After a pep talk from Pedro Strop, Javier Baez hits his 25th HR in the Cubs’ 3-1 win - Chicago Tribune

It’s a building narrative.

Strop pitched a perfect ninth inning to preserve the Cubs’ 3-1 win over the Royals, and he also gave Javier Baez a pep talk during a 22-minute rain delay after the slugger was upset about his two early strikeouts.

“I was screaming to him,” Strop said. “ ‘Wake up! You got a game to play. You’re the man. The next two at-bats, watch. You’re going to get two hits.’ ”

Baez responded with a tie-breaking home run in the sixth inning against reliever Kevin McCarthy, and he added an RBI double in the eighth.

“After the rain delay, I went out there with a different attitude,” Baez said.

Still wild to think that they got Strop AND Arrieta AND cash from Baltimore in that trade for Feldman and Clevenger.

Strop's got his outings where his command isn't there, but overall, he's quietly been a real reliable arm down in the pen since coming over in that deal.

I was surprised to see Baez lead the NL in WAR.

If the Nationals and Mets didn't suck, I could see this being a year where a pitcher won the MVP due to a lack of exciting hitters.

If you don't think Javy is an exciting hitter...

...that's a different discussion than whether he'll end up deserving the MVP.

If only the Cubs could master the skill of giving game-winning pep talks other than during rain delays. Seems like something that they could work on.

East coast bias :-)

Despite hardly being an NL unknown - it's amusing to me how slow two basic Cubs storylines have been to spread beyond Cub nation:

First, of course, is Kyle Schwarber turning into a pretty good LFer... Debates can be had as to whether he's actually "elite" or not - but he's become a plus glove (and arm) in the OF.

Second is Javy Baez going from guy who does occasional amazing things to just being an all-around star. He's not the same player he was two years ago, either.

Why isn't Strop's nickname "Razor"?

Because P-Str is funnier to pronounce.

Razor because you strop a razor on leather?

#6 ... cuz it's pronounced "strope" (with the long o) ... and because nobody has stropped a razor in decades ... also cuz he's already stuck with the worst nickname in the majors ... Strop-y.

It's hard to imagine Javy needs a pep talk. And I'm not sure I mind him getting annoyed with himself about strikeouts.
