Abraham: Red Sox have Lackey’s back

Lackey has pitched all season for the Red Sox while trying to support his wife Krista in her fight with breast cancer. There have been times when Lackey’s performance on the mound mirrored his personal anguish. But he continued to show up.  Lackey has not talked at length about his wife’s illness. He acknowledged the situation during spring training, saying that Krista had been diagnosed during the offseason. He asked that the details be kept private.  A series of positive steps came to an unexpected halt close to Opening Day, when doctors informed the couple that Krista needed more chemotherapy. She has since shown improvement, but nothing is guaranteed.

“If that would have happened to me, I would have been gone,’’ said Beckett, Lackey’s closest friend on the team. “I’m at home. There’s no way. I couldn’t do it.  If my wife was going through that, I’d be in Texas. I’d tell the team to figure it out by themselves.’’

Beckett obviously means well, but his comment ends up reading a bit like a comple-sult.

I don't see that. It seems like a pretty positive statement that the guy has kept pitching through personal difficulties that would have been tough to do for other players.

Just in general one of the things that strikes me about Lackey is that for all the on field histrionics when guys butcher balls behind him is he seems to be a well liked guy. I'm only basing this on things I read and certainly have no inside knowledge but it seems like the players like him.

"I already mail it in during even-numbered years," continued Beckett.

He clearly intended it in that way, but some could easily read that as "I'd be home supporting my wife, who I obviously care for much more than John Lackey does his."

I hadn't heard about his wife, so I won't mention that "Lackey's back" sounded like a serious disease.

Yeah, but since that's the personal side of the equation it's not going to get misinterpreted that way. If Beckett had said something different that could be easily interpreted as a dig at him professionally, it would already be a shitstorm.

Yea, I think it's a bit of s stretch to think Beckett was taking a dig at him.

“It was a tough time for John and all of us who know him,’’ catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia said. “You don’t wish that on anybody.’’

When I first read the article, this quote stood out to me, since it's usually followed with "not even him" or something similar. I doubt that was the intention.

No one's claimed he was.

Even when Beckett's trying to be a nice guy he kind of comes off like a dick, although his teammates seem to like him, too. Or at least, I haven't read any 'unnamed players' or 'unnamed team officials' making any disparaging remarks about them.

No, not really, no way, not at all...I clearly don't see that at all. All I read it as is that Beckett is saying it's a mighty effort for Lackey to be showing up at all and he'd do it differently(not better, not worse), just differently.

Any who reads it as you have suggested..is...well..an idiot...and should be shot...on site..in the head.

All snarking and silly responses aside, I just hope Lackey's wife responds to whatever treatment she is receiving and she comes good in the end. Best wishes for her and the family.
