Aceves Excels on the Mound With a Quirky Sort of Artistry

For Aceves, the Yankees right-hander who is scheduled to start against the Minnesota Twins on Thursday, artistry extends off the mound, too. He doodles in a sketchbook in his spare time, mostly cartoons and portraits. He likes to sing and play guitar, and he performed for the scoreboard one day at Yankee Stadium. Yet he has his limitations.

“When I first started playing, I started to try to make a song,” Aceves said recently. “But it’s so hard to do, so hard to do. You’ve got nothing. How do you start a song? That’s a good question. Ask someone and tell me.”

I like Aceves. I also like that he's goal to pitch for ten years, that seems a little bit like shooting for the moon, but you gotta start somewhere.

I saw Aceves pitch in Harrisburg last year. It was the least impressive looking completely dominant game I've ever seen. I wouldn't mind seeing the Yankees give him a chance to compete for the number 5 starter role next year.
