse face.
   41. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: May 16, 2017 at 09:40 PM (#5457100)
The Garth Brooks song is pretty egregious too though. No, it's too hard to isolate just one thing.
   42. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: May 16, 2017 at 09:46 PM (#5457105)
I'm falling for Ian Happ...
   43. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: May 16, 2017 at 09:50 PM (#5457108)
Betts and JBJ taking on the Cards all by themselves!
   44. cardsfanboy Posted: May 16, 2017 at 09:52 PM (#5457110)
Red Sox regain the lead by manufacturing a couple of runs.

Someone in the stable get the hose ready, here comes lackey.

Someone in the stable get the hose ready, here comes lackey.

Eh, 3 runs in 5 1/3 on a night like this isn't too bad. Give him an apple and a sugar cube.
   47. Jose is an Absurd Doubles Machine Posted: May 16, 2017 at 10:01 PM (#5457119)
I like this Cardinal team. That's a deeper lineup than I appreciated.
   48. Bote Man Posted: May 16, 2017 at 10:02 PM (#5457120)
While taking advantage of burger & beer night at Funky Buddha I was pleased that they had MLB Network on with live look-ins between 7 and 8 PM (before they went to the Cards game). At first glance I could've sworn that Benintendi was a left-hand batting Pete F. Kozma. Scary!
   49. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: May 16, 2017 at 10:08 PM (#5457125)
Eh, 3 runs in 5 1/3 on a night like this isn't too bad. Give him an apple and a sugar cube.

It's almost 90 degrees. Think of the smell with that lather he's worked up.
   50. Bote Man Posted: May 16, 2017 at 10:20 PM (#5457130)
Bryce Harper just hit a baseball to the tippity-top row of right field seats at PNC Park to give the Nationals an additional 2 runs necessary to cushion the blow of their porous bullpen. Now 8-4 Nats in the top 9th.

If that screen fence had not been standing behind the seats, that ball is into the river.
   51. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: May 16, 2017 at 10:25 PM (#5457133)
What a great AB for Happ. Took a bases loaded walk, and wasnt fooled by anything out of the zone. He just looks like a good player.
   52. ERROR---Jolly Old St. Nick Posted: May 16, 2017 at 10:30 PM (#5457138)
Trumbo ties it with a solo shot in the 9th when the O's were down to their last out.
   53. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: May 16, 2017 at 10:30 PM (#5457142)
Feels like the Cubs should have a lot more than a 4-run lead.
   54. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: May 16, 2017 at 10:33 PM (#5457145)
That's Reds pitching for you. You also know they'll be more chances.
   55. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: May 16, 2017 at 10:39 PM (#5457151)
Well, so much for the 4-run lead.
   56. Bote Man Posted: May 16, 2017 at 10:40 PM (#5457153)
The Orioles and Tigers going to extra innings in Detroit, tied 8-8. I like to hop around to different games on MLB.tv like this. Technology can be useful, sometimes.
   57. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: May 16, 2017 at 10:45 PM (#5457159)
Like I said...
   58. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: May 16, 2017 at 10:56 PM (#5457162)
...in which I find out that there is apparently a major league player named Patrick Kivlehan.
   59. salvomania Posted: May 16, 2017 at 10:57 PM (#5457163)
Great, Brett Cecil brought in to face a lefty with runners on in a tight game, what could possibly go wrong.*

*--Lefties have something like a 1.300 OPS against Cecil in 2017

EDIT: Actual 2017 OPS by LHB is 1.429
   60. cardsfanboy Posted: May 16, 2017 at 10:59 PM (#5457165)
Excellent slide, looks safe to me.
   61. Bote Man Posted: May 16, 2017 at 11:01 PM (#5457167)
Per the Giants broadcast the other night, Kivlehan was a big time football hero in college.
   62. salvomania Posted: May 16, 2017 at 11:02 PM (#5457170)
With that walk, Brett Cecil has now faced 35 lefties in 2017, and 18 have reached base via hit or walk.
   63. cardsfanboy Posted: May 16, 2017 at 11:02 PM (#5457171)
Cecil doesn't have a clue where he is throwing the ball.
   64. salvomania Posted: May 16, 2017 at 11:02 PM (#5457172)
Not the type of performance you want from your high-paid lefty.
   65. salvomania Posted: May 16, 2017 at 11:04 PM (#5457175)
Christ, Cecil comes in and throws 8 balls in nine pitches to the two lefties.

