Alex Cora has some words for a vocal critic of David Price | Boston.com

Why didn’t he just mention the Mad Dog?

“There was a lot of noise,” Cora said. “I was saying today — and I don’t want to pick battles with the media — but I heard somebody today on TV just blasting David, blasting him, calling him the worst pitcher in the postseason.”

...

The belief paid off Thursday.

“When he was throwing 94 miles per hour and the [changeups], I was thinking about that segment on MLB Network today,” Cora said. “I don’t know, probably the guy is going to blast me because I’m talking about him — whoever he is — but you know what? I’m happy David showed up today, and [Friday], we can turn the page and move on to the World Series with David Price.”

And as for the guy on MLB Network?

“He actually should apologize to him.”

He may not have meant Russo. There was some radio guy on Brian Kenny's show, (I think it was Kenny's show) who said "You think you can't predict baseball? I'll predict the Red Sox lose tonight", after he was going on about how bad Price was.

It was Evan Roberts from WFAN.

*non-Trumpkin division, of course

You'll have to apologize for that when an athlete has a non-thin-skinned day.

Well played, sir.

So one game in which Price doesn't suck disproves the claim?

Not if those who manage them and build the teams have anything to say about it...

Well, a lot of them were professional athletes as well. I was including Cora in that group.

What I really want to know is, what words did Cora actually use instead of [changeups] and [Friday], that required them to be replaced...

Yea, he's been bad overall, I don't know how anyone can really dispute that. Just out of curiousity, who has the best claim for "worst pitcher in the post-season" all-time with multiple outings?
   12. Nasty Nate Posted: October 19, 2018 at 12:42 PM (#5771166)
Maybe not Javier Vazquez (15 innings, 10.34 ERA), but god bless him anyway.

If your contrasting with regular season is has to be Don Newcombe

"David Price had been historically bad in the playoffs and this media person had the nerve to point it out!!"

If you're going so far as to guarantee a loss because he's going to stink, yes. Especially because Price went six and struck out nine despite being on 3 day's rest and having fully warmed up the night before, all in a matchup with one of the best pitchers in recent postseason history who only gave up 1 run through the first five innings. That was a fantastic start in those circumstances.
   16. Batman Posted: October 19, 2018 at 02:13 PM (#5771265)
Jay Witasick had a 15.58 ERA in 8.2 innings and 8 appearances. He had a 54.00 ERA (plus one unearned run) in his 1.2 World Series innings across three appearances.

If the claim is "David Price can't handle the post season pressure and doesn't have the "clutch" gene" - then yes.

If the claim is "David Price has been a poor post season pitcher over time" - then no.

Based on my understanding, a lot of "media" types were claiming the former. Which is silly.

The issue has always been the narrative. Price's post-season record is what it is, but we tend to treat all of our sporting events like character tests -- Reggie Jackson is a heroic warrior who does best when the team needs him most, and David Price is a gutless loser. We have killed many trees with these narratives, and they are nearly all bullshit.

I have seen Price speak eloquently about his frustrations in the post-season, but if your question is "why do you choke in big games?" he tends to get frustrated. Price has been a good or great pitcher for many years, and you could tell that Cora and his team were thrilled that Price finally had a game that lived up to his resume.

Are fans simply tone deaf? These players and coaches are scrutinized for everything they do and if they can turn the narrative, I’m all for it.

Everything is bad optics these days - kudos to Price for having a great outing and for Cora backing him.

If someone’s feelings are hurt here, I don’t think it’s Price and Cora with the thin skin.

I wasn't making a claim about Price's post-season performance. I'm not a fan of judging players on small samples, but apparently Cora is. I was just being snarky. I know that's rare around these parts.

price and kershaw should get three matchups because it is likely one of them can then shed the reputation forever
