HOW WILL THE ANGELS LOSE TODAY?!

Painfully, seems like the best bet. I don't know what El Hombre may have done to so greatly offend The Baseball Gods, but he should probably sacrifice a goat or something.

How is a home run under review at wrigley?

And over turned. How weird.

Mets bulk up for wild-card run by reactivating Bruce, adding a 3rd C in Nido while demoting Dom Smith and Wisenheimer - er, Reinheimer

I have a good feeling about this!

4 pitch unintentional walk to Javy. They're scared of him! Then he tags up on a fly to RF, love that Javy.

So rumors are the Brewers were the team to claim Harvey, but the Reds are keeping him. Saying they like him, something something bullshit. Wasn't the whole idea of trading for him so they could maybe flip him for something? Bad teams gonna bad.
   11. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: August 24, 2018 at 03:22 PM (#5733198)
Oh, I probably should mention how great Mills looks today - 4IP, 7Ks 0BBs, and only 1 run.

Javy got greedy.

Yes, it started out as a bet, but then they really fell in love with him!

How to not lose Matt Harvey in 10 days?
   14. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: August 24, 2018 at 03:33 PM (#5733207)
Cubs are making Harvey look pretty good, which I don't know if that makes the Reds seem dumb or smart. Either way, it's good for us that he's not on the Brewers if he's going to be yet another Scherzer against the Cubs.

I bet that for Players' Weekend the clubs have to put in orders for extra y's, e's and r's to sew on the jersey backs.

Had Happ gone with Happery or even Happyer he could've turned that whole nicknaming convention on its head!

Schwarbs definitely should have caught that.

Eh, I don't like the quick hook, and especially not for Rosario.

lowercase javy time.

Not a great AB, Tony.

Based on a review - with absolutely no clear angle on the Cubs broadcast - a horrible AB.

Swung at a clear ball 4, fouling it off, then grounding into inning ending 1-2-3 DP. Blugh

Mets want to see Jay Bruce at 1B “quite a lot,” per MC, to figure out if he’s a full-time 1B next season, a full-time RF, or combo of both. Bruce said hip is as good as it’ll get for now & plantar fasciitis is much better. Would like Spring Training at 1B if he’s there full time.
   23. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: August 24, 2018 at 04:22 PM (#5733256)
I appreciate what is really a good eye at the plate from Happ, but he's not going to get the benefit of the doubt on those close pitches most of the time, fair or not. He has to be more defensive in those 2 strike counts on the really close ones.
   24. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: August 24, 2018 at 04:28 PM (#5733261)

   25. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: August 24, 2018 at 04:44 PM (#5733268)
You absolutely should not be able to bring in a new pitcher like this - before a pitch thrown in the inning and the P already warmed up. If that means the hitting team has to declare a PH before warmups start, so be it. This is ridiculous, and I'm not even on team Elroy with these pitching changes.

This is indeed the very lowest-hanging of the low-hanging fruit. It's shameful that this is even still an issue.

Yeah. There's no justification to hanging on to Harvey, unless they really think they have a shot of re-signing him. Since it's Boras, that seems very unlikely.

Bote has 5 HR this year. All of them have either tied the game or given the Cubs the lead. Average WPA on Bote's homers is +.424, which means that this tenth-inning walkoff homer actually lowered the average slightly.

Day-umn....

Had to go into the office today because work is stupid, so listened to the 6th inning on on the ride home - and parked just as Bote hit the HR. I'm really starting to feel some magic with this team - and in particular, the unexpected (Bote) and the imports (Hamels and Murphy). Other than the three pitchers we wish all agree need a few years in a gulag -- I really love this team. Fun bunch.
   46. Zonk is Just the Right Amount of Wrought Posted: August 24, 2018 at 06:21 PM (#5733338)
Have all of Bote's HRs been with two strikes? I vaguely think I recall they were but might be wrong.

Have all of Bote's HRs been with two strikes? I vaguely think I recall they were but might be wrong.

His first was on the first pitch.

Also, two of the five (the two lowest in WPA, because they were both early-game homers) have come against Francisco Liriano.

Cora makes the pitching change 4 batters too late. I guess 50 games over .500 means not having to give a ####.

CC to me, is like those Niekro brothers in the 80s. I hope he doesn't get a comebacker to the head, which would end his career.
Hope he retires soon. It is kinda hard to watch him, without feeling sorry all the time.

my pal and I are going to the Mets-Giants game on Sunday - it's Lunchbag Day!

we were tempting to go for the 3rd-row upper deck seats behind home plate on Stubhub for 6 bucks, but we decided to take 16th row-from-field seats between home plate and third base for $39 instead.

gotta love combo of a bad team and a baseball city that is not, well, the most loyal shall we say (also would apply to the Yankees if they ever suck again, they haven't had a losing season since 1992, when their only good SP was Melido Perez, Pascual's brother).

