So now what? Do we see walk-off HR Baez or strike-out-in-3-pitches Baez?
   202. Brian C Posted: August 20, 2017 at 05:58 PM (#5517524)
Ball one, that's a good sign.
   203. Meatwad in mourning Posted: August 20, 2017 at 05:58 PM (#5517525)
Just need a ball in play and they will tie it.
   204. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: August 20, 2017 at 05:58 PM (#5517526)
Waving nowhere near a pitch in the dirt, that's a bad sign.
   205. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: August 20, 2017 at 05:59 PM (#5517527)
Squaring to bunt? WTF?
   206. Meatwad in mourning Posted: August 20, 2017 at 06:00 PM (#5517528)
Safty squeeze i guess but not anymore with 2 strikes
   207. Brian C Posted: August 20, 2017 at 06:00 PM (#5517529)
Damn, I didn't predict 400-foot-foul-ball Baez.
   208. Brian C Posted: August 20, 2017 at 06:01 PM (#5517531)
???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
   209. Meatwad in mourning Posted: August 20, 2017 at 06:01 PM (#5517532)
Wtf...
   210. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: August 20, 2017 at 06:02 PM (#5517533)
In retrospect, Javy swinging at such a terrible pitch for strike 3 that he was able to reach first was a reasonably foreseeable outcome.
   211. Meatwad in mourning Posted: August 20, 2017 at 06:02 PM (#5517535)
Dropped third srtike catcher forgot about javy, at the corners 1 out

In retrospect, Javy swinging at such a terrible pitch for strike 3 that he was able to reach first was a reasonably foreseeable outcome.

Maybe, but it was unforeseeable that he'd only reach because the catcher simply forgot to make a throw to first.
   213. Meatwad in mourning Posted: August 20, 2017 at 06:04 PM (#5517537)
Of course heyward is up, here comes a weak grounder to second
   214. Meatwad in mourning Posted: August 20, 2017 at 06:05 PM (#5517539)
Javy steals second, next pitch hits heyward. Wtf
   215. Brian C Posted: August 20, 2017 at 06:05 PM (#5517540)
Blue Jays are demonstrating some superior fundamentals in this inning, let me tell you. Makes a spiked throw back to the mound look like no big deal.
   216. Brian C Posted: August 20, 2017 at 06:07 PM (#5517541)
Oh yeah
   217. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: August 20, 2017 at 06:07 PM (#5517542)
Justin Wilson, winning pitcher. Clearly he has the Will to Win.
   218. Brian C Posted: August 20, 2017 at 06:08 PM (#5517544)
Well it just goes to prove the old adage, those strikeout/wild pitches always come back to haunt you.
   219. Cooper Teenoh Posted: August 20, 2017 at 06:09 PM (#5517545)
I love for the Cubs to win, but that inning was hot garbage.
   220. Andere Richtingen Posted: August 20, 2017 at 06:13 PM (#5517548)
I'm watching the game on my laptop on a Sunday afternoon, time to get dinner going comes along and I transfer to the radio broadcast in the kitchen. And all hell breaks loose, topped off with a ridiculous Cubs win. This has happened a few times in the last few years.
   221. Sleepy's not going to blame himself Posted: August 20, 2017 at 06:13 PM (#5517549)
While the Pirates and Cardinals prepare to play a game in honor of the little league world series, the Blue Jays take it a step further and actually reenact a little league game.

Not cool, guys. Not cool.
   222. The Honorable Ardo Posted: August 20, 2017 at 06:13 PM (#5517550)
Has there been a half-inning before with two strikeouts where the batter-runner was not put out?

With a rally like that, I feel like, "That's how the defending champions should play."
   223. Andere Richtingen Posted: August 20, 2017 at 06:22 PM (#5517554)
So in the top of the inning we saw something unique: the catcher gets the ball from the pitcher, who clearly wants a new ball, and throws a bunt to the third-base side of the infield, allowing the runner to advance into scoring position.

In the bottom of the inning, with a runner at third and one out, the pitcher gets a grounder, looks the runner at third back, and then takes a big bite out the ball like it's a Victory Honeycrisp.

Same inning!

Okay then. To quote Nicholson as Col. Jessup in A Few Good Men--"Well. Don't I feel like the fecking arsehole."

It pleases me greatly that the Jays fans who stuck it out go home unhappy.
   225. Sleepy's not going to blame himself Posted: August 20, 2017 at 06:25 PM (#5517556)
I'm sure there's a way to pull that info from B-r, ardo. But I can't figure out how.
   226. Spahn Insane, stimulus-funded BurlyMan™ Posted: August 20, 2017 at 06:29 PM (#5517559)
I will hereby scoop a few handfuls of egg from eyeballs to watch the remainder of this spectacle. That much, I suppose they have earned, though Justin Wilson needs to go on rehab assignment or something. Put it this way--he looked like he had about as much confidence in himself as I had in him.
   227. Spahn Insane, stimulus-funded BurlyMan™ Posted: August 20, 2017 at 06:35 PM (#5517560)
Ha--that horsebleep call on the 2-1 to Schwarber sets up the dropped third strike. That's great

Seriously, this ump. In the last two innings, he missed the Lopez HBP, there was one pitch from the Jays reliever that was comfortably inside the zone that didn't get called. Then this, which was worse than either.

I now understand the solidarity with Angel Hernandez...they're all digging themselves down to his level of incompetence, and feel vulnerable, and rightfully so.
   228. Spahn Insane, stimulus-funded BurlyMan™ Posted: August 20, 2017 at 06:40 PM (#5517561)
Y'know....not to be an apologist for my own lack of faith, and I'm not generally a correlation-equals-causation sort, but: I'm pretty sure the last time I turned the TV off in disgust at a winnable-but-only-improbably-so game was Game 4 of last year's LDS. Just saying.

