Alex Cora, Andrew Benintendi ejected: ‘I’ve got to go out and defend my player,’ Cora says - masslive.com

Of course, Benintendi isn’t wrong.

Andrew Benintendi’s simple message for home-plate umpire Angel Hernandez led to Benintendi getting ejected for the first time in his career.

“I grounded out and was frustrated and all I said was, ‘You suck,’” Benintendi said.

Benintendi, who disagreed with a called strike earlier in his fifth-inning at-bat against Rangers starter Ariel Jurado, yelled as he walked toward the dugout. First-base umpire Vic Carapazza immediately threw him out.

The Red Sox appear to be going nowhere at the moment, but most New Englanders don't really care right now, because:
-The Bruins are a win away from the Stanley Cup
- The Patriots keep winning the Super Bowl
- The Celtics were disappointing, but are always interesting
- The Red Sox just won the World Series, so whatever

FWIW, however, the Red Sox are only a game out of the 2nd wild card slot (which may say more about how the extra WC has watered down the regular season than anything else). Everybody in the starting lineup has an OPS+ of 105 or better except for Bradley, who has been hitting better lately, and is a wizard in the field. The starting pitching has been poor outside of Sale and Price, but the bullpen has been pretty good, overall.

The 2019 Red Sox seem like a team who whole is less than the sum of its parts, but it also feels like they could snap off a 10-game winning streak anytime.

That last sentence is my feeling too. This feels a lot like 2004 to me. An underperforming team that at some point is going to rip off 18 out of 21. I’m just not sure what’s going on right now though. They need to get their #### together soon.

And you wonder why you were ejected?

And you wonder why you were ejected?

That was my reaction. Maybe that phrase gets repeated as often as Benintendi said it does at the big league level, but that seems a pretty direct way of getting the point across, and it doesn't surprise me he got the boot for it.

In one of the Luciano books he shared some ump (Doug Harvey maybe?) saying the magic word was "you." Swear at the uniform all you want, ##### about the call, if you follow "you" with anything other than "are right" then you are attacking the man in the uniform and you are done.

The more interesting event from last night is it seems Woodward got tossed because he argued when Angel Hernandez wouldn't let him review a play because the 30 seconds had elapsed. As far as I'm concerned this is good news. You get 30 seconds to decide on a review then you're done. Move on.

On a general note I wonder if Angel Hernandez gets argued with more in part because people know the general perception of him and know they will be viewed with greater sympathy than someone arguing with a more well respected ump. I'm not saying Hernandez is a good ump (he's not) but I wouldn't be surprised if players and managers felt empowered to go at him in a way they wouldn't with other umps because of how he is perceived.

Not sure if it's true or not, but I've heard "you" is the magic word to get ejected.

Not clear from the article who he was saying "You suck" to....could be himself? his bat? JBJ?

According to “the box” displayed on the Red Sox broadcast the pitch Benintendi was complaining about was actually a strike that painted the outside corner. I think #5 has a point in that if another ump makes that same call nobody bats an eye over it. But since it was a close call and Angel Hernandez was behind the plate its assumed he must have missed it.

Kind of a tough environment for an umpire, but Angel Hernandez has earned it fair and square.

Close....but no cigar.