I was tempted to go for dugout seats for $75 - not front row, I mean you sit next to manager Mickey Calloway.
:)

Bruce feels like a guy to me that would have a second career if he moves to first base. I don't really follow him that well, but he seems like one of those guys who needs a less stressful defensive position for health reasons, and that the lack of mobility required for the position will allow him to added more mass(both muscle and fat, which will allow him to up his offensive game, while probably not really changing his defensive value)

O'Neil with a homerun to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead, he's at 5 hr's for the season, and I'm pretty confident he is going to finish the season in double digits. And heck might even surpass 15 while playing part time.

This game for Mikolas has fallen apart. 7-0 lead has become a 7-5 lead.... Shildt trying his damndest to get Mikolas through five innings and unable to do that... Mikolas has allowed a season high of five runs today.... all five runs came in the fifth inning.
   80. cardsfanboy Posted: August 24, 2018 at 10:49 PM (#5733448)
According to rumors, the Reds had waived Harvey and Hamilton, and both were claimed... and I'm thinking "no ####\" especially in regards to Hamilton. If you are a potential playoff team, and have the ability to add Hamilton to the roster August 24th and you don't make a claim for him, then you probably should be fired right then and there. Yes he's not a quality major league starter, but with expanded rosters coming up in a week, and the post season where the bullpens are generally reduced, a specialist like him has a tremendous amount of appeal.

The rumor said an "unknown team" claimed him, and I'm thinking it's more like 12 teams claimed him, the earliest team to make a claim on him was probably the Nationals, if not them, then the Dodgers had to be the first team to make the claim... if he made it to the Phillies, then there are some pretty piss poor gm's out there(note: I haven't really looked at the Dodgers to see if they had the room to make a claim, a small part of me says that they didn't have any ability to make it.... but the Phillies should be the worst team in the NL to "have" to make a claim for him. )

About the only useful tidbit this idiot tv crew has brought to tonights broadcast, was to mention why the Cardinals are so popular in Colorado... the rest of the broadcast has been them Stormy Daniels Mike Shildt.
   86. cardsfanboy Posted: August 24, 2018 at 11:39 PM (#5733479)
I mean.... again, Jim Edmonds is one of my favorite players of all time, but his memory of how he played the game is utter bs.... he talks about how he put the ball in play in comparison to today's players who strike out... and he constantly makes that point, and of course that is a bs point.... the point he should be making is "that when I was up to bat, I knew strikeouts are going to happen, and the difference between a weak groundout to short and a strikeout made me decide to try and swing hard as #### at every pitch....because those two results were going to happen no matter what, so why change what got me to the majors.".... That is the way he played, and his argument about revisionistic history is bs, he didn't start shortening up his swing until he was no longer a plus bat and had to find ways to provide value even when not hitting the ball well.

This is the thing "smart baseball" is something that lesser players need to do to stay in the majors, it's not something you want from your starters except maybe 30 or so plate appearances in a season.

That was a ####### dumbass play by Gyorko, it worked, but ytf would you make that throw on a sharply hit ball.... you go to first where the throw gets the runner by 5 steps.

Both the Brewers and Pirates have a good portion of yellow in these special uniforms and caps/helmets, but that makes it rather difficult to tell the teams apart on the field since it's the bright color that attracts the eye.

In case you didn't know, they're still playing baseball in MKE. Cervelli hit a dying quail to medium RF which Yelich couldn't quite get to charging in and Schoop bobbled in his haste to bare-hand it, so 2 runs score to break the tie. 6-4 Pirates in the top of the 15th inning.

It's amazing how teams can score runs in the regular 9 innings, but when it gets to extras with bullpen relievers on nobody can seem to get so much as a baserunner. Why don't they always play like it's extra innings during the first 9 innings??

Was at Coors tonight, loved it when Matt Holliday batted --- and got a standing O from both sets of fans.

And the Brewers came back to win! After a couple of walks, Ryan Braun struck out for the second out. Then another walk... to the relief pitcher! Then ground ball singles by Kratz (the backup catcher) and Arcia (the .215 hitting shortstop) for the win.

You’ve not heard about Players Weekend?

I guess I've heard vague references to it. What is it and what does it have to do with the horrible uniforms?

I like the Cardinals player uniform, it's not something I want to see everyday, but as an alternate it's not hideous, and has kinda a cool factor.

I hate them all on principle -- just another stupid "alt uniform" money grab -- but the Cards should reverse the colors and wear blue with red sleeves rather than red with blue. The red fronts obscure both the "Cardinals" lettering and those beautiful birds. From the upper deck where I was last night all you could see was the yellow bat across the front.
