ajc: Braves to unveil new weekend home uniforms

Uni Watch: Bill Lucas.

The Braves will unveil a new crème-colored home uniform on Monday that will probably seem familiar to fans of a certain age.

The design closely resembles the home uniform worn by the Hank Aaron-led Braves during their first two seasons in Atlanta in 1966-1967, right down to the player number instead of a tomahawk beneath the “Braves” script on front of the jersey.

...(Derek) Schiller said the new uniform was “ultimately a John Schuerholz decision” stemming from the team president and longtime former general manager’s desire to “re-connect with the team’s history.”

There is no tomahawk on the chest, but two crossed tomahawks are incorporated in a sleeve-patch logo along with “Atlanta Braves” and “1876,” the year when the National League franchise debuted as the Boston Red Caps. The Braves often cite their status as “the longest continuously operating franchise in Major League Baseball.”

The new logo is on the left sleeve, replacing a screaming Indian chief patch featured on Braves uniforms in 1966-1967. Besides that political-correctness change, the other big difference in the new uniform is player names on back. The old ones didn’t have those.

Like it. But it's still been a very bleak offseason for Braves' fans.

Does this mean the tomato soup home alternates are dead? Those are so gross.

No.

The new attire will serve as an alternate uniform for home games and won’t replace any of the other four uniforms currently worn by the Braves. The initial plan is to wear it for Saturday and Sunday home games.

The Braves’ red jerseys worn for Sunday home games in recent years will be switched to Friday home games, said Derek Schiller, Braves executive vice president of sales and marketing. Traditional white home uniforms will be worn Monday through Thursday.

I absolutely despise what the Braves are doing with their uniforms. Home whites and road grays, leave the softball jerseys and other alternates for batting practice. Why would any successful team with a well cultivated brand have five different uniforms? They wouldn't.

Is there a single team other than the Yankees that hasn't succumbed to the temptation of going the softball jersey route?** I thought the Dodgers had held out, but I'm not so sure.

**Other than on league-mandated occasions, such as Negro League or pink hat tributes.

Why can't the Braves have both the number and the tomahawk, as they did for much of their time in Milwaukee?

The plan is to wear those on all the remaining Friday home games after the home opener.

I am with #1. I wish they would unveil a new LF and leave the fashion shows for "overweight brides" or some other reality show. Do they really think they will boost attendance with cool shirts, instead of good play?

Do the Tigers have any kind of alternate jersey? I think I've seen the Dodgers wear a blue jersey once or twice but I'm not 100% sure about that.

I do want to say that the new uniforms are nice, at least, unlike the red and navy ones which are terrible. (Also terrible is that they use a cap with a navy bill now with their road grays.) But they already have a great, classic home uniform. Having one great home uniform is so far superior to having any other combination of home uniforms.

I love the new unis, although I wish they'd kept Chief Noc-a-homa on the sleeve as in this jersey. The jersey DOB uses as his twitter icon is my favorite Braves jersey ever.

I think I've seen the Tigers trot out a blue road jersey on occasion, but I could be wrong. OTOH their classic "D" home uniform has remained unchanged since 1934, with this one unfortunate exception in 1960. IMO that one's right up there with the Yankee pinstripes and the traditional Red Sox home jersey as the best uniform in the Majors.

Attendance has nothing to do with jersey proliferation. The idea is to sell more replica jerseys / t-shirts.

I think the Dodgers wore royal blue jersey tops for some home games during the Fox regime as part of their "Think Blue" week. Of course, last year the team wore sky-blue Brooklyn uniforms from the '40s for a few home afternoon games.

I think it's kind of odd that the Braves stayed away from alternate unis until 2005, and since then they've now unveiled three (without eliminating any).

The Cardinals. They do wear a different hat on Sundays (blue with a red bill, and a bird perched on a bat instead of the StL), but the jerseys are always white at home, gray away.

Tigers wear Detroit Stars uniforms for one of the games during the annual Negro Leagues weekend. Otherwise, I've never seen anything different.

I like the new alternates a lot. I liked them even more when I thought they would replace the hideous red jerseys the Braves wore on Sundays the last few years. Alas, 'twas not to be.

Fine; put Ramirez on the back of a jersey (Hanley or Manny; either will do), and see how many of those jerseys they sell.
   18. flournoy Posted: February 06, 2012 at 03:32 PM (#4054815)
I don't think Horacio sold a lot of jerseys.

I liked Horacio.

Have the Braves ever done a throwback game with the 1972-75 uniforms?

I remember having seen this one within the last few years, can't place an exact year on it though.
   23. zachtoma Posted: February 06, 2012 at 05:34 PM (#4054929)
I can vouch for having seen those as well.
   24. TerpNats Posted: February 06, 2012 at 06:09 PM (#4054958)
I am pretty certain the Braves have done that to commemorate Hank Aaron hitting #715.

I like the alternate jersey. The "Braves" script as it goes over the buttons on the normal home jersey looks kinda weird to me.

The Braves will unveil a new crème-colored home uniform

Is crème a different color than cream? This is actually sort of a serious question.

I refuse to believe anyone was ever a fan of Horrible Ratios.

It was during the Gary Sheffield years...because he jacked one wearing it. It was awesome.