Please, Mike, let him straighten himself out in a couple blowouts. Could ANY righty in the pen do WORSE?????
   66. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: May 16, 2017 at 11:04 PM (#5457176)
Cecil doesn't have a clue where he is throwing the ball.

I never really saw him with Toronto - is that his usual throwing motion? It looks like he raises his arm and then achieves forward motion on the ball by falling off the mound rather than following through on his delivery. He doesn't appear to get much on the ball.

EDIT: It's like his elbow isn't bent at all when he releases the ball.
   67. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: May 16, 2017 at 11:05 PM (#5457177)
There's that 4 run lead again.
   68. salvomania Posted: May 16, 2017 at 11:06 PM (#5457179)
Good thing the Cecil contract is only $30-some-million for four years. I don't know how it;s gonna end, but it couldn't have started much worse.
   69. cardsfanboy Posted: May 16, 2017 at 11:08 PM (#5457180)
Socolovich coming in, Matheny is officially surrendering this game. I don't know much about him, but the Cardinals really should send Socolovich down and call up Mark Mongomery (his numbers look very solid at least) I get he's not on the 40 man roster, but the Cardinals have room on the 40 man roster last I checked.
   70. Bote Man Posted: May 16, 2017 at 11:10 PM (#5457183)
Christ, Cecil comes in and throws 8 balls in nine pitches to the two lefties.

If he had walked 4 batters on 16 pitches I think that's called a Soiled Inning.
   71. cardsfanboy Posted: May 16, 2017 at 11:10 PM (#5457184)
Carpenter screwed up on the relay again(he wasn't in position to cut it off and get the runner going to third.)

Ha! Pham giveth, and Pham taketh away.
   73. cardsfanboy Posted: May 16, 2017 at 11:12 PM (#5457187)
3rd error of the game for the Cardinals.

   74. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: May 16, 2017 at 11:17 PM (#5457190)
1,000 wins for Maddon.
   75. cardsfanboy Posted: May 16, 2017 at 11:37 PM (#5457199)
Defense killed this game, but didn't hit enough to deserve a win anyway.
   76. Bote Man Posted: May 17, 2017 at 12:05 AM (#5457208)
The Orioles bullpen will not be outdone by the Nationals bullpen. Donnie Hart gave up 4 straight hits to allow the Tigers to tie up the game once again. It was 11-8 Orioles, now tied at 11 in the 12th. Buck does not look happy as he makes yet another trip to the mound.

He's not singing, "Ya gotta have Harrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrt! Miles and miles and miles of Harrrrrrrt!"
   77. Jose is an Absurd Doubles Machine Posted: May 17, 2017 at 12:13 AM (#5457211)

I don't know if I could stand the 200 strikeouts but man when Chris Davis gets into one it's fun to watch. He is strong.

He was probably grumbling that his relievers' heads aren't square enough.

Oy. White Sox get 2 in the 9th and have the tying run on 2nd base with no one out.

Save us, Mike Trout. You're our only hope.
   83. LA Podcasting Hombre of Anaheim Posted: May 17, 2017 at 01:48 AM (#5457227)
Oh, for crissakes. Cam Maybin SHOULD have made that catch at the wall, but somehow f's it up and Anderson has a home run and the Sox have a lead.
   84. The Yankee Clapper Posted: May 17, 2017 at 02:00 AM (#5457228)
I confess to checking in just to see the reaction to Maybin's play. He drifted back on the track and ended up bumping against the wall, preventing any leap. The front view made it look fairly catchable, which the Angels broadcast noted pointedly, but the last shot parallel to the outfield wall made it look like it might have been too deep to catch. Not sure without multiple looks, and I'd probably need slow mo, too.
   85. LA Podcasting Hombre of Anaheim Posted: May 17, 2017 at 02:06 AM (#5457229)
Angels tie it up! Two flares, one by Revere and one by Maybin, push in the tying run!

They're gonna walk Trout to load it up, and face Pujols with the bases full and one out.
