Alex Anthopoulos to be next GM of Atlanta Braves, report says

Anthopoulos was the general manager for the Toronto Blue Jays between 2009 and 2015. He is credited for leading the team to the 2015 World Series playoffs and its first 90-win season since 1993.

For the last two years, the 40-year-old Montrealer has been working as the vice-president of baseball operations for the Los Angeles Dodgers, where he landed after refusing to continue with the Jays in 2015.

to the 2015 World Series playoffs

"...Alina you used to cover hockey once the Leafs season was finished. Yes we would get you to write about the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Now go write a story about this baseball hiring."

2015 World Series Playoffs? Go back to Russia!!!!

Seems like a decent hire. The Dodgers had built up such a big bench at GM that it seemed inevitable that other teams would start poaching their talent eventually.

So would he have been better off working for Shapiro, or taking on the Braves rebuild ?

I'd choose Atlanta- they do have some young talent, and things can (mostly) only get better.

Regardless, he couldn't really have stayed with Toronto, taken a demotion (in practice), and watched a big name mediocrity come in to make more money and have more power.

My assumption here is that this is a vaguely positive sign that they're not going to level the prospect pipeline due to EverybodysdoingitGate. I also read this move to indicate that while John Hart is not being fired, he will not be retained at the end of his contract in 2018. This will be Anthopoulos' team going forward.

Atlanta is the better choice because he has decision-making power there that he wouldn't have had under Shapiro.

I love AA for what he did in Toronto, but he DEFINITELY did the right thing (for his career) by leaving Toronto when Shapiro arrived.
He lost his prime supporter on the board (Paul Beeston, who gave him the go ahead to "push all in" for 2015 as it was his last year as well) and he was essentially going to be demoted under Shapiro.

I wish him all the best in Atlanta. He's the master of the "holy crap I didn't see THAT trade coming!" maneuver (all the big ones weren't leaked until minutes before they were announced), so it should be exciting for Braves fans.

The Canadian language has 158 words for getting punched by Rougned Odor but no word for the baseball postseason.

As a Blue Jays fan, the Shapiro hire made me unhappy. Felt it was a clear downgrade in Gm talent.

As a Phillies fan, the Anthopoulos hire makes me unhappy. This hire is a good one for the Braves, which is bad for the rest of NL East.

It's also another strong signal that John Schuerholz' influence outside of the most senior level adminstrative decisions - mostly regarding real estate investment and managing the team's relationships with the older power brokers in MLB itself - is on the wane. This is not Dayton Moore.

Too bad Dickey declined the option. AA could have traded him back to NY for Syndergaard.

Pretty sure the Braves "untouchables" list just shrunk to "Ronald Acuna."

Anthopolous got a raw deal in Toronto, and if my team were in the market for a GM he'd be one of the first guys on my list. In fact, when he signed with the Dodgers I remember wishing heartily that the M's had spent a little more time on their GM search so they could have hired him when he came available. If you're looking for a young stathead gunslinger who won't cost you what Theo or Friedman will cost you, Antho is probably your guy. I hope he does well in Atlanta.

Concur with the majority, it's a good hiring by Atlanta. AA made a good move to LA, was already a pretty clever guy and I'm sure picked up a bit more knowledge under Friedman and Co.
Atlanta seems to be making the right moves for now.

I think this is a good hire for Atlanta. While I think Anthopoulos' work as Toronto's GM is overrated (his tenure tends to be a polarizing issue among Blue Jays fans), he certainly wasn't a bad GM, and he was probably the best available candidate among ex-GMs. I wish him well.
