Alberta teen banned from baseball team over long hair

Mackenzie has been coaching the team for seven years and says his decision comes down to basic respect for the game.

“To me, the hair issue is part of the uniform,” he said. “It’s like the hat. It’s like the jersey. It’s all part of the appearance and that’s important to me, to have respect for yourself and for your other team mates.”

The kid says that he’s growing it out to donate to a cancer charity. I’ll leave you to make your own decisions about the respect and moral values there.

The "inappropriate use of social media" was a nice touch.

My favorite part of my employer's dress code (a large white collar outfit): 'keep your shoes on' and 'no stirrup pants'.

In 1970, the team I played for had a kid with hair that (gasp!) touched the collar of his uniform. He was our best player by far. At one of our games, the parents of the kids on the opposing team objected to his long hair and tried to keep him from playing. Our manager told the other team and the umpires that he was playing and if anyone had a problem with it, they were free to leave. The game was played, we won, and the Earth continued to rotate on its axis despite Jerry's long hair.

Wow, I thought a thread somehow got resurrected from the 1960s.

I thought I told you to trim those sideburns? Go home, you're off the team, for good!

If anyone wants to see the strangest thing Sweden has contributed with sartorially, just do a Google Image search for "dansband". There may be some oversized collars involved.

Don't step out of this house if that's the clothes you're gonna wear,
I'll kick you off of my team if you don't cut that hair.

That sounds like a pretty awesome job.

The sign said: Long-haired freaky people need not apply!
So I tucked my hair up under my hat, and I went in to ask him why
He said "You look like a fine, upstanding young man, I think you'll do!"
So I took off my hat and said "Imagine that! Huh! Me workin' for you!"

Whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh!

I thought so too.

I suspect as some of those commenting on the thread do that Coach Mackenzie actually has a very poor grasp of what respect means.

never bought into the manage the whole appearance thing.

just have a clean uniform to start the game and if your folks cannot afford to clean it regularly give it to me between games.

and stand at attention for the national anthem. you can take 2 minutes not fidgeting

but long hair never fazed me. don't like it on guys but if you can see the ball enough to play that works

and hustle. if you dressed up to be seen only then go to a nightclub. don't waste my time

anyway, those were my things.

Almost cut my hair
Happened just the other day
It's gettin' kind of long
I could've said it was in my way

But I didn't and I wonder why
I feel like letting my freak flag fly
And I feel like I owe it, yeah, to someone, yeah

Guys with long hair who can't hit are not welcome.

If you can rake, go ahead and look like Ted Nugent.

even these days fans are screaming about players with long hair - remember all the hysteria about manny and his dreads and tim lincecum - before he decided it was bad luck?

good think that there are now all those tats for people to scream about. it's tough to know what to scream at the White guys though because "THUG!!!" don't seem to do it any more than "gritty" matches up with "Black American-born"

Thank God. I almost didn't see that at first. We almost violated the First Rule of BBTF.
