Weird to have so many day games on a Wednesday, isn't it? This looks like a Thursday schedule.
   5. The Yankee Clapper Posted: May 16, 2018 at 12:39 PM (#5673462)
Looks rather iffy for the Yankees & Nationals completing yesterday's suspended game (5:05 PM) or the regularly scheduled game to follow. 80% chance of rain at 5, and not dropping below 50% until 10:00 PM. Tomorrow is a mutual off day, but rain is also in the current forecast. If the weather was less problematic, I wonder if the Nationals would go with Max Scherzer in both games. Only 3 innings left in the suspended game, and 4 or 5 innings in the regular game might be enough to have an impact. Scherzer would likely go for it - a chance for 2 wins and to have some fun. No similar option for NYY, they have 4 innings left on the mound for the suspended game, and Sabathia isn't a guy you want to push Innings on at this stage of his career. However, unless the forecast changes, it's all a moot point.

Not to mention that beyond the tarp the field is soaked to the bone, creating potentially hazardous conditions, and it's only going to get worse. They'd be crazy to try to squeeze the games in today.

The best alternative at this point would be to schedule a doubleheader for Monday, June 11th. It's an open date for both teams, and they can then ride together on the train up to the Stadium for the concluding games of their four game series on the 12th and 13th. Get to know each other a bit more, swap little black books, tamper with upcoming free agents in a spirit of fun.
   7. TomH Posted: May 16, 2018 at 01:24 PM (#5673513)
analytical thought of the day:

1 home runs are up, or at least maintaining high frequency of HR/PA (currently .030 = 18 per 600 PA)
2 but no one is on pace for a big year HR total. Highest "on pace for" to date is Machado or Albies with 13 HR in 41 team games, on pace for 51 in 162.
3 why?

One reason is: fewer PA. As OBP is down, more guys get 4 PA per game instead of 5. In 2001, Barry Bonds hit 73 dingers. His team's OBP was .342. If they had a 2018-era OBP of .320, he would have hit 70 or 71 home runs, since he would have come to the plate 20 to 25 fewer times.
   8. Random Transaction Generator Posted: May 16, 2018 at 01:29 PM (#5673519)
His team's OBP was .342.

What is the team's OBP WITHOUT Bonds?
He had more walks (177) than the next three Giants combined (Kent 65, Snow 55, Aurilia 47).

This Mets lineup is sad. Evans, Guillorme (who?), Lobaton batting 5, 6, 7.

   11. Panik on the streets of London (Trout! Trout!) Posted: May 16, 2018 at 02:08 PM (#5673554)
Pretty brutal. You would think with a day off tomorrow they could suck it up and play a day game after night game
   12. snapper (history's 42nd greatest monster) Posted: May 16, 2018 at 02:12 PM (#5673557)
Nick Pivetta is looking like he's the real deal. He had one brutal start, but he's got the K-rate over 25%.
   13. Panik on the streets of London (Trout! Trout!) Posted: May 16, 2018 at 02:45 PM (#5673588)
The Mets are infuriating. In other news, water is wet.
   14. Howie Menckel Posted: May 16, 2018 at 03:02 PM (#5673605)
Phillies skipper Gabe Kapler brings in ERamos in the 9th with a 4-1 lead, he gets K K - then gets lifted for Neris, the seemingly-ex closer to get a ground out. so a 1-2-3 inning with no SV in a 4-1 game.

some poor bastard out there owns both relievers in his Rotisserie League and is ticked off
#bangsfistontable

there's actual nothing wrong with the strategy, but I'll be surprised if Kapler does that again. Managers must bow before the SV rule God and all

There's something decidedly wrong with pulling a reliever who has K'd the only 2 batters he's faced :-)
   16. Random Transaction Generator Posted: May 16, 2018 at 03:22 PM (#5673623)
I'm going to agree with snapper on this one.

If I'm at the game and I see my manager do something like that with a 3 run lead in the 9th and no one one, I'd complain.
That's the sort of thing that would annoy me.

If it's a 1 or 2 run game, or there are runners on base already, then I have no problem swapping pitchers for the platoon advantage in that case.
   17. Howie Menckel Posted: May 16, 2018 at 03:24 PM (#5673624)
well, I mean in general - if the splits are extreme enough, can be said to be better to gain an advantage than skip it just because closer Sammy Snowflake will have a meltdown if he doesn't get the SV.

meanwhile, Kapler's move just made a vein pop in the neck of curmudgeonly NY Post sports media columnist Phil Mushnick's head. right up there with teams having black as one of their uniform colors in Mushnick's book of no-nos.

Bingo. A rule that a relief pitcher can't be lifted in mid-inning if he retired the previous batter would go a long way.

I would say a relief pitcher can only be removed if he has completed an inning, or allows a run.

JA Happ has reached base more time today that the entire Mets lineup. 2 hits and a walk, vs. 2 hits.

It's not a major league lineup. Is Conforto still hurt? He's been awful.
   23. rconn23 Posted: May 16, 2018 at 03:59 PM (#5673683)
Yankees-Nats rained out - both games. I don't hate it as a Yankees fan. Bullpen gets much needed extra rest and they miss facing Scherzer. Makeup date is June 18.
   24. Panik on the streets of London (Trout! Trout!) Posted: May 16, 2018 at 04:04 PM (#5673688)
Conforto has struggled but has shown signs of turning it around, hitting the ball hard a few times. He has been awful for the most part.