LOL.
   230. Sleepy's not going to blame himself Posted: August 20, 2017 at 07:22 PM (#5517571)
Replay officials apparently also in solidarity with angel hernandez tonight. Fowler was clearly safe at second there.

Between that and Andere's switching to the radio broadcast, I think we have a damn near foolproof system from here on out.
   232. PreservedFish Posted: August 20, 2017 at 07:44 PM (#5517583)
Are they really playing a game in Williamsport? That's so cool.

Except the fact that it's on ESPN, so I can't watch :(

VERY COOL. Nearly all of the 2,300 tickets went to the Little Leaguers, their families, and officials. A few hundred were sold to townsfolk.
   235. Bote Man Posted: August 20, 2017 at 08:10 PM (#5517599)
Aren't the dimensions of Williamsport a bit cozy for Major League teams?

I'd go over to Funky Buddha or wherever, but I'm deathly afraid that some ALL-IMPORTANT PRE-SEASON FOOTBALL GAME will pre-empt anything interesting and seasonal and relevant, like baseball.

Doesn't look like it according to the wikipedia article.

Field size Left Field: 323 feet (98 m)
Center Field: 411 feet (125 m)
Right Field: 331 feet (101 m)
   237. Bote Man Posted: August 20, 2017 at 08:18 PM (#5517606)
Looks good from England ;-)

I sort of like the sort-of throwback Pirates jerseys.

It's got a few moving parts, but we'll make it work.

Man, I'd have bet the house cfb would've gone off on Fowler's defense after that last Pirate rally.

Edit: Missed 233; that would explain cfb's silence.
   239. cardsfanboy Posted: August 20, 2017 at 08:22 PM (#5517609)
2nd and 3rd no outs, and the next two batters strikeout, that isn't how you chip away at the lead.

Later on they said that the Cardinals did not ask for a replay review of the play. Which seems mighty odd, since it was pretty clearly the wrong call.

Cfb: get Sling, dude! It's like 20 bucks.
   242. Spahn Insane, stimulus-funded BurlyMan™ Posted: August 20, 2017 at 08:25 PM (#5517613)
Fowler himself was certainly adamant he was safe. That explanation in 240 doesn't quite jibe with what I saw.

I have sling, but got it for Fox Sports Midwest, it's not worth another $20 just for ESPN. I only miss a few Sunday games because of that, but still it won't stop me from complaining .

I agree it doesn't jibe, but it is what the game announcers said.

Pirate Joe: Oh sure--I was doubting the veracity of the explanation itself, not your account of it.

Cfb: the cheapest Sling package where I am includes ESPN; not so with you?
   247. Bote Man Posted: August 20, 2017 at 08:32 PM (#5517619)
Piscotty made a pretty sweet diving catch which slide carried him across the foul line on the grass. He had to run a good long way to get to it, so either it was a great athletic effort or his defensive positioning leaves much to be desired.
   248. cardsfanboy Posted: August 20, 2017 at 08:32 PM (#5517620)

There are two packages, one for $20 that includes ESPN and another for $25 that includes the Fox Sports channels.... Fox Sports Midwest and FS1 include about 130+ of the Cardinal games. I took the FSMW package, if I want ESPN I would have to buy the ESPN package also.
   249. Pirate Joe Posted: August 20, 2017 at 08:35 PM (#5517621)
By the way, is there a web site out there that is publicly available that gives the explanation for replay calls? There is clearly something that the broadcasters can access, because on the Pirates' broadcasts they will say something like "that call was confirmed by replay review" or "there wasn't enough evidence to overturn the call" after calls, and clearly they are getting that from MLB.

   250. Spahn Insane, stimulus-funded BurlyMan™ Posted: August 20, 2017 at 08:39 PM (#5517622)
Hm...no idea, but that's certainly an interesting question. Perhaps plebeians like us aren't meant to be privy to such information.
   251. Spahn Insane, stimulus-funded BurlyMan™ Posted: August 20, 2017 at 08:41 PM (#5517623)
248: See how they do us?
   252. Bote Man Posted: August 20, 2017 at 08:53 PM (#5517627)
Explanations of reviews are not generally provided to anyone as I understand it, unless it's a particularly contentious or noteworthy call or play. Even then it's like pulling teeth to get it out of them.
   253. Bote Man Posted: August 20, 2017 at 08:58 PM (#5517631)
I hope you get your money's worth from Sling, because this ESPN game is stopped more than it's streaming so far tonight.
   254. cardsfanboy Posted: August 20, 2017 at 09:00 PM (#5517632)
Grichuk one k away from a sombrero.
   255. cardsfanboy Posted: August 20, 2017 at 09:41 PM (#5517648)
I know a 90 ops+ from a catcher doesn't seem like that big of a deal, but Yadier Molina is quietly having a pretty decent season, roughly a 3 war season. (but getting a 2.5-3.0 war out of a catcher in his age 34 season isn't that common---57 times in history, has a catcher 34 or older put up at least a 2.4 war.... see this link.

(and Carlton Fisk was 7 of those seasons, of course this list isn't all great players, Ernie Whitt has 4 of those seasons,
   256. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: August 20, 2017 at 10:01 PM (#5517654)
I know the NL Central has been weak all year, and that fans of all three teams would of course prefer that their team run away with it, but a Cubs-Cards-Brewers race down to the wire would be fun for all involved, and the Midwest as a whole.
   257. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: August 20, 2017 at 10:06 PM (#5517655)
Huh. On the thread about this Little League "Classic" game a few weeks ago, I joked about them making the players do the lame handshake ritual after the game. Turns out they actually are going to do it.
