Aaron Gleeman:  Old News, Bad News, Worse News

The Hardball Times’ own Larry Mahnken, who didn’t exactly have the greatest luck in 2004, is off to a horrible 2005. Larry’s apartment building burned to the ground yesterday morning, leaving him with nothing besides the clothes he was wearing. Situations like this make me wish I was incredibly wealthy, because it would be so great to be able to send Larry a nice, fat check and get him back on his feet. Instead, I’ll have to settle for suggesting to any of you who have some excess income that you consider making a donation to Larry via PayPal. He’s a hell of a nice guy and a very good writer, and he deserves to have something nice happen to him.

We post Larry’s blog here very often and he is a fine contributor to our blogs:
Replacement Level Yankees Weblog

This is horrible news and I’m sure I speak for everyone at Primer when I wish him our best.

How is it this thread hasn't been hijacked by Met fans yet?

They've tried, UCCF -- see Sam's post, for instance.

Like others, I'm not in a position to give Larry anything at this moment but I certainly will in the future. But just to say something that's been said several times, I'm sorry this happened but glad Larry is alright, and amazed at the outpouring. I think this is just further evidence aganistt he notion that you can't develope genuine caring for people you only know, with rare exceptions, over the internet.

Larry,
Deeply sorry to hear about this. You may not know who I am, but I know who you are. Though I can't afford a donation of money, I can afford words of (supposed) comfort. COUNT THE RINGZ!!

(That was very painful for me to type. I hate the Yankees almost as much as I hate Duke.)

Damn Larry, I told you to charge the Yankees for using your foreskin as a tarp, but nooooooo you didn;t listen to me.

Seriously, I hope things get better from now on. Although I am sometime hard on you I hope you know I have nothing but fondness for you and wish you the best at all times.
