The stars will be out tonight, amirite?

THIS TIME IT COUNTS!!!

If it's tied after 9 innings, I think they should have Vlad Jr. and Joc Peterson come back out and hit HRs for 4 minutes again.

This guitarists-playing-behind-the-mound-during-the-intros thing will only become tolerable if they remain out there during the game itself.

edit: I say that partly out of curmudgeonliness, and partly because I can barely hear whatever famous riffs they're playing over Joe Buck and the rest of the noise. (2nd edit: oh and partly because Fox keeps cutting to them or split-screening them every few seconds.)

The all star game is stupid. And I'm going to watch it anyway. Like I always do.

Keep booing the Cubs, Indians fans. Don't change a thing.

Who's the oldest player in the NL lineup? Is it Freddie Freeman?
   9. Ziggy is done with Dominican discotheques Posted: July 09, 2019 at 08:19 PM (#5860478)
oh no, on field interviews. it's like they're actively looking for ways to make baseball worse.
   10. Yonder Alonso in misguided trousers (cardinal) Posted: July 09, 2019 at 08:21 PM (#5860479)
I didn't realize that this thing with the announceers and Freeman was a conversation, not just listening in. That's... an idea, certainly.
   11. the Centaur Nipple Paradox (CoB). Posted: July 09, 2019 at 08:21 PM (#5860480)
That Freeman at bat was fun.
   12. phredbird Posted: July 09, 2019 at 08:24 PM (#5860481)

i thought i was going to hate the mic on the batter, but these guys are having fun and freeman is an affable young man, so i'm not going to yell for him to get off my lawn ...

is bunting against the rules in the all star game?

I didn’t see this on-field guitarist thing referenced in #5, but...did they do you-know-what for Santana?

but these guys are having fun

Seriously, fun is good.

If I have to see this State Farm “she-shed” ad one more time I’m going to find a she-shed, whatever the #### that is, and burn it down. They’ve been running that thing constantly for two years.
   19. the Centaur Nipple Paradox (CoB). Posted: July 09, 2019 at 08:36 PM (#5860489)
I'm afraid to tell you that you won't be able to, because I'll have burned it down before you and salted the earth around it ...

I'm not super interested in hearing John Smoltz pontificate on the juiced ball during the All-star game.

state farm's entries in the silly ad campaigns by insurance companies are lousy, except for the 'don't mess with my discount' lady. that one is a riot because that actress nails it.

i know it's super stupid, but the Liberty Mutual Li MU Emu ads make me chuckle. All their other ones suck.

Geico still manages to stay in front of those guys.

SO they have go-pros and headpieces on ? Very nice.
   28. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: July 09, 2019 at 08:47 PM (#5860499)
They should talk more about why they are playing where and stuff. Nobody cares about since when they have been friends.
   29. Tom Nawrocki Posted: July 09, 2019 at 08:47 PM (#5860500)

They were interviewing the Astros outfielders when I noticed only two of them has a #45 memorial patch on their uniform. After the next play I saw only Brantley had it. So the patch is... a sticker? It's not sewn on??
   37. villageidiom Posted: July 09, 2019 at 09:02 PM (#5860511)
They must have noticed it was gone, because Springer has #45 on again.

agreed. and it's cool that they still use that actor. he's had a tough real life.

also wanted to add that Progressive was giving Geico a run for its money for a while, but they've been a little hit or miss lately.

   69. Yonder Alonso in misguided trousers (cardinal) Posted: July 09, 2019 at 10:03 PM (#5860555)
Santana's shin guard appears to be gold also, so maybe it's an All-Star Game special issue.
   70. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: July 09, 2019 at 10:03 PM (#5860556)
Does anyone else think the "1969 flashback" theme of the broadcast is maybe not the best way to draw in younger fans?
   71. Yonder Alonso in misguided trousers (cardinal) Posted: July 09, 2019 at 10:05 PM (#5860557)
Also, watching Santana nearly step right on Alonso's hand was not fun at all. Luckily Alonso had the presence of mind to pull his hand away from the line.

@72 Ha. I'd change it to 'Pete' but 'Yonder' fits the line better ('Yonder' is also in the original lyric, though maybe obviously it's used there in a directional sense.) Maybe if he goes back to 'Peter'.

Huh. I had no idea that was a lyric reference.

As usual, great power pitching dominates all-or-nothing power hitting and makes for a boring game, but on the brighter side we're in the bottom of the 7th and we haven't yet reached the 2 hour mark.

When I read that comment, I thought back to the 1969 A-S game (which I remember) and imagined they were flashing back to the year of the Black Sox. IOW I get your point.

I was initially thinking the same thing, but here are the past several years' ASG results:

2018: AL 8, NL 6
2017: AL 2, NL 1
2016: AL 4, NL 2
2015: AL 6, NL 3
2014: AL 5, NL 3
2013: AL 3, NL 0
2012: NL 8, AL 0

Wherever you draw the line at when the current aesthetic era started, I'm not sure you can draw an "as usual" conclusion one way or the other from those results.

(Except of course that as usual, the AL is leading.)
   83. Yonder Alonso in misguided trousers (cardinal) Posted: July 09, 2019 at 10:19 PM (#5860571)
@79 It's from a song called "We Built This Village On A Trad Arr Tune" by British pop band Half Man Half Biscuit. 'Yonder the deacon in misguided trousers' is the original. They're pretty well obscure here in the US (I'd only heard of them through a British friend) but I think kind of beloved in a cultish way in the UK? They've been around for like 30 years. John Peel loved 'em.

It's also one of the like 5% of pop culture references the band makes that I get. But there're a couple of youtube links to live versions here if you're so inclined.

Are there any recognizable guitar licks from the 00s and 10s?**

Also, while it depresses me ... and it's a small sample these days, the white guy sports fan types in the 20s and 30s that I meet still seem to be more likely fans of classic rock than anything else. Maybe that's just a Aus/NZ being 20+ years behind culturally thing though.

** Not by me but I don't count since I threw most "recognizable" music (other than that of my youth of course) off the lawn decades ago.

Seven Nation Army is, of course, a terrible cliche at this point.

The story behind it becoming that is interesting ...