Cespedes is on the DL.

Jay Bruce hasn't hit for any power yet and got the day off today against a LHP. Hence Evans which is pretty inexplicable. I would rather see Nimmo take his shots against a LHP than Philip Evans.

Frazier on the DL too which is why Guillorme is playing 3B since Reyes has been pretty terrible. They really should DFA him.

Flores has underperformed even more than usual. If he didn't cry in public 3 years ago he would probably have been out of here by now.

Mesoraco has been OK but day game after night game so they have to put in Jose Lobaton. Jose Lobaton, need I say more?

And lastly we have Amed Rosario who had a great game yesterday but most of the time he chases terrible pitches and takes the ones right down the middle.

Bright spots have been Asdrubal Cabrera and Lagares/Nimmo platoon.

That's not a bad choice. The Yanks will be in the middle of a home stand, while the Nats will have a 1:07 day game in Toronto on the 17th, so they won't be at much of a disadvantage. The Yanks now go to KC and Arlington from Friday through Wednesday, while the Red Sox are at home with Oakland and the O's before going to St. Pete.

The Mariners/Rangers game is only on Facebook, not local TV, so I'm watching it on my computer, and listening to the Mariners' radio broadcast, because I want to avoid Harold Reynolds on the TV broadcast. But the radio feed is about 15 seconds ahead of the Facebook feed, so it's way out of sync...

And I've got the Europa League final on the TV.

A rule that a relief pitcher can't be lifted in mid-inning if he retired the previous batter would go a long way.

Managers have been maneuvering to get the platoon advantage for a 100+ years, and now we are going to eliminate it? Because the time of those who spend all day at BBTF is too precious to wait out a pitching change? Nay, a thousand times nay!

How many four-pitcher innings did they have up until recently? Managers have started abusing it. That's the difference.

Yes. If a pitcher can't get righties and lefties out, they don't belong in MLB.

The offense was always meant to have the platoon advantage; they get to choose the batter last. But the explosion of bullpens has taken away the bench depth to PH.

I would got hard 11 pitchers on the roster limit. Each new pitcher must complete an inning, or allow a run before being removed.

No one watches baseball to see the manager walking back and forth to the mound, summoning 3-6 RPs per game.

If a hitter can't get hits off righties and lefties, do they belong in MLB?

apparently, Mets announcers Gary Cohen and Ron Darling opened up some packs of vintage baseball cards mid-game today. it's a recurring feature that is ideal for hopeless games like today's. usually it's 1980s packs, and both announcers ad-lib stories they remember about the player.

some on Twitter want it spun off at its own show, with Keith Hernandez of course

Yes. Platoons have been a thing for a long time. OOGIES are a modern invention.

The starter is known before the lineup is set. After a reliever is brought in, the offense has a chance to PH. Platoon advantage has always gone to the batter, until we reached the era of no benches.

They're the Hall & Oates of Canadian baseball.

EDIT: BTW, apparently at least John Oates gets irritated when people refer to "Hall & Oates" instead of "Daryl Hall & John Oates." I guess they made it a point to use the first names to reinforce their individuality. File under "valiant effort."

   46. Howie Menckel Posted: May 16, 2018 at 06:53 PM (#5673830)
I get an email today from the Yankees hawking various ticket offers.

one is "College Hat Games." You buy a special ticket, and get a Yankees hat that has the logo of your alma mater on the side. ok. some networking opportunities.

here are the schools listed, in order: George Washington, Sacred Heart, Delaware, Syracuse, UConn, Pace, Cornell, Albany, Quinnipiac.

huh? they're all in the Northeast. but wouldn't there be more alums in the tri-state area from places like Notre Dame, Ohio State, Michigan, and Penn State? isn't Rutgers larger than most of these schools? no Fordham? It's IN THE BRONX. no NYU?

per 36: yeah, the spinoff show would pretty much be about nothing - fortunately Hernandez has experience appearing on such a show.

That's Mookies 44th run scored, putting him 6 ahead of Albies

JD homer, makes it 3-0. Finally looking like a home game the Red Sox should win
   49. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: May 16, 2018 at 07:40 PM (#5673842)
Mookie on pace to score 165 times this season...wow.

when they asked the players what was the one stat they looked at, both him and Trout mentioned runs scored. Their sole goal when coming to bat is to eventually cross the plate. Make sense of course but I like the simplicity of the response from 2 amazing players.

In my very limited playing days, running the bases was my favorite thing. Even in a friendly sodtball game, better not stand in the baseline around third base.

Rickey Henderson's one of my favorites, obviously.

Heh. Javy Baez at the plate with a runner on first. Deshaies: "You could do a hit-and-run in this count if you trust Javy to put the ball in play..." and just kind of trails off as Javy corkscrews himself flailing at the pitch.

I'm looking at Albert Pujols and trying to decide when he is going to lose his job, and then I see something called a Kole Calhoun... by the numbers a plus defensive outfielder who sucks at hitting... so I'm thinking that there must be some other option, and apparently the Angels do not believe in a fourth outfielder, so this guy is getting pretty regular playing time by being one of the worst hitters in baseball at a bat first position. And it's not like he is a prospect, he's a free agent to be..... and yet the Angels literally do not have a better option to play right field (according to bb-ref)
