Agent: S.F. has ‘a lot of appeal’ to Big Unit

I’m sure it does, I’m sure it does.

Randy Johnson is being wooed by both Bay Area teams. He seems to prefer the Giants.

“Randy’s really interested,” one of his agents, Barry Meister, said Thursday, the final day of the winter meetings. “We made a check list of everything that’s important, and San Francisco checks off on every box. They’re in the National League. They’ll be competitive. They train in Arizona.

“San Francisco has a lot of appeal.”

Asked specifically about Johnson’s interest in the A’s, Meister was not as direct, saying, “We’re just trying to keep our options open.”

Giants general manager Brian Sabean is seeking a veteran starter to round out a rotation that includes Tim Lincecum, Matt Cain, Jonathan Sanchez and Barry Zito. Sabean wants to offer a one-year contract, and that apparently would suit Johnson, 45.

“He can still pitch,” Sabean said. “The opposition knows who he is. If he’s on our side, the team obviously would have a chance to win.”

They’ll be competitive

Cross that off the list.

I can't wait for the inevitable headline: "San Francisco enthusiastically welcomes Randy Johnson".

Cross that off the list.

It IS the NL West, so I suppose you never know.

The Padres are trying to shave payroll, the D'backs have about $1.55 left and whatever loose change they find in the clubhouse to spend, etc.

The Giants project as a ~78 win team playing in a division that could be won by less than 90 games. If some things break their way, it's not inconceivable that they could contend. Having a healthy and effective Randy Johnson for 30 starts would definitely be an improvement.

The Giants' 5th starters combined for 30 starts in 2008:
- Correia: 19 starts, 5.36 ERA in 102.1 IP
- Misch: 7 starts, 7.25 ERA in 36.0 IP
- Hennessey: 4 starts, 4.30 ERA in 17.1 IP

That's a combined 5.67 ERA in 155.2 IP (~75 ERA+). If Johnson's healthy and effective for 30 starts, the Giants should get around a 115 ERA+ in about 175 IP. Eyeballing it, that looks like an improvement of around 30 runs or 3 wins.

If they can sign Adam Dunn or Pat Burrell, I have to imagine they're the favorites in the West next year.

Hey,if they get this done soon --
Put a ratty white beard on Randy, have Timmy sit on his lap and make a Xmas wish for Teixeira, Dunn or Burrell. How can you deny that little face?

As a former resident of the Castro, allow me to say that a Big Unit would always have a lot of appeal to San Francisco as well.
