Akron Beacon Journal: Decision soon on Marte’s fate

Indians third baseman Andy Marte might not be the Indians’ third baseman after his rehabilitation assignment at Buffalo concludes Friday. After that day, the Tribe must decide whether to activate him or option him to Triple-A.

Manager Eric Wedge has said all along that “whenever Marte is ready, he will be back up here.’’ Now, Marte’s future isn’t quite so definitive.

“He had a real good game last night,’’ Wedge said Tuesday. “But we’re going to give it this week. More than likely, we’ll look to get him back up here, but we want to give it all the time we can.’‘

Every day I love you less and less
You’re turning into something I detest
And everybody says that you’re a mess
Since every day I love you less and less

That Coco Crisp deal just has been a turd for everyone, hasn't it?

Well, the first Marte deal worked out for someone. And I was against it at the time.

I have no complaints about Kelly Shoppach.

Hopefully a lesson learned for those irate over the Renteria deal - even if Marte could probably field better at short than Edgar.

The Braves usually know which prospects to keep and which ones to trade. Everyone should know this by now.

I appreciate the Kaiser Chief's reference.

I predict a riot.

I predict they trade him to the Astros for Brad Lidge.

Heh, tell that to Billy Bea-

Wait. Damnit.

Prospects and young players the Braves dealt who didn't develop:
Rob Bell
Jung Keun Bong
Bruce Chen
George Lombard
Bubba Nelson
David Nied*
Melvin Nieves
Luis Rivera
Terrell Wade*
Ron Wright

Prospects and young players the Braves dealt who did develop:
Vinny Castilla*
Jason Schmidt

Jury still out, looking shaky:
Wilson Betemit
Jose Capellan
Andy Marte
Dan Meyer

Jury still out, looking good:
Matt Belisle
Adam Wainwright

Indifferent or otherwise hard to classify:
Roman Colon
Zach Miner
Odalis Perez

* - I included guys who were left unprotected and taken in an expansion draft as being traded for these purposes.

Did I miss anyone important?
   12. Corn On Ty Cobb Posted: May 17, 2007 at 02:58 AM (#2366236)
Jermaine Dye
Tony Tarasco
   13. flournoy Posted: May 17, 2007 at 03:13 AM (#2366250)
Oh yeah, Dye. He worked out well. Tarasco, not so much.

Prospects and young players the Braves dealt who didn't develop:
Bruce Chen
Jimmy Osting
Tim Spooneybarger (how could you forget that name?!?)
Damian Moss (perfect Braves trade, selling high just before Moss collapsed, then getting two good seasons out of Russ Ortiz and letting him go just before Ortiz collapsed)
Micah Bowie
Ruben Quevedo
Damon Hollins
Roosevelt Brown
Mike Kelly

Prospects and young players the Braves dealt who did develop:
Justin Speier

Jury still out, looking shaky:
Andrew Brown
Merkin Valdez (currently undergoing Tommy John)

Jury still out, looking good:

Indifferent or otherwise hard to classify:
Esteban Yan (he was a throw-in in the Tony Tarasco/Marquis Grissom trade...I guess he developed more than they thought he would, although he's not great)
Jason Marquis (I remember him being the exception to the "pitchers who join the Braves get better, pitchers who leave the Braves get worse" rule. But he ended up with only two good seasons after leaving the Braves)

Is the jury really still out on Bruce Chen?
   16. Crispix Attacks Posted: May 17, 2007 at 03:51 AM (#2366307)
Yeah, the team that traded for him didn't get much out of him, and neither did his next eleven teams. I'll go back and Edit Comment.
   17. Corn On Ty Cobb Posted: May 17, 2007 at 04:03 AM (#2366325)
John Rocker?
   18. Crispix Attacks Posted: May 17, 2007 at 04:04 AM (#2366326)
Rocker wasn't an up-and-coming player when they got rid of him.
   19. Corn On Ty Cobb Posted: May 17, 2007 at 04:07 AM (#2366329)
Neither was Justin Speier.
   20. Corn On Ty Cobb Posted: May 17, 2007 at 04:15 AM (#2366344)
And Rocker was a 26-year-old left-handed reliever that was coming off two seasons of 168 ERA+ ball with a 125/181 IP/K ratio. Granted he went off the reservation, but even in his last half season with the Braves he was still pretty effective.

Marte wouldn't be on as shaky ground if Blake and Garko weren't hitting. IMO, Blake's going to turn back into Casey Blake sooner or later, so I'd give Marte another month to see if he can find a groove.
   22. IronChef Chris Wok Posted: May 17, 2007 at 06:32 AM (#2366420)
Granted he went off the reservation

didn't he build the reservation, I mean camp where all us minorities gather??

I was talking to a friend about Marte last night, and he slipped and said "Manto" - Ouch!
