Altman: Red Sox Nation, Phanatics Share The Obnoxious Gene

Altman: That cold day in the park…followed by another and another and…

Goodbye, obnoxious Red Sox fans.

Hello, obnoxious Phillies fans.

Twin brats of different dysfunctional mothers, the fanatics of Boston and Philadelphia come to the same place of extreme obnoxiousity from opposite roads.

This much I know from having lived in both places and having rooted against both home teams.

Believe me, as a Mets fan. I know obnoxious.

So the Red Sox and Phillies have obnoxious fans. Can anybody explain to me how this is different from any other team?

For example, the Cardinals have me.

It isn't, though that won't stop the usual suspects from trying.

disclaimer...I didn't click on the link or read the entire article....

However, if you are living in a city and rooting against the home team...uh doesn't that make YOU the obnoxious fan?

Yep, thought so.

Ironclad proof, finally, that all non New England Red Sox fans are obnoxious.

Team loyalties are formed before adulthood. I root for the A's even though I can see Fenway from my apartment. The Red Sox are an active rival and I've disliked them since they beat the A's in the '03 playoffs. If that makes me obnoxious, well, I'm very sorry.

Mets fans calling other people's fanbases obnoxious? Well, I never.

Our fanbase's shenanigans are cheeky and fun. Yours are the devil's hot pus.

The perfect team would be a team with no fans at all. Then nobody would be offended if, heaven forfend, they won something. There would be no taunting or ribbing of any kind, and it would be glorious.

So the Mets, Phillies, Cardinals, Yankees, Red Sox, and Cubs have "obnoxious" fans. Isn't that the same thing as "lots of" fans?

I'm so nostalgic for the Expos I could nearly weep.

Unfortunately, yes.

Nothing is more obnoxious than those stupid cowbells they used in Tampa.

You can be a brother from a different mother, and you can be a brother from another planet, but is it really possible to twins from different mothers?

the Rays couldn't get 12,000 people in the building on a Saturday night, and now when they do show up, they need the Jumbotron to tell them when to shake their idiot cowbells? Give me a break. The Rays may very well win the World Series, but they will do it while having 3/4 of the Trop occupied by people who never gave a damn until last week.

That's from the comments accompanying the article. If true, that sounds pretty obnoxious to me.

When all is said and done, the adjectives 'bandwagon' and 'obnoxious' are in the same thesaurus entry.

I give you the Texas Rangers.

expansion teams traditionally don't get good attendence consistently until after they win something. Rays did 1.8 mil in attendence this year. Royals didn't break that mark until the year of their second division title, Angels in the year they got their first division title, Cubs took 100 years before they broke the 1.8mil mark, 90 years for the Reds, etc. Fans don't become expert fans overnight, and even today, the older teams attendence is very much dependent on either city size or their won loss record.

Instead of blasting the fans for trying to appreciate the game, why not applaud them for getting into the game. I mean I think there are tons of idiot fans in New York, Boston, Philly, Chicago, and the west coast, that need to be taught how to be a fan of the sport instead of homers with limited knowledge of the game outside of their home town. And other people will take offense with Cardinal, Astros and Reds fans that applaud a good performance from the opposition. Every team has fans that could be considered annoying (some like Boston, moreso than others) and every fanbase has a stereotype that is somewhat true but not true for a good majority of their fans.
