Alfonso Soriano says Marlins Park dimensions ‘too big’

Small!: Reverend Gadgite.

When Hanley Ramirez hit his game-winning three-run homer in the eighth inning Tuesday, it set off the multi-colored $2.5 million home-run sculpture in left-center field. Cubs manager Dale Sveum didn’t see the leaping fish or the flamingos at all.

“I didn’t even look at it, to tell you the truth,” Sveum said Wednesday. “I saw the ball leave the bat and said, ‘Oh God.’”

Alfonso Soriano said he anticipates the Marlins may have to move the fences in at the new ballpark after the first year.

“In baseball, you don’t see ballparks this big anymore,” Soriano said. “This is too big. I don’t care—we only play three games here. Those guys in the [National League] East, they’ll be talking about it. We don’t see ballparks with 418 [feet] to center field, 390 to the right-center gap.”

What did Soriano think about the sculpture?

“That’s Miami,” he said, smiling.

Of course, none of these players saw Forbes Field.

I came in here ready to pounce on Soriano, but even I'm not petty enough to make fun of him for those comments. Harmless. Much like his bat. There it is!

and to think County Stadium was viewed as a pitcher/hitter neutral park with 392 to the alleys/402 to center.

Mets FO agrees, moves fences in at Marlins Park. Also decides pyramids too high, sends people to start moving stones.

Soriano negotiated a clause in his contract that pays $75,000 for a Gold Glove. Alfonso should use the big outfield to showcase his sparkling defensive skills. Of course he would have a dozen homers by now if he played in...uh, well there's...uh, okay I'm sure he hit one in spring training-send him back to Mesa.

Interestingly, Soriano got his big contract after a 46-homer season playing in RFK, which was just as deep to the gaps as this one appears to be. He didn't have any problem hitting it 390 over the wall then.

David DeJesus crushed a ball yesterday in the first inning to left-center that would have been a homer in most parks but didn't even reach the warning track in Miami.
