Amazin’ Avenue: This Week In SNY—featuring Ron Darling’s rant

I knew Tango & MGL had problems with Potomac Books…but this is ridiculous!

nn

Ron: Let me ask you a question. Why do these organizations—why do they want to pigeon-hole themselves? Why don’t they just keep their big mouths shut? There’s no reason to tell anybody that [Stephen Strasburg] is on any innings. They don’t owe anyone that. Just shut your mouth and let him pitch…

...Nothing better for baseball than taking a great young pitcher and not letting him be great. We should try that the rest of the way, see how it goes in 2025. C’mon he’s 6’4”, 240lbs…

...There’s no artificial way to keep a guy healthy. They did everything you’re supposed to do in the minor leagues and what happened? He had Tommy John Surgery in his first year! I mean, please. I’m so sick of the people who never played in the suits—or they’ve got the white smocks on—saying ‘I know how to legislate when a guy is going to get hurt. And I give him these innings or that innings and he’s definitely not gonna get hurt.’ They did everything you’re supposed to do. They did it all by the book, and in his first year he gets a Tommy John. Way to go. Fantastic. Great job. Did everything by the book. There’s no book! There is no book! I’m so sick of hearing it!

I wonder if he knows that he just explained why some organizations prefer having a young pitcher on the own minor league teams rather than trying to pitch their college team into the World series.

Exactly the same position that Darling took when asked to comment on the reading at Yale.

I feel bad for anyone who doesn't get to listen to Darling every game. I just hope he's still calling games for the Mets when they get good again-- suspect he's on his way to bigger and better things. He and Keith are a fun duo to listen to, especially given their wildly differing worldviews and pedigrees (during their playing days, Keith was sort of a primadonna and party animal, while Darling was a good but never great player who seemed to get by on smarts and hard work; even now, Keith gets star treatment in the booth in spite of the fact that Darling's analysis is light years ahead).

#5, yeah, he is. I completely agree with him, especially about teams feeling the need to broadcast their plans to everyone.

Also, I want Dylan Bundy up NOW.

It's amazing how much he's improved since his first year in the business, when he was doing color for the Nats.

I hope he gets to Bowie soon.

As noted previously, Darling clicks with Gary and Keith but seems to regress during the TBS telecasts.

I think Darling does pretty well on TBS. I guess the bar is set pretty low for national broadcasters though.

It helps that Gary is a huge fanboy and loves to heap praise on Ron and Keith. Though I don't agree with a lot of Gary's opinions on the game, as someone who grew up without cable listening to Gary on the radio, I have really appreciated seeing him get moved up the ladder over the past couple of decades.

The really funny part about this is that my copy of The Book came in the mail today. So yes, Darling, there IS a book and now I have it.

This is so true it is hard to believe it was even the same guy.

I seem to recall him taking a real secondary role to the other pitcher they had in the booth who refused to shut the hell up... seemingly out of respect as I remember him being a HOFer.... Smoltz?

I just sat there stunned while Darling went on. I basically agree with him, but I had never heard him so passionate on an issue.

Agree with this 100%. Darling is brilliant right now. It is true he isn't so special during TBS games. My thinking is similar, in that you have Smoltz, who clear was a better player and knows it, and Darling, who clearly is a better analyst, and knows it, which somehow causes Darling to become passive in that TBS booth. Part of it is Smoltz does yak a lot and seems to have a chip on his shoulder and is unable to relax and let the game come to him. It's not a good pairing.
